Who's Opening & Where Famous Dave’s of America (952-294-1300) will open 20 franchised restaurants in NH portions of MA NY NJ and CT through its franchisee Northwoods Ventures. The Bon Marche (206-506-6000) will open a 110 000 sq.ft. store at Redmond Town Center in Redmond WA. The department store is scheduled to open Fall 2003 and will be located adjacent to REI Sports. Hancock Fabrics (662-842-2834) will open 15 stores by the end of the year. The craft-supply retailer operates 436 stores in 42 states. Apple Computers (408-996-1010) plans to open 25 retail stores by the end of the year. The expansion began earlier this year with new stores in McLean VA and Glendale CA. Most recently the company opened locations at the Mall of America in Bloomington MN and in Dallas TX. Briazz (206-467-0994) plans to open 14 locations by the end of the fiscal year and an additional 20 units by the end of fiscal 2002. The company currently operates 40 cafes in the Chicago IL; Los Angeles CA; San Francisco CA and Seattle WA markets. Borders (734-477-1100) will open a 20 155 sq.ft. store at the Stonecrest Mall in Lithonia GA. The retailer will also open a 17 030 sq.ft. store at the Plaza Escorial in Carolina PR. The company operates more than 1 200 retail stores including about 350 Borders superstores about 870 mall-based Waldenbooks stores and more than 30 UK-based Books etc. shops. Hooters (770-951-2040) will build a 5 821 sq.ft. restaurant in Arlington VA. The new site is the second Hooters in the Arlington VA area. The company owns and franchises more than 280 locations worldwide. Target Stores (612-370-6948) will open a location at the Lakewood Center Mall in Lakewood CA. The 160 000 sq.ft. store will replace the Montgomery Ward store that stood in its place. The discount retailer currently operates more than 975 stores. U.S. Factory Outlets (212-563-3650) will anchor the Karcher Mall in Nampa ID. The company operates stores in 16 states. H&M (212-489-8777) will open a store at The Macerich Company’s Queens Center in New York City. The store will occupy 20 000 sq.ft. of space at the mall anchored by Macy’s and JCPenney. Wal*Mart Stores Inc. (501-273-4000) plans to open about 50 discount stores and 180 to 185 Supercenters in fiscal 2002. Relocations or expansions of existing discount stores will account for about 110 to 115 of the Supercenters and the remainder will be built in new locations. The company plans to accelerate the timing of Supercenter openings by delivering more units into the system during the first half of the next fiscal year versus the year ending January 31 2002. Wal*Mart Stores Inc. also will expand its Neighborhood Market concept by adding about 15 to 20 units in fiscal 2002. The Sam’s Club division will open 50 to 55 domestic clubs in fiscal 2002 of which about half will be relocations or expansions of existing clubs. The company’s expansion plan represents 46 million sq.ft. the largest increase in Wal*Mart history. In addition a Wal*Mart Supercenter received approval in Deland FL to be developed on a 40-acre parcel on US Highway 17. Wal*Mart Stores Inc. operates 1 651 Wal*Mart stores 1 026 Supercenters 486 Sam’s Clubs and 26 Neighborhood Markets in the United States.Nordstrom (206-303-4401) expects to open a 120 393 sq.ft. department store at University Mall in Orem UT during March 2002. The department store will include an in-house cafe and coffee bar. Nordstrom operates 128 stores in 25 states. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (336-725-2981) plans to open two units in MN next year. The first store will be located in Maple Grove MN and is expected to open in the Spring 2002. The second store will be at the Mall of America in Bloomington MN and is expected to open in Summer 2002. The company has plans to open eight more units in MN during the next five years. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts operates 194 locations in 31 states. Saks Incorporated (301-652-2250) plans to open an 80 000 sq.ft. Saks Fifth Avenue store at Stony Point Fashion Park a 680 000 sq.ft. open-air fashion center being developed in Richmond VA. The store which will be the company’s second store in VA is scheduled to open with the center in Fall 2003. Saks Incorporated operates Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises which consists of 62 Saks Fifth Avenue stores 50 Saks Off 5th stores and Saks Direct. Spartan Stores Inc. (616-530-4521) plans to open a 50 000 sq.ft. store in the greater Grand Rapids area of MI. The store is scheduled to open in Fall 2002. Spartan Stores Inc. operates 102 supermarkets and 25 deep-discount drug stores in MI and OH including Ashcraft’s Markets Family Fare Supermarkets Food Town Glen’s Markets Great Day Food Centers Prevo’s Family Markets and The Pharm. 99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) expects to open 25 stores and grow at 20% per year. 99 Cents Only Stores operates 118 units in southern and central CA Las Vegas NV and Phoenix AZ and a wholesale division called Bargain Wholesale. Linens ‘n Things Inc. (973-778-1300) plans to open 50 to 55 stores in 2002. In the third quarter of 2001 the retailer opened 25 new stores and plans to open 15 in the fourth-quarter 2001. The company operates 329 stores in the United States and Canada. Galyan’s Trading Company Inc. (317-532-0200) plans to open seven stores next year. The sporting goods chain operates 23 stores in 12 states. Ikea (610-834-0180) may open a store in College Park MD. The furniture retailer acquired 45 acres in College Park at the intersection of Beltway and US 1. Ikea operates 139 stores in 22 countries. Buca Inc. (612-288-2382) has long-term plans to open about 400 Buca di Beppo restaurants in the United States. The company operates 68 southern Italian restaurants in AZ CA CO FL IL IN IO KS KY MD MI MN NB NV NY OH PA TX UT WA WI and Washington DC. Home Depot (770-433-8211) expects to open a 97 000 sq.ft. store in Tullytown PA at the Levittown Shopping Center. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2002 and the store is slated to open in Fall 2002. The home improvement retailer operates 1 000 stores worldwide. Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc. (201-558-2400) expects to open 120 units in fiscal 2001 bringing its total to 520 units and past the halfway mark of the children’s apparel retailer’s goal of operating 1 000 locations by the end of 2005. Ultimate Franchise Systems Inc.’s (407-682-6363) weight loss and nutrition franchise Weight Loss Forever International Inc. plans to open 10 stores. The company also plans to expand in its key markets of VA and NC. Weight Loss Forever International Inc. which was recently acquired by Sobik’s International Franchising Inc. a division of Ultimate Franchise Systems Inc. operates 22 units. La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery (734-242-1444) plans to open a 17 000 sq.ft. furniture store in Fairfax VA next month. La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery operates more than 300 units. |
