Who's Opening & Where Lowe’s Companies Inc. (336-658-4000) will open a 150 000 sq.ft. store on the site of the former Montgomery Ward unit located on North Oracle Road in Tucson AZ. The company recently opened a store in Pinellas Park FL. The retailer expects to open 35 to 38 Lowe’s Home Improvement Wharehouses during the third quarter of fiscal 2001. The home improvement retailer opened 21 stores and relocated two units during the second quarter. Plans call for a total of 115 units opened in 2001. The company operates 700 stores in 40 states nationwide. Famous Dave’s of America (952-294-1300) signed an agreement for 20 new restaurants with Northwood Ventures LLC (212-517-5655). The units will be located in the northeastern states including: NH and MA (including Boston); Fairfield County CT; Nassau Suffolk and Westchester counties of NY and northern NJ. Mercedes Restaurants Inc. has extended its agreement with Famous Dave’s to include three units to open in IN. Famous Dave’s operates 35 company-owned units and operates 13 franchised locations nationwide. The company has agreements with franchisees to open 59 units nationwide. The chain specializing in closeouts and other items at discount operates 28 locations in 15 states.ACE Cash Express Inc. The unit is the chain’s third in the Chicagoland area and the company operates 170 units in 24 states. (305-593-0770) will open a Haru sushi restaurant and four Benihana teppanyaki restaurants over the remainder of fiscal 2002. The Asian-style restaurant chain opened two Haru locations in Manhattan and a teppanyaki Benihana unit in Wheeling IL during the first quarter of fiscal 2002. The apparel retailer opened 40 stores in the first six months of the year with eight relocations. The company operates 895 stores in 23 states for its Cato and It’s Fashion concepts. Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) will open two Chicagoland locations in St. Charles and Bollingbrook IL. The company operates 177 locations nationwide. Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. (410-239-2700) will open 11 stores in the second half of 2001. The men’s apparel retailer opened seven stores in the second quarter. The company operates 126 locations nationwide. Seaboard Franchise Services Company (713-622-9500) is franchising Crescent City Beignets with plans to open 19 restaurants in the Chicagoland area and 12 cafes in NV over the coming five years. The company is open in Lincoln Park IL and expects to open at Union Station and on Michigan Avenue soon. Fred’s Inc. (901-365-8880) plans to open 35 to 40 stores in 2001 of which 25 units opened in the first six months. The general merchandise retailer operates 373 locations nationwide. Roadhouse Grill Inc. (954-957-2600) plans to open four locations in fiscal 2002. The company opened 30 units in the previous 24 months. The company operates 90 Roadhouse Grill restaurants in AL AR FL GA LA MS NY NC OH SC and TN. The company has signed a franchise agreement with Cremonini s.p.a. to open 60 units throughout Europe by 2004. Aaron Rents Inc. The unit will be located on Lassiter Road and is expected to open in February 2002. The 3 000 sq.ft. unit will be the first freestanding unit for the cobranded concept in the Metroplex. Target (612-304-6073) will open a 125 000 sq.ft. store in Sherwood OR. The center will include a Wendy’s and is located on Southwest Tualatin-Sherwood Road near Route 99W. Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) plans to open 30 stores during the coming 12 months. The bookseller may open a store at the Pyramid Mall in Ithaca NY. The center has space available vacated by department store chains Montgomery Ward and JC Penney. The bookseller will open a 23 000 sq.ft. store in Elizabethtown KY. The unit will be located on US 32 (Dixie Highway) and is scheduled to open in June 2002. The company operates 357 stores nationwide.
