Closings Ames Department Stores (860-257-5379) will close its location at Union Plaza in New Castle PA. The company is closing 47 of its 452 stores and has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Lord & Taylor (314-342-6300) closed its store at Palm Beach Mall in Palm Beach FL. The company is opening a new location at the Mall at Wellington Green located at the intersection of Forest Hill Boulevard and State Road 7 in Wellington FL. The Palm Beach Mall store was the 62-unit chain’s first in FL opening in 1980. Homeland Holding Inc. (405-879-6600) plans to close eight Homeland grocery stores in OK and TX. Four of the affected stores are in Oklahoma City OK two in Muskogee OK and one each in Lawton OK and Amarillo TX. The company will operate 78 stores in KS OK and TX after the closings. Regal Cinemas (865-922-1123) has begun asking creditors for permission to seek chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The 338-theater chain hopes to complete reorganization within 90 days of filing with the court. The plan submitted to bondholders includes aggregate payments of $75 million to bondholders. Quality Stores Inc. (231-799-4218) will close 35 stores during the third quarter of fiscal 2001. The affected stores are located mainly in NC SC and GA but units will also be closed in CA OK PA and IA. After the closures the farm-supply retailer will operate 311 stores nationwide. Rent-Way Stores (814-461-5895) will close as many as 30 more stores as the rent-to-own company attempts to upgrade its image. The company closed 39 stores this fiscal year. The company operates over 1 100 locations nationwide. Payless Cashways (816-347-6630) will liquidate its inventory and go out of business. The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June but was unable to turn things around. The building supply retailer had closed over 130 stores in the past year. The final 72 stores will be closed as well. Bill Knapp’s Restaurants (616-968-1121) closed 16 locations in MI and OH. The family-dining restaurant chain closed three units in the Cincinnati OH area as well as in Springfield OH and Moraine OH. The company will continue to operate 31 restaurants in MI and OH. National Record Mart Inc. (412-276-6200) has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company has debtor-in-possession financing in place to continue operations of its 125 stores while it undergoes reorganization. |
