The restaurant will be located adjacent to a Super 8 Motel. The company operates 138 units throughout the midwestern states. United Retail Group Inc. (201-909-2192) will continue to pursue a 5% to 10% annual growth strategy in its square footage. The apparel retailer specializing in plus-sized ready-to-wear fashions operates 537 AVENUE stores with 2.275 million sq.ft. of space. Del Taco (949-462-9300) signed a franchise agreement with Boss Enterprises to build six restaurants in OR. The new locations will be located in Salem Albany Woodburn and Corvallis. The 385-unit chain has prior agreements to open in Bend and Medford OR. The company has signed agreements for over 200 unit openings in the past two years.Lakeshore Athletic Club (312-986-9595) will open an 80 000 sq.ft. location across from FlatIron Crossing Mall in Broomfield CO. The company operates six facilities nationwide four in Chicago IL; one in IN and a spa in CA. Sharper Image Corporation (415-445-6226) opened a store at The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano TX. The specialty retailer plans 12 openings in 2001 after opening 14 stores in the previous 24 months. The company operates more than 100 stores nationwide.Comac Food Group Inc. (403-230-1151) signed an area development agreement with Canamex Investments Inc. to open 12 Domino’s Pizza locations in Montreal PQ Canada’s east and south shore markets. Comac operates 230 restaurants for the Domino’s Pizza Pastel’s Cafe and Company’s Coming Bakery Cafe throughout Canada. Toys R Us (201-599-7850) will retrofit 250 stores during fiscal 2001 and expects as many as 70 units at a time to be under construction. The company will also open a flagship store on Times Square in New York City next month. The company’s Babies R Us concept plans to add 20 stores this fiscal year six of which have already opened. Hirsch plans to open 10 stores this year in TX UT OK NC and TN. Virgin Entertainment Group (323-935-1500) opened a 25 000 sq.ft. megastore at Mockingbird Station in Dallas TX. The store is the second in the Metroplex. The company plans to have 35 stores operating by 2007. Wingstop Restaurants Inc. (972-698-7900) has signed a franchise agreement to open three restaurants in FL. The units will open in Tallahassee Gainesville and Orlando. The company operates 31 locations and has 50 units under development.Stein Mart (904-346-1500) plans to open 21 stores before the end of the year. New markets include St. Louis MO; MI and the Washington DC area. The junior department store chain opened nine units during the first two quarters. The restaurant chain opened three locations during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2001 and operates 28 units nationwide.Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to open 40 Wal*Mart stores and between 170 to 180 Supercenters in fiscal 2002. The retailer will relocate existing stores for up to 110 of the Supercenters with the balance being new locations. The company operates 3 500 Wal*Mart Wal*Mart Supercenters and Sam’s Club locations nationwide. Dillard’s (501-376-5200) will move its Gulf View Square location to the larger former Montgomery Ward’s space in the center in St. Petersburg FL. The center is rumored to have Best Buy ready to fill the Dillard’s space.Fired Up Inc. (512-263-0800) opened a Johnny Carino’s Country Italian restaurant in Amarillo TX. The unit is a franchised location for Sandia Food Group which plans four more openings this year. The company plans 25 Johnny Carino’s locations in NM NV and AZ during the coming five years. Fired Up Inc. operates 37 restaurants and has franchise agreements in place for the development of at least 200 units over the next seven years. Longs Drug Stores (925-210-6763) expects to open 11 to 13 stores by the end of fiscal 2002. The drugstore chain opened or acquired 11 locations in the first half of the fiscal year and operates 428 stores in CA CO HI NV OR and WA. Pasta Palazzo (773-248-1400) will open a tapas cafe called Twist on North Sheffield Avenue in Chicago IL. The company operates its Pasta Palazzo restaurant on North Halsted Street. Qdoba Restaurant Corporation (303-629-5000) will open 14 locations during the coming five months. The quick-serve Mexican food concept plans to open multiple units in Louisville KY and Lexington KY. The chain will also add locations in East Lansing MI; Matthews NC; Charlotte NC; Madison WI and Atlanta GA. The company operates 56 units nationwide and plans 19 additional units in KY and OH over the next five years.Brookstone Inc. (603-577-8104) anticipates opening 24 to 27 stores for the year. The company opened six stores including two airport locations in the second quarter. The specialty retailer operates 231 locations nationwide. Galyan’s Trading Company Inc. (317-532-0200) plans three store openings in the remainder of 2001. The specialty sporting goods retailer recently opened a store in Rochester NY. The company has also signed leases for four of its seven planned openings in fiscal 2002. Leases were signed in Arlington TX; Denver CO and two in the Chicago IL market. The 25-unit chain operates in 12 states. 24 Hour Fitness (925-251-4057) opened a 24 Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport Club at Hilltop Mall in Richmond CA. The unit is the first cobranding of 24 Hour Fitness Clubs and Magic Johnson. The clubs will locate in minority areas and feature Magic Johnson memorabilia. 24 Hour Fitness operates 286 clubs in 15 states. Frisch’s Restaurants Inc. (513-961-2660) plans to develop 29 Golden Corral restaurants in the Cincinnati Dayton Cleveland and Toledo OH markets as well as Louisville KY by 2007. The company operates 135 restaurants under the Frisch’s Big Boy and Golden Corral banners in KY IN and OH. Asprey & Garrard (212-289-8865) will split its jewelry and soft goods operations and expand its store counts in the US. Garrard will continue its line of fine jewelry that it began selling in 1722. Asprey will focus on leather goods silverware and will add clothing shoes and housewares lines. The companies plan to open 30 stores in the coming years and plans to target younger consumers. Hot Topic Inc. (626-839-4681) plans to open 15 Hot Topic stores by the end of 2001. The company has opened 55 units this year and had planned 65 locations. The company operates 328 Hot Topic stores and six Torrid locations.
