Who's Opening & Where


Ross Stores (510-505-4400) plans to open 22 Ross Dress for Less stores during the third quarter of fiscal 2001. The company opened 23 stores in the first two quarters and operates 431 stores nationwide.

Panera Bread Company (314-633-7100) raised its announced total openings for 2001. The company has opened 49 bakery-cafes year to date (nine of which were company-owned) and now plans 17 company-owned and 75 franchised locations for the calendar year. The company has set a goal of 100 openings for 2002 including 20 company-owned stores. The company operates 309 units for the St. Louis Bread Company and Panera Bread Company concepts.

Talbot’s Inc. (781-749-7600) expects to open 38 stores before the end of the year. The women’s apparel retailer opened 43 units in the first half of the year and operates 762 locations nationwide under the brands Talbots Misses Talbots Petites Talbots Accessories & Shoes Talbots Kids Talbots Woman and Talbots Outlet.

Desert Island Restaurants (480-945-0088) will open its second Thaifoon Restaurant at Irvine Spectrum Center in Irvine CA. The concept is also projected to open in San Diego CA; Las Vegas NV and Denver CO. The company operates seven franchises in three states trading as Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse Roy’s Restaurants and Thaifoon.

Hibbett Sporting Goods Inc. (205-942-4292) plans to open 32 stores in the remainder of fiscal 2002. The company is opening its 5 000 sq.ft. prototype in regional malls and dominant strip centers throughout the Southeast. The company operates 305 locations throughout the southeastern states.

Lowes Home Improvement (336-658-4000) plans a 136 253 sq.ft. store situated on 15 acres located on Vista Village Drive in Vista CA. The site has frontage to Highway 78 and would include a 24 020 sq.ft. garden center. The company is seeking a zoning change and development plan approval from the town’s Planning Commission. If construction begins by the end of the year the store will be scheduled to open by early 2003. The store is planned to connect to other big boxes that are part of the second phase of the Vista Village project. The company plans to open 35 to 38 stores in the third quarter of 2001 and 115 stores for the year.

Kohl’s Department Stores (262-703-7000) will open two stores in the Baltimore MD market as part of 24-store expansion. The company plans to open 70 stores by the end of 2002 and operates 358 locations nationwide.

Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc. (785-263-3350 ext. 129) plans to open two ALCO stores in the coming months. The company is in the process of remodeling 32 stores and operates 173 ALCO stores and 89 Duckwall locations.

Safeway (925-467-3000) will open a 60 000 sq.ft. supermarket at the Rivermark Center in Santa Clara CA. The mixed-use project will include a 136 000 sq.ft. retail element that the Safeway will anchor. The development is located at the intersection of Montague Expressway and Agnew Road. The center will also include a Starbucks Coffee and a wine and liquor store.

Aaron Rents Inc. (404-231-0011) opened 48 stores in the third quarter of 2001. The majority of the opens are located in former Heilig-Meyers locations. Aaron Rents has acquired 82 sites from Heilig-Meyers. The company plans to open 120 stores for the year and operates more than 600 stores nationwide.

Staples (770-645-4117) will open 23 942 sq.ft. stores at Gateway Station in Burleson TX and at North Richland Hills Mall in Dallas TX. The inline Gateway Station store and the freestanding North Richland Hills location are both scheduled to open in the summer of 2002. Staples will open a store located on Loop 250 in Dallas TX in February. The company will take a more conservative approach to store openings for 2002. The office-supply retailer will concentrate on expanding in existing markets rather than opening new markets. The company operates over 1 200 stores nationwide.

H&M (212-489-8777) will open a 40 000 sq.ft. store across from Macy’s New York flagship store on 34th Street in New York NY. The apparel retailer specializing in young girls clothing and accessories operates 21 stores in eastern states including three on Manhattan. The lease on the new store was signed with Vornado Realty Trust.

USA Baby (630-832-9880) will open a store at the Shoppes of Carrollwood in Carrollwood FL. The center is located on North Dale Mabry Highway and the store is expected to open in November. The baby products and furniture retailer operates 54 stores nationwide.

Albertson’s (817-568-3858) will open a supermarket at the intersection of Felicity and Carodolet Streets in New Orleans LA. Construction will begin this month on the project that was originally scheduled to open earlier this year. The company may also open a store in Thompson’s Station TN. The 14-acre site will also include outlots for a bank fast-food restaurants and a drugstore.

Domain Home Fashions (781-769-9130) opened stores in Manhattan and Hartsdale NY to begin its 20-store expansion over the coming months. The furniture retailer’s third Manhattan store is located at the intersection of West End Avenue and 66th Street directly beneath Ethan Allen. The company also opened an 8 000 sq.ft. store on Central Park Avenue in Hartsdale NY. The company operates 24 stores located in eastern states from Washington DC to Boston.

Steve Madden Ltd. (802-457-4474) will open a 1 148 sq.ft. store at Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee WI. The center is anchored by Marshall Fields and The Boston Store. The store is scheduled to open this fall. The shoe and accessories retailer plans seven additional locations for the remainder of fiscal 2001. The company operates 58 stores nationwide.

Footstar Inc. (201-934-2000) acquired a 2.8-acre parcel at the Stonecrest Development in Lithonia GA for a Just for Feet store. The sporting goods retailer will open a 14 100 sq.ft. store on the parcel located on Turner Hill Road. The company operates 90 stores nationwide.

Marquee Cinemas (304-255-4036) will open an eight-screen theater on the site of the former Carmike Theaters-owned Fort Henry Five in Kingsport TN. The theater is located at Fort Henry Mall and will be the company’s first unit in TN. The eight-unit theater chain operates in KY SC VA and WV.

Kroger (513-762-4000) opened a store with gas pumps at Campbell Station Commons in Spring Hill TN. The store is located on Highway 31 and is the first grocery store on the Williamson County side of the city. The company operates over 1 200 stores nationwide.

Steak-Out Franchising Inc. (678-533-6000) plans to open 15 Steak-Out locations in the Raleigh-Durham NC market by 2010. The restaurant chain operates two units in Raleigh. The company plans 82 openings throughout NC in that time frame. The 90-unit restaurant chain operates in the southern states and is franchising.

Classic Cinemas (630-968-1600) will operate the 18-screen theater at Charlestown Mall in St. Charles IL. The theater had been operated by Regal Cinemas. Classic Cinemas will renovate the Arcada Theater into a live performance space with second-run or classic movies during the week. The company operates 16 locations throughout northern IL.

Randalls Food Markets (713-268-3500) will open a 38 000 sq.ft. store in downtown Houston TX. The supermarket will be located on Louisiana Avenue two blocks south of the Pierce Elevated on the site of a former auto-repair shop. The store will feature a mezzanine with a Starbucks Coffee shop and an underground parking structure. The project is scheduled to open in the summer of 2002. The company operates 124 stores throughout TX.

Smart & Final (323-869-7500) will open 12 stores in 2001 and plans 15 to 17 store openings for 2002. The 226-unit chain operates stores in seven states and in Mexico.

Life Time Fitness Inc. (952-947-0000) will open a 200 000 sq.ft. club on the site of the former Rochester Hills Tennis & Swim Club in Rochester Hills MI. The company will renovate the existing facility to include rock climbing walls a spa and salon basketball and volleyball courts and six swimming pools. The renovations are scheduled to be completed by summer 2002 and will be the largest club in the 24-unit chain. The company operates clubs in MI MN OH IN and VA.

Factory-2-U Stores Inc. (858-637-4126) expects its store opening count to be at the low end of its predicted 46 to 53 unit opening range for the year. The company has experienced unexpected delays with landlords and developers. The company operates 263 stores in 14 states across the southern and southwestern states.

Hot Dog on a Stick Enterprises (760-930-0456) will open a Muscle Beach Lemonade & Hot Dog location at The Gateway in Salt Lake City UT and a co-branded unit with Wetzel’s Pretzels at International Plaza in Tampa FL. The 130-unit chain opened six company-owned stores this year. The company plans to open 10 to 15 units annually for the next five years and up to 300 co-branded units with Wetzel’s Pretzels.

The TJX Companies (508-390-2230) will open a 23 000 sq.ft. A.J. Wright store at Oxon Hill Plaza in Oxon Hill MD. The 148 430 sq.ft. center is located at the intersection of Oxon Hill and Livingston Roads and will include the first store for the concept in metropolitan Washington DC. The company will open 20 stores in 2001. The off-price retail chain will operate 45 stores by the end of the year.

Federated Department Stores Inc. (513-579-7267) will open a 110 000 sq.ft. Bon Marche store at the Redmond Towne Center in Redmond WA. Ground breaking is set for next spring with an opening scheduled for Fall 2003. The company is developing a prototype of The Bon Marche in Helena MT. The 65 000 sq.ft. unit will have checkout counters at the front of the store and a single floor. The company operates over 450 stores under the brands Macy’s Bloomingdale’s The Bon Marche Burdines Goldsmith’s Lazarus and Rich’s.

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina (336-724-3621) will open an 11 000 sq.ft. store at the mixed-use Morrison Plantation development in Mooresville NC. The store is expected to open in March and is located at the intersection of Williamson and Brawley School Roads at NC 150. The company has 19 stores throughout northwest NC.

The Atlanta Bread Company (770-432-0933) will open a store at Festival Plaza Shopping Center in Montgomery AL. The store will be located adjacent to Rave Motion Pictures. The company operates 107 stores in 21 states nationwide.

Shoe Carnival Inc. (812-867-4105) will open five units in the second half of 2001. The company opened 13 locations in the first half of 2001 and operates 178 units nationwide.

Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) will open a location in West Allis WI. The store is being constructed at the intersection of Highway 100 and Dakota Street and will be the first location in southeast WI. The doughnut-chain will also open a store in the Oak Creek Plaza in Vernon Hills IL. The company will also open two more units in the Denver CO area including a location in Aurora CO. The company has raised its number of store openings to 40 for fiscal 2002. The company will continue to open new markets and recently opened opened the Oklahoma City OK; Albuquerque NM and Modesto CA markets. The company operates 190 stores in 32 states.

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) may open a store anchoring a mixed-use project on the site of the former St. Thomas Housing Development in uptown New Orleans LA. The project will have to be approved by the City Council. A 200 000 sq.ft. Supercenter will be built just off Interstate 240 in Oklahoma City OK to replace the discount store location on southwest 74th Street. Wal*Mart plans to open 210 discount stores and supercenters in the US during 2002. The company plans to increase square footage by 40 million sq.ft. in fiscal 2002 an eight-percent increase over its fiscal 2001 total.
