Who's Opening & Where


Dollar General Corp. (615-855-4000) plans to open 600 to 700 stores in 2001 with the last 200 to 250 stores opening in the third and fourth quarters. The company currently operates 5 300 stores in 27 states.

Tweeters Home Entertainment Group (617-262-6620) will open an 8 500 sq.ft. store in Mesquite TX along with other TX stores in Southlake Houston Hulen and Frisco. Other stores are planned for 2002 in TN SC and Washington DC. The company currently operates 114 locations in TX AZ FL IL CA GA MA and PA.

Main Street and Main Inc. (602-852-9000) plans to open a TGI Friday’s before the end of 2001. Four Bamboo Clubs also are set to open: two in AZ at The Brickyards in Tempe and the Park Place Mall in Tucson; and two in FL one in Tampa and one in West Palm Beach.

Dr. Martens AirWair USA (503-222-6300) opened its first corporate-owned US shoe store in downtown Portland OR. Parent company R Groggs Group Ltd. of Britain has two Dr. Martens stores in England and two in France. The 2 000 sq.ft. Portland store will include an artist’s lounge featuring bands and performances.

Good Guys (510-747-6000) plans to open eight consumer electronics stores over the next two years. Two stores are expected to open in the fall of 2002 and six are planed for 2003.

Fry’s Electronics (408-487-1000) will open a 100 000 sq.ft. store at a former Builder’s Square location in the Parmer Crossing shopping center in Austin TX. The company operates 18 stores in CA AZ and TX.

Schlotzsky’s Inc. (512-236-3600) expects to open additional sub shops by the end of the year in conjunction with remodeling and replacing several under performing locations. Future units will include 3 200 sq.ft. freestanding locations as well as end-cap units in existing shopping centers. Four units were added this year bringing the company’s total of corporate-owned and franchised locations to 702 in 38 states Washington DC and abroad.

Fresh Brands Inc. (920-208-4100) expects to open or remodel several stores based on a prototype flagship Piggly Wiggly supermarket recently opened in Sheboygan WI. The store’s architecture features curved walls and ceilings as opposed to traditional big-box grocery stores. The company operates 97 corporate-owned and franchised stores trading as Piggly Wiggly and Dick’s Supermarkets throughout WI and northern IL.

Sharper Image Corp. (415-445-6226) will open at least 12 stores before the end of the year adding to the five recently opened. The company currently operates more than 100 stores nationwide.

Brookstone Inc. (603-577-8104) expects to open between 20 and 25 Brookstone specialty retail stores in the third and fourth quarters. The company currently operates 230 stores in 38 states.

O’Reilly Automotive Inc. (417-862-3333) plans to open about 200 stores in 2001 including some locations acquired when a deal for O’Reilly to merge with Mid-State a smaller auto parts retailer with 85 stores in KY IN TN GA AL FL and MI goes through. O’Reilly currently operates 732 stores in OK IA TX IL NE LA KS MS and AR.

Apple Computer Inc. (408-996-1010) is set to open a store in Germantown TN after conflicts with the town’s planning board are resolved. Problems have arisen over the town’s sign ordinance which prohibits internally illuminated signs and depictions of food humans and animals on company logos.

The May Department Stores Company (314-342-6300) opened a Hecht’s store at the Bowie Town Center in Bowie MD. The company plans 11 more openings in 2001: four Lord & Taylor locations three Foley’s stores and one each for its Hecht’s Robinsons-May Kaufmann’s and Famous-Barr concepts. The company operates 432 department stores and 137 David Bridal locations nationwide.

The Timberland Co. (603-772-9500) plans to open 100 Timberland concept shops across the country in the coming 12 months. Each store will feature an outdoor motif as a background to the company’s nature-inspired gear and apparel.

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) expects to open 22 stores across the Midwestern states in addition to stores in Atlanta GA and Oklahoma City OK. The company recently opened stores in El Paso TX and Chicago IL.

The Children’s Place (201-558-2400) opened 21 stores in July of 2001. The apparel retailer specializing in clothes for infants and young children operates over 475 locations nationwide. The company plans over 100 openings in the coming 18 months.

Tower Records (916-373-2500) opened a store on Boylston Street in Boston MA. The music and video retailer closed its location on Newbury Street in the Back Bay section. The company signed a temporary lease on its new site while it pursues longer-term opportunities. Tower Records operates 179 stores worldwide.

Domain Home Fashions (781-769-9130) expects to add 20 stores to the company’s 20-unit chain over the next three years.

Meijer (616-453-6711) is set to open a 193 000 sq.ft. superstore in Hoffman Estates IL. The project currently is under construction. When complete it also will feature a 130 000 sq.ft. home improvement store restaurants a gas station a bank and other retailers for a total of 415 312 sq.ft.

Founders Food & Firkins Ltd. (952-525-2070) is building a third Granite City Food and

Brewery restaurant in Fargo ND set to open in the fourth quarter. The location will join others in Sioux Falls SD and St. Cloud MN. The company is considering taking the concept national.

Chicago Pizza & Brewery Inc. (714-848-3747) will open a BJ’s restaurant in Chandler AZ next month. Another unit in Irvine CA recently opened. The company operates five Pietro’s restaurants in OR and 21 BJ’s units: 16 in CA one in Boulder CO and four in OR.

L.A. Fitness Sports Clubs (949-250-8400) will open 28 000 sq.ft. to 65 000 sq.ft. fitness centers in Warrington Huntington Valley and Springfield PA and Cherry Hill NJ. Units recently were added in Philadelphia East Norriton Oxford Valley and Havertown PA as well as Turnersville NJ. Additional units are planned.

Brinker International Inc. (972-770-3294) plans to open 88 to 105 company-owned restaurants and 28 to 35 joint-venture or franchised units including 74 to 81 Chili’s Grill & Bar locations in the current fiscal year. The company also is set to open several Corner Bakery & Cafe restaurants.

Neiman Marcus (214-761-2410) will open a 32 000 sq.ft. Last Call from Neiman Marcus store at Grapevine Mills in Grapevine TX. The store will be the chain’s first in north TX.
