Closings And Financial Woes

J.C. Penney Co. (972-431-1000) is closing an unprofitable home furnishings store location at the Southglenn Mall in Centennial, CO during June. The company operates 19 stores in CO.

Graves Supermarket (207-769-2181) closed a location at the Mt. Blue Shopping Plaza on Wilton Road in Farmington, ME. The closure is due to expected competition from a Wal*Mart Supercenter that will open later this year.

Payless ShoeSource, Inc. (785-295-6695) is closing 104 underperforming stores, including 67 Parade stores and 37 Payless ShoeSource stores. The closings of underperforming Parade stores will occur in smaller, less penetrated markets. The family footwear retailer operates 4,964 locations. Following the closings, the company will operate 192 Parade stores.

Duckwall-Alco Stores Inc. (785-263-3350) is closing an Alco location in New Castle, IN. The closure is part of a company review.

The May Department Stores Co. (314-342-6300) is closing an underperforming 120,000 sq.ft. Lord & Taylor location in Owings Mills Town Center in Owings Mills, MD this month. The company operates more than 85 Lord & Taylor stores in the U.S.

Albertson’s Inc. (208-385-6200) closed a 19,600 sq.ft. Acme supermarket location on Norwood Avenue in Ocean Township, NJ last month. The store was closed because it was too small to compete with neighboring supermarkets. In addition, the company plans to sell eight MO store locations and close a ninth as part of a plan to exit the southwest MO market. A location in Republic, MO closed last month and eight locations were sold to Roswil, Inc., which does business as Ramey/Price Cutter. Albertson’s Inc. operates more than 2,400 supermarkets in 33 states.

Heart to Heart Flowers and Gifts (563-794-9000), Waldenbooks (734-769-8345) and Braun’s (519-579-2453) have closed locations at the Duck Creek Mall in Bettendorf, IA.

Linens ‘n Things, Inc. (973-778-1300) is closing a location at the intersection of Rush and Ontario Streets in Chicago, IL. The company is closing the 42,000 sq.ft. store due to poor sales. The company operates 343 stores nationwide.

Walt’s Radiator & Muffler Inc. (253-922-5111) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and plans to close 12 stores and two distribution centers. The company, which is based in Tacoma, WA, operates 24 locations.

Hurry, Inc. (678-393-1294) closed the company’s two remaining Harry’s In A Hurry convenience store locations at Akers Mill Road and Powers Ferry Road in Atlanta, GA. The closures are part of the company’s sale of its stores and assets to Whole Foods Market Group, Inc. Previously, the company operated three megastores and five convenience stores in the Atlanta, GA metro area.

Sephora (877-737-4672), Bostonian (617-964-1222) and Esprit (800-556-9477) are closing locations at the MacArthur Center in Norfolk, VA. The Esprit closing is related to Esprit de Corp.’s sale of the Esprit trademark and assets to Esprit Holdings Ltd. This sale will result in the closing of the company’s 38 retail and outlet locations throughout the U.S.

Rite Aid Corp. (717-761-2633) is closing an underperforming location at 1451 South Broadway in Santa Maria, CA. The company operates two other drug stores in Santa Maria.

Sharon Luggage (877-754-6654) closed two stores as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Locations in Greensboro and Durham, NC were closed during February. The company operates 13 stores in NC and SC.
