Who's Opening & Where


Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) is opening a store at 11250 St. Augustine Road at the 170,276 sq.ft. Old St. Augustine Plaza in Jacksonville, FL by this Fall. The 87,000 sq.ft. location will occupy the space of a former Waccamaw HomePlace. The company currently operates two stores in Jacksonville.

Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open a location at 1691 Route 9 in Albany, NY. The site would be situated on a land area of 20 acres formerly occupied by Chaucer’s Restaurant and Banquet House. The typical Lowe’s store is approximately 121,000 sq.ft., with an additional 30,000 sq.ft. for a lawn and garden center. The center would be located across the street from a Home Depot. The company operates approximately 750 stores nationwide.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open two stores in the Memphis, TN area and a store near Birmingham, AL. The 40,000 sq.ft. Horn Lake, TN store is slated to open this year. Nationwide, the company plans to open 50 discount stores, as many as 185 supercenters, 25 Sam’s Clubs and as many as 20 neighborhood markets. The company currently operates 4,414 stores nationwide.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-726-8917) is planning to open two stores in Seattle, WA. The first store to open will be located in north Seattle at Aurora Avenue North and North 125th Street, with the second opening located at the intersection of First Avenue South and South Holgate Street in the Sodo neighborhood next to Safeco Field. The company also opened a store in Spokane, WA at the intersection of Sullivan and Indiana just east of the Spokane Valley Mall. Krispy Kreme also plans to open a store at 2031 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard in West Palm Beach, FL. The 4,500 sq.ft. eatery will have an art deco design. The company also plans to open stores in MT, WY and Amarillo, El Paso and Lubbock, TX.

Clark Retail Enterprises, Inc. (630-366-3160) is planning to open five White Hen stores by the end of October in the downtown Chicago, IL area. One of the five stores will debut White Hen’s new concept called White Hen Express, which will be 1,900 sq.ft. and located at 550 West Washington in a high-rise office building. The remaining stores will be located at 71 East Monroe, 200 South Racine, 627 West Jackson and 201 East Ohio. Clark Retail Enterprises, Inc. operates 1,315 locations, consisting of 836 company-owned and 186 branded jobber gasoline and convenience stores and 293 franchise-operated White Hen Pantry convenience food stores.

Target Corp. (612-370-6948) is planning to open a store at the intersection of McCawley Road and Jefferson Boulevard at a development called Jefferson Pointe in Okolona, KY. The store would be located on a land area of 10.1 acres behind the Jefferson Mall. The company also is planning to build a 174,000 sq.ft. Super Target at the intersection of Millenia Mall Boulevard and Coroy Road in Orlando, FL. Target also is planning to open a 126,000 sq.ft. Super Target at the Camp Creek Marketplace Shopping Center located at Camp Creek Parkway and Interstate 285 in Atlanta, GA. Opening is slated for Summer 2003. The company is planning to grow by about 90 stores a year. The company currently operates 1,019 stores, 51 of which are Super Targets.

Michaels Stores, Inc. (800-642-4235) is planning to open 150 Village Craft stores in the U.S. and Canada. The company currently operates 720 Michaels stores and 143 Aaron Brothers locations. The first store opened in Prescott, AZ and will be followed by two openings this Fall in Rehobeth Beach, DE and Aberdeen, WA. Next year, Village Crafts will open in Wenatchee and Chehalis, WA; Pocatello, ID; Ukiah, CA; Roseburg, OR; and Rome, GA. These stores are half the size of a typical Michaels store, averaging 11,790 sq.ft.

Safeway, Inc. (925-467-3000) plans to open as many as 85 stores and remodel another 250 this year. The company also plans to open a 52,000 sq.ft. store in Continental Ranch, AZ. The store will anchor a retail center at the intersection of Twin Peaks and Silverbell Roads. The center will include three restaurants, shops, a convenience store with gas pumps and an auto parts store. The company currently operates 1,782 stores nationwide and in Canada.

Benihana, Inc. (305-593-0770) has opened two teppenyaki restaurants this year, including ones in the Dallas/Ft. Worth market in Las Colinas, TX and the other in The Woodlands, TX near Houston. The company also is planning to open two other teppenyaki restaurants at locations in Westbury, NY and Scottsdale, AZ.

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) is planning to open as many as five stores in the Wichita, KS area. A 1,700 sq.ft. store with a drive-thru is expected to open this Fall at Central and Rock. The company operates 5,500 stores nationwide, including 10 freestanding locations in KS.

Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) plans to open as many as 100 restaurants this year. The company’s goal is to reach 2,300 operating units in eight or nine years.

Barnes & Noble (212-633-3300) is opening a store in Salisbury, MD. The 22,000 sq.ft. bookstore will be located in Salisbury Commons on Route 13. The opening is slated for March 2003.

Panera Bread Co. (314-633-7100) is opening 17 bakery/cafes in central Los Angeles County, CA.

Buffalo’s Wild Wings Grill & Bar (952-593-9943) plans to open its 200th location by the end of this year. The company estimates that it will have 400 operating units by the end of 2005.

Atlanta Bread Co. (770-432-0933) is planning to open a 2,258 sq.ft. location at 1720 West End Avenue in Nashville, TN. The company also is looking for sites in Bellevue, Green Hills and Brentwood, TN for 2003 openings. Atlanta Bread Co. also is planning to open locations in Fullerton, CA at the Fullerton Town Center; Las Vegas, NV at the Centennial Center; Lexington, KY at the Hamburg Pavilion; Asheville, NC at Henderson Road and Rogers, as well as in AK on West Walnut Street.

Quizno’s Corp. (720-931-2211) is planning to open 1,000 units this year. The company operates more than 1,500 locations in 45 states and eight countries.

Max & Erma’s Restaurants, Inc. (614-431-5800) plans to open three Max & Erma’s restaurants by the end of the year and as many as seven restaurants during the fiscal year 2003.

McDonald’s Corp. (630-623-3000) plans to open 50 restaurants over the next five years in the Sacramento, CA area. The company currently operates 138 restaurants in the area. The new stores likely will be in Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln, El Dorado Hills, Elk Grove and Natomas, CA.

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) plans to open about 80 stores next year. The company is focusing on the Los Angeles, CA, Phoenix, AZ and Las Vegas, NV markets. Kohl’s, Inc. currently operates 420 stores in 32 states, but plans to open eight stores this month and 24 stores in October. The company also is planning to open stores at both The Crossing in Clifton Park/Halfmoon and the Hannaford Plaza in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Galyan’s Trading Co. (317-532-0200) is planning to open nine stores this year throughout the nation, including a new location in Colorado Springs, CO. The company has identified 150 potential locations for new stores. Galyan’s seeks areas with at least 250,000 households earning $75,000 as the average income.
