Who's Opening & Where


Topz (800-996-8679) is planning to open 250 restaurants during the next five years. The hamburger chain, which specializes in a low-fat menu and customized drinks with a syrup bar, currently has six units open.

Target Corp. (612-370-6948) is planning to open a 126,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Alpine Road and Route 173 in Machesney Park, IL. The site is situated on a land area of 10 acres. The store will anchor a 310,000 sq.ft. center. The company currently operates more than 1,000 stores nationwide. Target Corp. is planning to open 100 stores during 2003.

White Castle, Inc. (614-228-5781), Aldi’s (866-642-7978) and Meijer’s (616-453-6711) are planning to open locations at the intersection of 143rd Street and Bell Road in Homer Township, IL. The Meijer’s locations will occupy a space of 192,000 sq.ft. Meijer also is planning to open two stores throughout Cincinnati, OH and another six throughout IL, MI and OH and one in Albany, IN.

Portillo’s Hot Dogs (630-954-3773) is planning to open three new units this Fall. The hot dog stand chain, which has a 1960s diner theme, currently operates 24 locations throughout IL.

The Melting Pot Restaurants, Inc. (813-881-0055) is planning to open a 5,600 sq.ft. The Melting Pot restaurant at the intersection of 15th and H Streets in Sacramento, CA. The company currently operates 63 restaurants nationwide, with 10 more in development.

Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) is planning to open a 1,600 sq.ft. Sonic restaurant at the intersection of Gray Avenue and Highway 20 in Yuba City, CA during 2003. The chain currently operates 2,400 drive-in restaurants throughout 30 states.

Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc. (508-378-7211) is planning to spend the next three years replacing, renovating and opening stores throughout the New England region. The company currently operates 187 stores. The stores average between 60,000 sq.ft. and 65,000 sq.ft. Shaw’s Supermarkets is opening a location in Boston, MA during Spring 2003, as well as stores in Providence and Cranston, RI.

Staples, Inc. (508-253-8261) is planning to open 75 stores ranging in size from 10,000 sq.ft. to 20,000 sq.ft. throughout the nation during 2003.

The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) and Belk, Inc. (704-357-1000) are planning to open locations in Wilson County, TN. The Kroger Co. currently operates two stores throughout Wilson County and has locations in Lebanon and Mount Juliet, TN. Belk, Inc. currently operates 207 department stores.

Bob Evans (800-272-7675) is planning to open a restaurant at West Chestnut Street in North Franklin Township, PA. The site formerly was occupied by Elby’s Restaurant. Opening is slated during Spring 2003.

Dell, Inc. (800-www-dell) opened two kiosks throughout San Antonio, TX. One kiosk is at South Park Mall at 2310 Southwest Military Drive, while the other is at North Star Mall at 7400 San Pedro Avenue. The company is expanding its kiosk program to 12 new markets, including San Antonio; Nashville, TN; Charlotte, NC; Portland, OR; Louisville, KY; and Las Vegas, NV.

Zoup! (888-778-7687) is planning to offer franchises by the end of the year. The company is currently building its fifth location in MI. The restaurant’s menu has four categories, including spicy, vegetarian, low-fat and dairy free.

Tijuana Flats (888-679-1332) is planning to expand into new markets. The expansion will be fueled by franchising. The Tex-Mex food chain currently operates 13 restaurants throughout FL.

United Wireless, Inc. (216-573-9000) opened three stores throughout Worthington, OH. The stores are located at 6708 Perimeter Loop, 3890 Morse Road and 7172 East High Street.

Bass Pro Shops (800-Bass-Pro) is planning to open a 102,000 sq.ft. Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World during Summer 2003 at Colonial Mall in Myrtle Beach, SC. The store will include a 12,000 sq.ft. restaurant called Islamorada Fish Co. The company currently operates 16 locations and is planning to open four stores next year.

Macy’s (212-695-4400) plans to open a store at County East Mall in Anaheim, CA. Plans call for a two-level, 110,000 sq.ft. department store and a new main mall entrance to be built near the 494,000 sq.ft. mall’s former JCPenney store. Macy’s is expected to open during Fall 2004. The store will co-anchor with Gottschalks, Mervyns’ and Sears.

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) is planning to open 1,200 Starbucks stores worldwide. The company is planning to operate 25,000 stores worldwide, including 6,000 stores in Asia, 7,500 stores in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and 1,500 stores in Latin America.

Fresh Brands, Inc. (920-208-4100) is planning to open two Piggly Wiggly Fresh Market Circle stores during 2003. The company also is planning to open its 101st store by the end of the year in Oostburg, WI, as well as opening franchised replacement stores in West Bend and Howard, WI. During 2003, the company plans to open its 102nd store in Kenosha, WI; expand and renovate franchised stores in Mosinee, Cross Plains and Mayville, WI; and franchised replacement stores in Omro, Union Grove and Juneau, WI.

Jack In The Box (858-571-2121) is planning to open 200 franchised units and about 500 additional company-operated locations. The company also is planning to open convenience stores adjacent to full-sized Jack In The Box restaurants and co-branded gas stations. The company plans to open eight Quick Stuff shops nationwide during 2003. The shops will occupy spaces of 2,000 sq.ft. Up to 25% of the 90 company-owned stores built in the next five to seven years will be co-branded sites. The company will operate the restaurant, store and gas stations in a co-branding agreement with Chevron, Shell and other refineries. The company currently operates 1,850 quick-serve restaurants throughout 17 states.

Finagle A Bagel (617-737-0900) is planning to open two to four units annually. The bagel shop chain currently operates 17 locations throughout the metro Boston, MA area.

Dr. Mojoe opened a 20,000 sq.ft. store at 761 North High Street in Columbus, OH. The store was launched by partners Joseph Schottenstein and Jason Monus. Schottenstein is the son of Jay Schottenstein, chairman of Columbus, OH-based Value City Department Stores, Inc. and chairman and chief executive of American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. Dr. Mojoe is a start-up enterprise separate from the businesses of Jay Schottenstein. Prices range from $89 to $199 for jeans, $20 to $150 for shirts and denim jackets to $300. The company is working with Method, Inc. of Columbus on an interior design and the company logo. The owners describe the shop’s design as a "Soho" look with concrete floors and floating shelves. The store will offer coffee, bottled water and chocolates bearing the Dr. Mojoe logo with services such as same-day alterations.

O’Charley’s (615-256-8500) is planning to open as many as five Jacksonville, FL locations during the next three to five years. The company currently operates 180 restaurants, primarily throughout the southeast.
