Who's Opening & Where


BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. (508-651-7400) is planning to open five stores throughout metro Atlanta, GA in 2002. The 115,000 sq.ft. stores will be located in McDonough, Woodstock, Cumming, Conyers and Newnan. The stores in Newnan and McDonough will be in shopping centers and the other three stores will be freestanding. The company operates 118 stores nationwide.

Kroger (513-762-4000) plans to open five Food 4 Less stores in the Chicago, IL area during 2002. The company operates 110 warehouse supermarkets in CA and NV.

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) plans to open its first store in southern MD at the Eye Care Plaza at Route 235 and Route 4 in Lexington Park, MD. Neighboring retailers include Verizon Wireless, Mattress Warehouse and Dr. Schwartzberg’s Eye Care Center.

Save-A-Lot (314-592-9100) is opening an 18,000 sq.ft. grocery store at Bladen Plaza in Bladensburg, MD during April. The company operates about 1,000 stores in 36 states.

Eckerd Corp. (727-395-6000) plans to open a 15,000 sq.ft. drug store at the Turnpike Shopping Center in Fairfax, VA during April 2002. The company operates more than 1,800 drug stores nationwide.

Girbaud (212-755-4433) will open at 41 Wooster Street in New York, NY in 2002. The 3,150 sq.ft. store will be the first U.S. store owned by Francois Girbaud, a Paris-based designer. Two Girbaud locations operate independently in Chicago, IL and Los Angeles, CA. Girbaud’s core American customer base is located in the midwest, however, the designer may open locations in Dallas, TX and Miami, FL.

J.Crew Group Inc. (212-209-2500) opened an 8,500 sq.ft. store on Madison Avenue in New York, NY. The company operates 135 locations and plans to operate 260 stores by 2005.

Albertson’s Inc. (208-385-6200) plans to open a 57,000 sq.ft. grocery store in Forest Grove, OR. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2003. In addition, the company is opening a 57,000 sq.ft. Jewel-Osco supermarket in the Spartan Plaza at Taylor and Airport Roads in Chicago, IL. The store is expected to open during the Summer. The Jewel-Osco is replacing an older 40,000 sq.ft. Jewel location. The company operates about 2,500 stores in the U.S.

Dick’s Sporting Goods (412-809-0100) plans to open 20 to 30 stores in 2002. The company currently operates 125 stores nationwide.

Virgin Entertainment Group (877-484-7446) plans to open its 23rd North American Virgin Megastore at Metropolis in Toronto, Canada. The 40,000 sq.ft. store will be the largest music/entertainment destination in Canada and the anchor tenant for the development. The store, which will be the second Virgin Megastore in Canada, will open during 2003. The company also plans to open a Virgin Megastore in Boston during early 2002. Growth plans call for about 35 Virgin Megastores operating throughout North America by 2007.

Olive Garden (407-245-5366) is expected to open a 6,500 sq.ft. restaurant at 2285 Greeley Mall in Greeley, CO during late 2002. Darden Restaurants operates more than 670 Olive Garden’s in the U.S.

New Seasons Market (503-292-1987) plans to open a grocery store location in 2002 and another in 2003. The company opened a store in the Concordia neighborhood of Portland, OR in December. The company operates four stores in the Portland area.

L.A. Fitness International LLC (800-600-2540) is opening a freestanding health club facility in Fort Washington, PA in the fourth quarter of 2002. The company also plans to open locations in Phoenix, AZ and Springfield, PA in March; Huntingdon Valley, PA in April; Boca Raton, FL and Norcross, GA in August and Monterey Park, CA in October. The company operates fitness centers in AZ, CA, FL, GA, NJ and PA.

The Custom Shop (419-841-6112) plans to open 100 menswear stores during the next three years. Plans call for some locations to open within department stores, such as Nordstrom’s. The company operates four stores in CA, MI, TX and Washington, DC.

Cabela’s (308-254-5505) plans to open a 150,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of I-435 and I-70 in Kansas City, KS. The store, which features hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, will be the company’s eighth.

Champs Sports (941-748-0577) plans to open 200 to 300 Champs in the U.S. during the next few years. The company operates more than 570 stores in the U.S.

The Finish Line (317-899-1022) plans to open 25 stores of 4,000 sq.ft. to 5,000 sq.ft. in 2002. About 45 Finish Line stores operate in the U.S.

Footaction (972-501-5000) plans to open 15 stores in 2002 and close 55 underperforming locations. The company operates more then 530 stores in the U.S.

Foot Locker (212-720-3700) plans to open 700 stores in the U.S. during the next few years, including 300 in urban markets. Plans also call for the remodeling or relocation of 200 stores and the shrinkage or closure of 200 stores. The company operates about 1,450 stores in the U.S.

Galyan’s Trading Company (317-532-0200) plans to open seven stores during 2002 and double its store base during the next three years. The sporting goods retailer operates 26 stores in the U.S.

Golfsmith (800-456-3344) plans to open 12 golf superstores during 2002. The golf equipment and apparel retailer operates 26 stores in the U.S.

Pacific Sunwear (714-693-8066) plans to open 75 PacSun, Pacific Sunwear Outlet and d.e.m.o. stores in 2002. The retailer of apparel for teens also plans to expand 15 high-performing locations. Pacific Sunwear operates 684 locations in the U.S.

The Sports Authority (954-735-1701) plans to open three to five locations in 2002. The sporting goods retailer operates 199 locations in the U.S.

Kitchen Etc. (800-876-9808) plans to begin opening new stores during July as part of the company’s growth goals. Three to five stores are planned for 2002. The retailer of kitchen specialty merchandise operates 13 stores in CT, MA, NH, RI and VT.

Laundry Factory (212-986-9193) is opening a 5,000 sq.ft. coin-operated laundry facility in Franklin Square Shopping Center in Bloomfield, NJ. The location will be the company’s 11th.

Cole Computer Corp. (888-479-9093) opened its 14th location last month in Tulsa, OK. The white-box system builder of personal computers plans to open additional locations in AR, OK and TX during the year. The company’s stores operate under the trade name Computer Masters in AR and OK and Your Computer Masters Store in TX.

Ned Kelly’s-Ned Devine’s (703-793-7376) is seeking expansion opportunities in Fairfax and Loudon Counties, VA. The Australian-Irish pubs, which has one location in Herndon, VA, is seeking spaces of 5,000 sq.ft. to 8,000 sq.ft.

Shari’s Management Corp. (503-605-4299) plans to build a 4,700 sq.ft. Shari’s in Vancouver, WA on 98th Circle. The location is expected to open in the Fall. The company operates 103 full-service restaurants in CA, CO, ID, NE, OR, WA and WY.
