Who's Opening & Where Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) expects to open about 60 Best Buy stores in major U.S. markets during its 2003 fiscal year, which begins this March. About half of the stores are expected to be 30,000 sq.ft. and the other half will be 45,000 sq.ft. Stores will open in five states where the company has no presence: AK, ID, UT, WV and WY. Eight to 10 stores are expected to open in the NY area, including the company’s first store in Manhattan. In addition, the company will open a flagship store in downtown San Francisco, CA. More than 1,900 Best Buy stores operate in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Ross Stores, Inc. (510-505-4400) plans to open its 16th and 17th Ross ‘Dress for Less’ stores in the Houston, TX area. Houston’s 16th store will be 32,000 sq.ft. and located at the Baytown Shopping Center. The company’s 17th store will be 30,187 sq.ft. and located at Texas 290. The company operates more than 400 stores nationwide.Talbots Inc. (781-749-7600) plans to open 82 stores this year and 85 stores in 2003. The company operates 800 locations throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Family Sports Concepts Inc. (813-226-2333) plans to open 12 Beef ‘O’Brady’s locations in the Louisville, KY area. The majority of Beef ‘O’Brady’s restaurants are 2,600 sq.ft. to 3,000 sq.ft. and located in strip centers. The company operates more than 65 family-style restaurants in FL, KY and NC and has an additional 23 units planned or under construction.Bi-Lo Inc. (864-675-5521) is opening a 42,000 sq.ft. supermarket during late 2002 or early 2003 in Simpsonville, SC. The location will be a prototype testing two concepts __ an attached pharmacy with a separate entrance and a drive-thru window for the deli department. More than 420 Bi-Lo’s operate in the southeastern U.S. Damon’s International (614-442-7900) opened two Damon’s Grill locations last month, the first of five restaurants scheduled to open in the first quarter of this year. The restaurants were opened in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and in Fogelsville, PA. The company operates 140 locations worldwide. Hennes & Mauritz Corp. (212-489-8777) plans to expand its U.S. operations to 85 stores by 2003. The Swedish-based fashion retailer currently operates more than 21 stores in the U.S.Sport Chalet, Inc. (818-790-2717) is opening a 40,000 sq.ft. store in Summerlin, NV during late-Fall 2002. The specialty sporting goods store will have an on-site pool for scuba training classes. The company operates 26 stores in southern CA and NV.Rubio’s Restaurants Inc. (760-929-8226) plans to open seven Rubio’s Baja Grill restaurants in its core markets this year. The Mexican restaurant chain operates, licenses or franchises more than 139 restaurants in AZ, CA, CO, NV and UT.Wal*Mart Stores Inc. (650-837-5000) will open a Wal*Mart and Sam’s Club at Texas 114 and Ira E. Woods Avenue in Grapevine, TX. The stores are expected to open by October. In addition, a 149,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart Supercenter is planned for a 50-acre parcel in Middletown, DE. The company operates 1,651 Wal*Mart stores, 1,026 Supercenters and 486 Sam’s Clubs in the U.S. Frisch’s Restaurants, Inc. (513-961-2660) plans to open five Golden Corral restaurants during the next five months. Long-term plans include the addition of 28 restaurants through 2007 in existing markets. The company operates 13 Golden Corral locations in OH and Louisville, KY. Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc. (404-443-2900) plans to open eight stores in 2002. The company operates 103 furniture showrooms in 14 southern states. California Pizza Kitchen Inc. (310-342-5000) plans to open about 17 restaurants this year, with three restaurants planned to open in the first quarter. The pizza chain operates, licenses or franchises 131 restaurants. Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. (781-380-8000) is opening a Stop & Shop on South Willow Street in Manchester, NH. The location was last tenanted by Bradlees. The store will be the company’s first in NH. More than 320 Stop & Shops operate in New England, NJ and NY. Fresh Choice, Inc. (408-776-0799) opened a restaurant in Union City, CA last month. The company, which operates buffet-style restaurants, plans to open two additional CA locations in 2002. The company operates 52 restaurants in CA, TX and WA __ 48 under the Fresh Choice and Zoopa names and four as Fresh Choice Express. Famous Dave’s of America, Inc. (952-294-1300) plans to open 61 franchised restaurants. The company operates 37 locations and franchises 19 barbeque restaurants in AL, GA, IA, IL, IN, MD, NE, OH, SD, TN, UT, VA and WI. Boston Pizza International, Inc. (604-270-1108) opened a Boston Pizza location at the intersection of Highway 11 and 41st Avenue in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada this month. The company also will open its first CO restaurant, Boston the Gourmet Pizza, in Grand Junction during the Spring. Additional U.S. openings include a Crown Point, CO location and an Anchorage, AK location by the Summer. The company also plans to open 30 to 45 restaurants in eastern Canada by the end of 2003 and expand its U.S. presence to a total of 35 restaurants by the end of 2003. The company currently operates more than 150 locations.PickUpStix, Inc. (949-361-3189) plans to open six Pick Up Stix Chinese restaurants in CA during the next three years. The company operates more than 55 locations in AZ and CA. Stride Rite Corp. (617-824-6000) is opening 50 stores, including 40 children’s shoe stores and 10 outlet stores. The company is opening the stores to offset revenue loss from the company’s withdrawal from the shoe departments of Federated Department Stores Inc. Meritage Hospitality Group Inc. (616-776-2600) plans to open eight to 10 Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers restaurants in 2002. The company, a Wendy’s franchisee, currently operates 39 Wendy’s restaurants throughout western and southern MI. Too, Inc. (614-479-3500) plans to open 50 to 55 Limited Too stores in 2002. Nationwide, the company operates more than 400 stores selling apparel for girls between seven and 14 years old. Ted’s Montana Grill (614-228-9857) opened in Columbus, OH last month. The restaurant, which specializes in bison, is the first for Ted Turner, founder of CNN and vice chairman of AOL Time Warner. Plans call for 10 additional locations in 2002, including three in Columbus, OH, four in Atlanta, GA and three in Denver, CO. Anne Klein (212-626-6100) is opening a 3,200 sq.ft. flagship store at 417 West Broadway in New York, NY this Spring. Kasper ASL, Anne Klein’s parent company, operates 26 Anne Klein retail outlet stores. IHOP Corp. (818-240-6055) is opening a restaurant at the intersection of San Marnan Drive and Sears Street in Waterloo, IA. The company received city council approval to demolish a vacant Boston Market building and construct a new restaurant. In addition, an IHOP is expected to open in Mishawaka, IN during July. The company operates more than 900 restaurants in 41 states and Canada. |
