Who's Opening Tricon Global Restaurants (502-874-1000) expects to open 200 franchised and company-owned KFC locations during 2002. In the U.S., the company operates 1,260 KFC restaurants and franchises and licenses 4,156 locations. In addition, through an agreement with Back Yard Burgers (901-367-0888), the company will open 10 multibrand restaurants in AR. The deal will pair Back Yard Burgers locations with KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut restaurants throughout the state. Back Yard Burgers Inc. operates 104 units in 16 states, including 14 locations in AR. The Wet Seal, Inc. The average size of the new stores will be about 3,750 sq.ft. to 4,000 sq.ft. for Wet Seal, 2,750 sq.ft. to 3,000 sq.ft. for Arden B. and 2,500 sq.ft. to 2,750 sq.ft. for Zutopia. (770-433-8211) is opening a 120,000 sq.ft. store with a garden center in Belleville, MO. The store will anchor the Swansea Town Center. Construction is expected to begin in the Spring. The company also is opening a store in Chicopee, MA. Wegmans (800-934-6267) is opening a 115,000 sq.ft. supermarket at the intersection of Route 33 and Route 248 in Easton, PA. The cafe chain, which features, soups, sandwiches, salads, bagels, fruit and coffee, operates 44 locations in Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA; and Chicago, IL. 99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) plans to grow its store base by 25% during 2002, including additional stores in Las Vegas, NV; Phoenix, AZ and central CA. The company plans to open 475 drug stores during fiscal 2002, which ends in August. The company plans to operate more than 6,000 stores by 2010. The company operates more than 740 home improvement stores in 42 states. The Glik Co. (618-876-6717) is opening two stores in WI. The company purchased the Eagle River and Rhinelander locations from DeByle’s Inc. The stores are 12,000 sq.ft. and 18,000 sq.ft., which are larger than the chain’s typical 7,000 sq.ft. store. Plans also include two additional store openings in March and August of this year. The company currently operates 52 locations in six midwestern states. Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) is opening 15 full-line stores this year and plans to remodel 50 stores. Seven of the 15 planned openings are relocations. (781-444-7222) plans to open 75 Candies stores in outlet malls and value centers throughout the U.S. The company expects to open 10 stores in CA, FL and Puerto Rico by mid year.
