Who's Opening & Where


Dewar’s Fine Candies (661-322-0933) opened a location on Hageman Road in Bakersfield, CA last month and plans to open a store in San Luis Obispo, CA during Summer 2002. The 3,000 sq.ft. Bakersfield soda-shop-and-candy-counter store is the company’s second. The company plans to open an another store in southwest Bakersfield during early 2003.

Johnson Development Corp. (310-319-1850) plans to open more than 100 Fatburger locations nationwide in both urban and suburban markets. Fatburger operates 47 restaurants in AZ, CA, NV and WA. New sites are planned in CA and NV along with 12 other states during the next five years.

Worldwide Restaurant Concepts, Inc. (818-662-9800) plans to open two Pat & Oscar’s restaurants in southern CA during the coming six months. The company, formerly known as Sizzler International, Inc., operates, franchises or joint ventures 341 Sizzler and 13 Pat & Oscar’s restaurants.

Stater Bros. Holdings Inc. (909-783-5000) will open its 156th supermarket during May in Chino Hills, CA. The company operates 155 supermarkets in CA.

Boeing Co. (312-544-2000) opened its 15th retail location at 100 North Riverside Plaza in Chicago, IL. The stores sell aviation-related merchandise, including games, books, clothing, jewelry and model planes.

Staples Business Depot (877-360-8500) is opening a 26,500 sq.ft. Staples at the intersection of Ottowa Street and Strasburg Road in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada next month. The Canadian division of Staples, Inc. operates more than 190 stores in Canada.

Federated Department Stores Inc. (212-704-3300) is opening a 235,000 sq.ft. Bloomingdale’s at the 1.3 million sq.ft. Mall at Millenia in Orlando, FL. The department store and mall are slated to open in October. Macy’s and Neiman Marcus also are expected to tenant the center.

Pret A Manger (646-728-0505) will open a 1,770 sq.ft. eatery at 237 Park Avenue, its fifth in New York, NY. The company operates 115 locations worldwide and plans to establish 40 new locations in New York during the next three years.

H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (210-938-8000) is opening upscale Central Market grocery stores in Plano and Dallas, TX during Spring 2002. Central Market stores average about 75,000 sq.ft. H.E. Butt Grocery Co. operates 282 supermarkets in TX, LA and Mexico.

Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp. (609-387-7800) will open a 80,000 sq.ft. store at the South DeKalb Mall in Decatur, GA. The store is expected to open in September. The company operates more than 280 stores nationwide.

Green Tea Terrace, Inc. (310-443-9910) opened a 1,700 sq.ft. flagship location at 1037 Westwood Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA. The company, which currently operates two green tea stores, plans to open 30 locations in major U.S. cities during the next three years.

Superior Super Warehouse (310-637-1466) is planning to open a colorful, graphic-intense supermarket in Covina, CA at a 70,000 sq.ft. former Sav Max Discount Grocery store that is being renovated. The company operates 14 stores in southern CA and plans to open four stores in the Inland Empire region this year.

Hot Topic, Inc. (626-839-4681) is planning to open more than 70 stores this year. The mall-based retailer of apparel and accessories operates 340 stores in the U.S.

Linens ‘n Things Inc. (973-778-1300) is opening stores in Waterbury, CT; Wiliston, VT and Cortland, NY. The company also is adding six stores in CA, two in Canada, one in Billings, MT and one in Spokane, WA. The company operates 342 stores in 43 states and four Canadian provinces.

Hibbett Sporting Goods Inc. (205-942-4292) plans to open about 55 Hibbett Sports stores in fiscal 2002, which ends in January 2003. The company operates 294 Hibbett Sports stores, which average about 5,000 sq.ft., as well as 16 smaller-format Sports Additions athletic shoe stores and four larger-format Sports & Co. superstores.

Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin & Metropolitan Chicago, Inc. (312-491-2900) plans to open 20 stores in the Chicago, IL-area during the next five years. The company currently operates five stores in and around Chicago.

Footstar Inc. (201-934-2000) expects to open 15 to 20 Just For Feet stores in 2002. In addition, about 10 to 20 Footaction stores will be opened this year. The company operates more than 530 Footaction locations and 90 Just For Feet superstores.

Menards (715-876-2000) is opening a home improvement store on eight acres at 573 Prior Avenue in St. Paul, MN. The company operates 160 locations nationwide.

G+G Retail, Inc. (212-279-4961), a retailer of junior and preteen apparel, plans to open 20 Rave and Rave Girl stores in 2002.

Costco (800-774-2678) is opening a warehouse store at Randhurst Shopping Center in Mount Prospect, IL in Fall 2002. A store at Loop 1604 and Highway 281 in San Antonio, TX also is under construction. The company operates 385 warehouse stores internationally.

Bed Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) is opening a two-level, 35,000 sq.ft. store at Grand Plaza, which is located at the intersection of State and Ohio Streets in Chicago, IL. The company operates more than 370 stores nationwide and has plans to open about 88 stores in 2002.

Haircolorxpress International LLC (954-788-3020) is opening a hair color and cosmetics salon at the Shoppes at Hunter’s Creek in Orlando, FL during March. The company operates three salons and plans to have 10,000 locations operating by 2010.

Safeway Inc. (925-944-4000) plans to continue its expansion, opening as many stores in 2002 as the company did in 2001. In addition, the company plans to continue to roll out its new design in new and remodeled stores. The supermarket’s new concept includes sushi bars and pizza stands. The company opened a location in Dublin, CA last month and is opening a 33,000 sq.ft. store at One King Street in San Francisco, CA. Construction is expected to be complete by mid-2003. In addition, Safeway also will replace a 41,000 sq.ft. Thiftway at the Murrayhill Marketplace in Beaverton, OR. There are more than 1,650 Safeway stores across the U.S. and Canada.

Jos A. Bank Clothiers Inc. (410-239-2700) plans to open 20 to 30 stores in 2002. The men’s apparel chain operates 135 stores nationwide.

The North Face (510-618-3500) plans to open a 7,500 sq.ft. store at 423 North Beverly Drive at Brighton Way in Beverly Hills, CA during the Spring. The store is a prototype of a new concept and will feature authentic and multicultural design pieces from Nepal, Thailand, Pakistan, Alaska and Siberia, intertwined with modern elements that represent the technical aspects of the company’s product lines. The Beverly Hills store will be the company’s fourth in CA and eighth nationwide.

Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) will open two Sears Great Indoors stores on U.S. 10 West in the Houston, TX area in the first quarter of 2002. The company operates more than 860 full-line stores nationwide and 13 Sears Great Indoors stores.
