(717-757-8181) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is conducting a liquidation of the company’s remaining 200 dollar stores. Of the remaining stores 193 operate as Dollar Zone and the rest are older variety stores operating as McCrory McCrory Dollar TG&Y TG&Y Dollar GC Murphy and JJ Newberry. The stores range from 6 000 sq.ft. to 10 000 sq.ft. for the dollar store formats and 15 000 sq.ft. to 40 000 sq.ft. for the variety stores. The company operates 139 stores in the eastern and southeastern areas of the U.S. from CT to FL and stores also are operated in AZ CA IL IN LA MI NM OH OR TN and TX. Frank’s Nursery & Crafts Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February and has closed 78 stores in the past two years. The company currently operates 183 stores. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (201-573-9700) is closing 39 SuperFresh stores including a store in Wilmington DE. The company which previously operated more than 120 SuperFresh locations is closing the stores to boost operating profits. The company is looking for other Costa Mesa locations. This is the first Whole Foods Market to close however the company plans to close two additional stores outside of CA this year. The company operates 126 stores nationwide. Ames Department Stores Inc. (860-257-2000) is closing 54 stores nationwide in its third round of closings since the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August. Liquidation began in December and the stores are expected to close in February or March. Stores in Middletown CT Falmouth and Sanford ME and Bristol Fairless Hills Lancaster and Reading PA are among the stores to be closed. Of the stores that will be closed 25 previously were operated by Hills Stores Co. which Ames Department Stores Inc. acquired in December 1998. The company additionally began the liquidation of 16 stores in KY IL IN OH and TN in November. The stores are expected to close in early 2002. The company is monitoring individual store operations and may close additional locations. The company operates more than 136 Barbeques Galore stores in the United States and Australia. Hastings Entertainment (877-427-8464) is closing a Hastings Superstore location in Springfield MO. The company operates 141 stores.Tualatin Valley Builders Supply (503-598-7477) is closing a home improvement store in Gresham OR. The company operates two additional stores located in Lake Oswego and St. Helens OR. CVS Corp. (800-746-7287) is closing three of its nine drugstores in central NY during the first-quarter 2002. The stores to be closed are located at 2922 East Genesse Street in Syracuse 4090 Wetzel Road in Liverpool and 709 North Main Street in North Syracuse. The closings are part of CVS Corp.’s plan to close 200 underperforming locations nationwide. The company operates 4 100 stores. Only Deals (409-769-3686) is closing in Vidor TX. The clearance center is located at 115 West Bolivar Street. Storehouse Furniture (770-457-1176) Lynn’s Hallmark (919-467-2355) The Little Art Gallery (919-787-6317) and Lane Bryant (614-577-4000) at the North Hills Mall in Raleigh NC closed this month. Plans call for the 565 000 sq.ft. mall to be demolished and replaced by a pedestrian-friendly urban area with space for large and small retailers housing and offices.
