Who's Opening & Where

Skechers USA Inc. (310-318-3100) is increasing its presence in the children’s footwear business with the southern CA opening of its first Skechers Kids retail stores. The concept stores are located at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica CA and Brea Mall in Brea CA. Skechers USA Inc. operates more than 75 retail stores.

Starbucks Corporation (206-447-7950) is opening three Starbucks in the Washington DC metro area. The 9th Street and G Street location is 1 200 sq.ft. the 1001 Connecticut Avenue store is 1 112 sq.ft. and the store on Chain Bridge Road in McLean VA is 1 350 sq.ft. The company operates more than 4 900 stores internationally.

Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-8100) purchased 15.51 acres in San Antonio TX and plans to build its second store in that market. The property is in Sonterra Park a mixed-use project being developed by Orion Partners Inc. Costco will be one of the retail anchors for the development. The store which will be about 150 000 sq.ft. is set to open in Summer 2002. The company operates about 375 stores internationally.

Michaels Stores Inc. (800-642-4235) is relocating and opening two stores in AZ. In Scottsdale AZ the company is relocating within the Scottsdale Pavilions shopping center to a 24 449 sq.ft. space. In Prescott AZ a 14 547 sq.ft. store will open in the Prescott Gateway Mall during March 2002. Michaels Stores Inc. operates 702 Michaels arts and crafts stores in the U.S. Canada and Puerto Rico.

Fitness Formula Ltd. (312-943-4666) is opening a 20 000 sq.ft. Multiplex Club at Plaza 32 on North Halstead Street in Chicago IL. The opening is scheduled for Summer 2002 and is the seventh Multiplex Club location for the health and fitness chain.

Outback Steakhouse Inc. (813-282-1225) will open its first restaurant in New York NY during Spring 2002. The 8 000 sq.ft. restaurant will be located at 919 Third Avenue. The company operates more than 700 restaurants nationwide.

Lowe’s (336-658-4000) will not open a proposed 164 000 sq.ft. store in Pembroke MA following the plan’s rejection by the town’s zoning board of appeals.

USA Tile & Marble (972-620-0062) is opening a 3 000 sq.ft. location in the Wilson Lighting Building at 3333 Renaissance Boulevard in Bonita Springs FL next month.

Gold Violin (434-923-3277) a Web and print cataloger of speciality products for seniors opened its first retail store in Charlottesville VA. The company is working to identify future retail sites citing AZ and FL as possible areas for growth.

GolfTec Inc. (303-779-9900) plans to open 25 GolfTec indoor golf learning centers during the next three years. The expansion is the result of a multimillion dollar financing agreement with a partnership led by The Gart Companies. Five learning center openings are planned for this year in Denver CO Chicago IL Dallas TX and Atlanta GA. Plans call for 20 openings in 2003. The company currently operates nine retail locations.

Frugal Fannie’s (888-378-4257) G Street Fabrics (301-231-8998) and Sun & Ski (281-340-5000) will be opening stores in Potamac Mills in Woodbridge VA. The stores will be opening in space vacated due to Ikea relocating from inside the mall to a 300 000 sq.ft. pad site at the mall.

Cricket Communications (866-274-2538) opened two stores in NY last month. The stores in DeWitt and Clay are the cellular phone company’s first in NY. The company which operates 34 stores expects to expand its NY operations to Buffalo in the first quarter of 2002 and is considering other sites in upstate NY.

The Home Depot Inc. (770-433-8211) plans to open 200 stores annually during the next three years. In fiscal 2002 which ends in January 2003 the company expects to open 184 Home Depot stores 10 specialty Expo Design Centers four Home Depot Pro stores and two Home Depot Urban stores. The company will open its first urban neighborhood store in Chicago IL by early 2003. The four-story store will have 91 000 sq.ft. of retail space on two floors and 91 000 sq.ft. of indoor and outdoor parking on the third and fourth floors. In addition the company is opening a 120 000 sq.ft. store and garden center in Greenville NC during May. Construction of the store located at the intersection of NC 11 and Thomas Langston Road began in December. Additionally a 95 000 sq.ft. Home Depot will be opened in early 2003 at the Creekside Center in Hercules CA. Also the company plans to open a 129 788 sq.ft. home improvement and garden store at Clermont Town Center on East State Road in Clermont FL. The Home Depot Inc. operates about 1 308 stores nationwide.

King Soopers (303-778-3300) is opening a 58 000 sq.ft. store to anchor a retail center that is being built at the former Stapleton International Airport in Denver CO.

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar (913-967-4000) will open at the intersection of 48th Street and Chandler Boulevard on a 50 000 sq.ft. pad site at the Foothills Corporate Park in Phoenix AZ. The restaurant is being opened by Second T&K Real Estate LLC the largest Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar franchisee in the U.S.

Wal*Mart Stores Inc. (501-273-4000) plans to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter in Los Lunas NM. Wal*Mart Stores Inc. operates more than 2 700 locations nationwide.

Fry’s Electronics Inc. (408-487-4500) is opening a 144 000 sq.ft. store during late 2002 in San Marcos CA. The company operates 19 stores in AZ CA OR and TX.

Kohl’s Corporation (262-703-7000) is opening a store at the Crossings at Fox Run in Newington MA during April 2002. The store is one of 13 that the company plans to open in April. The Newington store is one of 12 Kohl’s stores that will be housed in a building previously occupied by Bradlees. Kohl’s operates 382 stores nationwide.

Bashas’ Inc. (800-755-7292) is opening a Bashas supermarket at the Shops at Camp Lowell in Tuscon AZ its sixth in the area. The store located at the intersection of Swan Road and Camp Lowell Drive is expected to open during the third-quarter 2002. The company operates 68 Bashas 52 Food City stores and six AJ’s Fine Foods.

Frisch’s Restaurants Inc. (513-961-2660) is opening a 10 000 sq.ft. Golden Corral buffet restaurant at 6611 Miller Lane in Dayton OH during April 2002 the company’s third in the Dayton area. The company operates 13 Golden Corral restaurants in KY and OH has four under construction and is looking for additional sites in the Dayton area.

Albertson’s Inc. (208-385-6200) is opening a 57 000 sq.ft. Albertson’s grocery store with a fuel center convenience store and restaurant in Forest Grove OR. The company operates 2 492 stores nationwide.

Pathmark Stores Inc. (732-499-3000) plans to open five Pathmark supermarkets by January 2003 three of the stores currently are under construction. The company operates 141 stores in DE NJ NY and PA.
