Who's Opening & Where


Eateries, Inc. (405-705-5000) opened three Garfield’s restuarants, including locations in FL and NV during May. The company is planning to open two additional Garfield’s throughout IN by the end of the year. Eateries, Inc. owns, operates, franchises and licenses 73 restaurants under the names of Garfield’s Restaurant & Pub, Garcia’s Mexican Restaurants, Pepperoni Grill and Italian Bistro in 25 states.

O’Charley’s, Inc. (615-256-8500) opened 10 restaurants this year, including two locations in Indianapolis, IN, and one each in Mobile, AL, Atlanta, GA, Marion, IL, Fort Wayne, IN, St. Louis, MO, Gulfport, MS, Columbia, SC and Nashville, TN. The company now expects to open as many as 14 more restaurants by the end of the year. Same store sales in the first quarter for the company’s Stoney River restaurants, which includes a base of two stores, increased 0.3%. During the quarter, the company opened its fourth Stoney River restaurant in Deer Park, IL, and is scheduled to open its fifth restaurant in Louisville, KY during the third quarter. O’Charley’s, Inc. operates 169 restaurants in 14 states in the southeast and midwest.

Atlanta Bread Co. (770-432-0933) is opening six locations this year, including stores in Fullerton, CA at the Fullerton Town Center, in Las Vegas, NV at the Centennial Center, in Nashville, TN at the West End, in Lexington, KY at the Hamburg Pavillion, in Asheville, NC on Henderson Road, and in Rogers, AR at West Walnut Street. The company operates 140 locations in 23 states.

Maid-Rite Corp. (515-276-5448) plans to expand its 83-restaurant chain to more than 1,000 Maid-Rite franchisees by 2012. The company, which recently was taken over by new owners, plans to implement an aggressive expansion plan to move the chain beyond its current markets of IA, IL, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE and WI.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Inc. (888-525-2462) plans to open 25 franchised stores this year. The gourmet chocolate and confections retailer operates four company-owned stores and 199 franchised locations throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Rent-A-Center, Inc. (972-801-1100) is planning to open as many as 80 stores by the end of the year. The company operates 2,284 stores in 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. The company’s subsidiary, ColorTyme, is a national franchiser of rent-to-own stores. ColorTyme operates 338 franchised stores in 42 states, 326 of which are under the ColorTyme name and 12 stores under the Rent-A-Center name.

Wendy’s International, Inc. (614-764-3100) signed an agreement to acquire Fresh Enterprises, Inc., owner of Baja Fresh Mexican Grill for $275 million in cash. The company plans to open 210 locations throughout 18 states by the end of the year. Baja Fresh Mexican Grill currently operates and franchises 169 restaurants throughout 16 states.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open 40 Supercenters during the next several years in CA. The company operates more than 1,100 Supercenters nationwide. Wal*Mart now has 125 general merchandise stores in CA and three distribution centers. It also has 29 Sam’s Club warehouse stores in the state. The company also recently opened a 184,000 sq.ft. Supercenter in Perry, UT at 1200 Commerce Way. Across the country, the company plans to open 185 Supercenters, 50 discount stores, 20 Neighborhood Market supermarkets and 55 Sam’s Clubs this year.

Missouri Furniture (573-346-7400) is opening a 56,000 sq.ft. store in Ozark’s Marketplace at the intersection of U.S. 65 and CC-NN in Ozark, MO, with a daily traffic count of 20,819 vehicles. The store is planned for a late Summer or early Fall opening. The company operates stores in Columbia, Jefferson City, Camdenton, Sedalia and Rolla, MO.

Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) is opening a 25,000 sq.ft. store in Scottsdale, AZ at the intersection of Frank Lloyd Wright and Scottsdale Road in 2003. The store will be part of Phase II of The Promenade. The store will incorporate the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright into its architecture and will be located next to the Scottsdale Visitor’s Center and a 125-foot spire designed by Wright. The company also is opening a 19,000 sq.ft. store in Clarksville, TN at the Governor’s Square Mall by November. Borders operates over 370 domestic superstores, 23 international stores, 36 Books etc. locations and approximately 825 Waldenbooks stores.

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) has signed lease agreements to open stores in Mesa, AZ and East Point, GA. The 24,500 sq.ft. Mesa store will be located at 1758 South Val Vista Drive in Dana Park Village Square, and is slated for an October 2003 opening. The 24,000 sq.ft. East Point location will be located at the intersection of Camp Creek Parkway and Interstate 285 and is slated for a July 2003 opening. Barnes & Noble operates 591 stores in 49 states. It also operates 305 B. Dalton Bookseller stores.

Pep Boys - Manny Moe & Jack (215-430-9000) plans to open two supercenters this year.

San Francisco Roadhouse (210-341-3189) will open a 7,973 sq.ft. restaurant in Fort Worth, TX during September. The steakhouse will be located at a former El Fenix restaurant site at the 1.2 million sq.ft. Ridgmar shopping center in west Fort Worth.

Panera Bread Co. (314-633-7100) will open 14 bakery/cafes in northwest Los Angeles, CA next year. The cafes will be the company’s first in CA.

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) opened 38 stores this year and is planning another 32 openings by the end of the year. In 2003, the company plans to open 80 stores, including entries into southern CA, Phoenix, AZ and Las Vegas, NV. Kohl’s currently operates 420 stores in 32 states.

Marshalls, Inc. (508-390-1000) is opening a store at Broadcasting Square Shopping Center in Spring Township, PA by late summer. The company operates more than 575 stores in 37 states and Puerto Rico, and opened 24 stores already this spring.

Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises (212-940-4048) is opening an 80,000 sq.ft., bi-level store in Raleigh, NC at the 1.3 million sq.ft. Triangle Town Center. The store is scheduled for a Fall 2004 opening. Saks, Inc. operates 61 Saks Fifth Avenue stores, 52 Saks Off 5th Stores, and also operates 243 stores under the names Parisian, Proffitt’s, McRae’s, Younkers, Herberger’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Bergner’s and Boston Store.

Ross Stores, Inc. (510-505-4400) is leasing a 30,000 sq.ft. space at the Augusta Square shopping center on Wrightsboro Road near the Augusta Mall in Augusta, GA. The company is planning a September opening.

Chicago Pizza & Brewery, Inc. (714-848-3747) is opening four locations by the end of the year. The company operates 26 restaurants, some of which incorporate brewpubs, with 16 in southern CA and additional locations in Boulder, CO. In addition, the company operates eight restaurants in OR, four of which are Pietro’s pizzerias, and has a licensing interest in a BJ restaurant in Lahaina, HI.

Wild Oats Markets, Inc. (303-440-5220) plans to open 10 specialty supermarkets of 26,000 sq.ft. in 2003, 20 in 2004 and 25 in 2005. The company operates 103 natural food stores in 23 states and British Columbia, Canada. The company’s markets include: Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, Henry’s Marketplace, Nature’s - a Wild Oats Market, Sun Harvest and Capers Community Markets.

Ultimate Electronics, Inc. (303-412-2500) is planning to open two more stores in St. Louis, MO, including one in July and the other in September. The company also plans to open as many as 10 stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area by the end of the year.

Claire’s Stores, Inc. (954-433-3900) is opening 180 stores and the remodeling of 120 stores by the end of the year.

Canadian Tire Corp. (416-422-0303) opened four new-format stores, three of which replaced or expanded traditional stores and one of which was opened in a new market. The company now operates 451 stores, including 274 new-format locations. The company is planning to open 22 more stores by the end of the year.

Jos. A Bank Clothiers, Inc. (410-239-2700) is planning to open as many as 25 stores by the end of the year and 30 in 2003. The company, which is one of the nation’s leading retailers of men’s clasically-styled tailored and casual clothing, footwear and accessories, operates 137 stores in 29 states.

Fresh Brands, Inc. (920-457-4433) is planning to open supermarkets in Kenosha, Oostburg, Waunakee, Mosinee, Bend, Omro, Union Grove and Howard, WI by the end of the year. The company is a supermarket retailer and grocery wholesaler through corporate-owned retail, franchised and independent supermarkets. The corporate-owned and franchised retail supermarkets currently operate under the Piggly Wiggly and Dick’s Supermarkets. brands. Fresh Brands currently has 72 franchised supermarkets, 27 corporate-owned stores, three distribution centers and centralized baker/deli production facility. Stores are located throughout northern IL and WI.

Finish Line, Inc. (317-899-1022) is planning to open 30 stores, and will remodel as many as 20 stores by the end of the year. The company is a specialty retailer of men’s, women’s and children’s brand-name athletic, outdoor and lifestyle footwear, activewear and accessories. Finish Line stores average approximately 6,001 sq.ft. and are primarily located in enclosed malls nationwide.
