Who's Opening & Where Best Buy (952-947-2000) and Staples (508-253-5000) are opening stores at the Milestone Center in Germantown, PA. The 60,000 sq.ft. Best Buy will occupy the space of a former Homeplace store. Staples, which already operates 11 stores throughout Montgomery County, is slated for an October opening in a space formerly occupied by Today’s Man. Best Buy also is planning to open a store off Lorna Road at the Riverchase Village in Birmingham, AL. The 51,763 sq.ft. site formerly was occupied by Service Merchandise. Best Buy currently operates one other store in Birmingham. The company plans to open 60 stores per year through 2004. Half of the stores are expected to be 30,000 sq.ft. and located in areas with a population of 250,000 or more.Nordstrom (206-628-2111) will open a store in Orlando, FL this October, followed by additional stores in Coral Gables and Wellington Green, FL in Palm Beach County. The company opened its first FL store during September at the International Plaza in Orlando. Bed Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) will open a store at the Primrose Marketplace in Springfield, MO. The 30,000 sq.ft. store is slated for a Fall opening. Cotenants include Best Buy, PetsMart and OfficeMax. Area tenants include Pier 1 Imports. The company also plans to open a 21,000 sq.ft. store at 3555 Indiana 38 East in Lafayette, IN at the former Frank’s Nursery. The store is slated for an October opening. The company operates more than 400 stores nationwide. Target (612-370-6948) is planning to open 114 stores this year, including locations at the Great Northern Mall in Clay, NY and at the Pyramid Mall outside of Ithaca, NY in October. The company also is planning three stores in Raleigh, NC and locations in Garner and Durham, NC. The company currently operates 1,409 stores in 47 states. Applebee’s (913-967-4000) is planning to open 100 restaurants annually during the next three to five years. Wendy’s (614-764-3100) will open a restaurant in Mitchell, IN at the intersection of IN 60 and 37. The site formerly was occupied by Bow Kay Flower Shop and the former Babe Redding property. CKE Restaurants, Inc. (805-898-8408) is opening as many as 45 Carl’s Jr. company-owned and franchised restaurants, 30 Hardee’s company and franchised restaurants, 10 La Salsa restaurants and one Timber Lodge restaurant. Galyan’s (888-425-9267) is planning to open an 80,000 sq.ft. store at the Glen Town Center on the grounds of the former Glenview Naval Air Station in Chicago, IL. The store will feature an open-air atmosphere and interactive elements, including a 40-foot rock-climbing wall. Cotenants of the center include Crown Theaters and Von Maur. The Glen, a 1,100-acre residential and commercial redevelopment project in Glenview is slated to open in September 2003. Galyan’s also plans to open an 84,000 sq.ft., two-level, store at Stony Point Fashion Park in Richmond, VA. The store will cotenant with a 204,000 sq.ft. Dillard’s and an 80,000 sq.ft. Saks Fifth Avenue. A September 2003 opening is slated.The Home Depot (770-433-8211) is planning to open a store at the Valparaiso Marketplace in Valparaiso, IL. The store will co-anchor with Kohl’s and Target. The Home Depot store will be located across the street from a Menards home improvement store. The company operates 1,400 stores in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico.Total Entertainment Restaurant Corp. (316-634-0505) is planning to open as many as 12 restaurants this year. During the second quarter, the company opened two restaurants in Westminster, CO and Richmond, VA. The company also has four restaurants under construction, while leases have been executed on two additional sites. Kohl’s (262-703-7000) is opening an 88,408 sq.ft. store at Barn Plaza in Doylestown, PA next Spring. Part of the store will be built on a 56,364 sq.ft. site formerly occupied by an Acme supermarket. Barn Plaza, which is nearly 100% occupied, is cotenanted by Marshalls, a 14-screen Regal Cinema, Eckerd, Applebee’s and Friendly’s. Kohl’s operates 420 stores in 32 states. Subway (203-877-4281) plans to open 65 new shops in the Sacramento, CA area over the next five years. The company is negotiating leases for 10 locations this year. Subway now operates 126 units in northern CA and Reno, NV and plans to open another 85 stores in those two regions. Tractor Supply Co. (615-366-4600) is planning to open as many as 115 stores this year. Lowe’s Companies (336-658-4000) is planning to open 123 home improvement stores, including nine relocations of older stores. The planned expansion is expected to increase the company’s square footage by 18%. About 4% of the sites will be leased and 96% will be owned. Stage Stores, Inc. (800-324-3244) plans to open 11 stores this year. The company hopes to double its expansion rate in 2003 and keep that pace for another five years. GAP, Inc. (650-952-4400) is opening as many as 120 stores for the fiscal year 2002, including as many as 25 Gap domestic, 15 Gap international, 20 Banana Republic and 60 Old Navy stores. The company expects the net square footage to grow around 3% with about 75% of the growth occuring in the first and second quarters. OfficeMax (216-471-3441) is planning to open as many as 13 domestic superstores during the remainder of the fiscal year 2002. The company’s joint venture in Mexico is planning to open as many as six superstores during the remainder of the year. Albertson’s (208-385-6200) is planning to build a supermarket at the intersection of Tulane Avenue and South Jefferson Davis Parkway in Central City, LA. The plans originally called for a 66,000 sq.ft. Albertson’s, but it could be reduced to 38,000 sq.ft. The company also plans to open stores throughout southern CA during the next three years. The company operates 2,300 stores nationwide. CVS Corp. (401-765-1500) is planning to open its first Jacksonville, FL pharmacy at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Arlington Road. The store will be 10,880 sq.ft. on a land area of 1.37 acres. The company operates 4,200 stores in 31 states. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-726-8917) is planning to open a 5,500 sq.ft. store at the 350,000 sq.ft. Eastgate Shopping Center in Hempfield Township, PA. The company also plans to open 15 other stores from State College, PA to the OH state line. The company operates 226 locations in 34 states and Canada. Super Stop & Shop (781-380-8000) is planning to open a store at the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers, MA. Cotenants of the mall will include Bed Bath & Beyond and Kohl’s. Area competition includes a DeMoulas Market Basket located in the Endicott Plaza and Shaw’s located in Peabody. The Super Stop & Shop will occupy part of the space formerly occupied by a 111,700 sq.ft. Ann & Hope store. Wal*Mart (650-837-5000) will open a 150,000 sq.ft. store at Harbor Gateway in Harbor City, CA next summer at a site formerly occupied by AutoNation. Area tenants include Kmart and Target. The company already operates stores in Lakewood and Paramount, CA and is planning to open a location at Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles, CA. The company operates 125 Wal*Mart stores and 29 Sam’s Club stores in CA. |
