Who's Opening & Where


Del Taco, Inc. (949-462-9300) plans to open 50 quick-serve Mexican restaurants in the Seattle, WA area during the next five years. The company is seeking local, multi-unit operators to become franchisees for the chain. Also, the company has entered an agreement with a franchisee to build 14 restaurants in CA. About 400 Del Taco locations operate in eight states, with most located in the western U.S.

McDonald’s Corp. (630-623-3000) opened its first "town center" restaurant at Easton Town Center in Columbus, OH last month. The 11,500 sq.ft. restaurant features an interactive miniature drive-thru for kids, a park for picnics, a karaoke booth, game tables and an eating area for adults. If the Columbus location is successful, the company plans to open more "town center" restaurants. The company operates more than 30,000 restaurants in 121 countries.

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) is opening a 24,000 sq.ft. store at Somerset Shopping Center in Bridgewater, NJ during October. The company operates more than 590 bookstores nationwide.

Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (817-878-8000) plans to open more than 100 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada this year. The openings will bring the company’s total number of stores to more than 1,000.

Steve Madden, Ltd. (718-446-1800) plans to open 10 shoe stores this year. The company operates about 75 company-owned Steve Madden stores.

Brookstone Inc. (603-880-9500) plans to open 15 stores, including five airport locations and one Gardeners Eden store, during fiscal 2002, which ends in February 2003. Most of the store openings are expected to occur during the second half of the fiscal year. The company also plans to operate about 65 seasonal stores during the Winter holiday season of fiscal 2002. Brookstone Inc. operates 225 stores in the U.S.

Candie’s, Inc. (914-769-8600) plans to open 10 stores offering accesories and shoes during fiscal 2003, which ends in January 2003. The company operates 13 retail stores, consisting of five outlets and eight specialty stores.

Rent-A-Center, Inc. (972-801-1205) plans to add 5% to 10% to its store base by opening 60 to 80 locations this year. In addition, the company plans to accelerate the number of new store openings each year beginning in 2003 to between 100 to 120 new locations. The company operates 2,293 rent-to-own stores nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

One Price Clothing Stores, Inc. (864-433-8888) plans to open six stores during fiscal 2002, which ends in February 2003. The company also plans to increase the number of its BestPrice! Kids concept stores. In addition, the company will test its tri-box store concept during the Spring. The locations will consist of three separate stores in a single store, including misses and junior apparel, as well as accessories. The off-price retailer of apparel and accessories for women and children operates 623 stores in 30 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as One Price & More, BestPrice! Fashions, BestPrice! Kids and BestPrice! Plus.

Target Corp. (612-370-6948) may open a store on 17 acres on RM 2222 in Austin, TX. The parcel is part of the planned Four Points Centre, which is located adjacent to an HEB supermarket. The company operates more than 1,050 stores in 47 states.

Pathmark Stores, Inc. (732-499-3000) plans to open six stores during fiscal 2002, which ends in February 2003. The company operates 141 supermarkets in metro areas of NY, NJ and Philadelphia, PA.

Shake’s Frozen Custard, Inc. (501-587-9115) has 30 Shake’s Frozen Custard stores under construction or development. The company operates 28 locations in AR, FL, KS, MO, OK, TN and TX, and expects the number of franchises to double in the next year. Expansion plans target markets in the southwest, Mexico and Canada.

Tuesday Morning Corp. (972-387-3562) plans to open its first Tuesday Morning store in upstate NY at Transitown Plaza in Clarence during August. The store will open at a former Odds’ N’ Ends location. The retailer of discounted, upscale home accessories and gifts operates about 500 stores across the U.S.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (415-421-7900) plans to open about 56 stores this year, including 25 Pottery Barn Kids stores, 18 Williams-Sonoma stores, 14 Pottery Barn stores and two outlet stores. Also included in the openings are three stores in Toronto, Canada. The company operates more than 400 retail stores, trading as Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Bed+Bath, Pottery Barn Kids, Hold Everything and Chambers.

Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (908-688-0888) plans to open a 31,500 sq.ft. store at a former Kmart location at 128 Browns Valley Parkway in Vacaville, CA. The opening is part of the company’s previously announced plan to open 80 stores this year. The company operates more than 400 locations nationwide.

Main Street and Main Inc. (602-852-9000) plan to open nine restaurants this year. The openings will include one T.G.I. Friday’s location, one Redfish location and seven The Bamboo Club locations. All the openings, except one The Bamboo Club location, will be outside the Phoenix, AZ market. Main Street and Main operates 61 T.G.I. Friday’s, five Redfish restaurants, and six The Bamboo Club locations.

Nash Finch Co. (952-832-0534) plans to open 10 Avanza supermarkets during 2002. The supermarkets serve Hispanic markets. A location in Denver, CO opened last month. The company operates 112 retail stores, principally supermarkets under the Avanza, BuyNSave, Econofoods, Sun Mart, and Family Thrift Center trade names.

The Gymboree Corp. (650-579-0600) plans to open 20 domestic and international stores this year. In addition, the company plans to test its Janie and Jack concept with 10 openings during the Fall. The company operates 580 Gymboree stores in the U.S., Canada and Europe, and 25 company-owned and 459 franchised Gymboree’s Play & Music centers.

Avado Brands, Inc. (706-342-4552) plans to open six restaurants this year, including three Don Pablo’s Mexican Kitchen locations and three Hops restaurants. The full-service, casual dining restaurant company operates 131 Don Pablo’s Mexican Kitchen restaurants, 74 Hops and 14 Canyon Cafe restaurants.

Pickups Plus, Inc. (513-398-4344) entered into a franchise agreement to open a franchise store in the Houston, TX market. A location is expected to open this Summer. The retailer of aftermarket accessories for pickup trucks and SUVs operates three company-owned stores and franchises seven stores.
