Who's Opening & Where

Caribou Coffee Company (612-359-2700) plans to open a location in St. Paul, MN this month. The coffee shop chain operates 170 stores in the midwest and southeast.

Supervalu Inc. (952-828-4000) expects to open 100 Save-A-Lot locations annually. The company opened its 1,000th Save-A-Lot grocery store in Waterbury, CT last month. In addition, the company plans to acquire Deal$-Nothing Over a Dollar, LLC, a 45-store general merchandise retailer.

Zaxby’s Chicken Fingers and Buffalo Wings (706-353-8107) is opening a restaurant in Ocala, FL during the second quarter of 2002. The company operates 109 locations throughout AL, FL, GA, KY, NC, SC and TN.

Movie Gallery Inc. (334-677-2108) plans to open 125 stores during 2002. The company owns or franchises more than 1,400 video stores in 41 U.S. states and Canada.

Just For Feet (845-727-6500) opened a 14,000 sq.ft. store in Birmingham, AL last month. The company is opening 10 stores this year and has 15 openings slated for 2003. The retailer of athletic shoes operates 90 superstores in the U.S.

Sweetberries, Inc. (941-750-6771) is expected to open a location in Sarasota, FL during October. The frozen custard chain is looking to expand by franchising locations throughout the southeast and western U.S. The company operates one location in Brandenton, FL.

Fred’s Inc. (901-362-3733) plans to increase its store count from 392 to 750 during the next few years. The retailer of discount general merchandise operates stores throughout the southeastern U.S.

Viking Culinary Arts Center (800-640-7533) plans to open a 6,500 sq.ft. store at Brookwood Place in Atlanta, GA. Viking Culinary Arts Center is composed of three themes: a theater-style demonstration area, a participation cooking school and a retail store with professional kitchen tools. The company operates two locations in Frankin and Memphis, TN.

Pizza Schmizza (503-726-0777) plans to open one store a month through 2002. The company operates 11 locations throughout OR. The new stores will include the company’s first franchised locations.

Outback Steakhouse, Inc. (813-282-1225) plans to open a location on an outparcel at Harundale Plaza in Glen Burnie, MD. The company operates 739 Outback Steakhouses in the U.S.

New World Restaurant Group, Inc. (303-568-8126) plans to open 16 licensed Einstein Bros units by the end of this year, bringing the number of licensed stores to 30. The bagel shops average about 2,200 sq.ft., however, the licensed units are about 800 sq.ft. The company primarily operates stores under the Einstein Bros and Noah’s New York Bagels brands and primarily franchises stores under the Manhattan Bagel and Chesapeake Bagel Bakery brands. The company operates 457 company-owned stores and franchises or licenses 293 stores.

CiCi’s Pizza (972-745-4200) plans to open up to 100 CiCi’s Pizza restaurants in CO during the next 10 years. These openings are part of the company’s plans to open 50 units annually during the next three years. The restaurants, featuring an all-you-can-eat pizza, pasta and salad buffet, operate in AL, AR, FL, GA, IN, KS, KY, LA, MO, MS, NC, NM, OH, OK, SC, TN. TX and VA. The company operates more than 375 units.

Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) plans to open a 13,000 sq.ft. drug store at The Shops of State Place, the 65,000 sq.ft. retail component of State Place, a mixed-use residential and retail complex that is under development in Chicago, IL. The company operates more than 3,600 Walgreens locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is opening an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar location through a franchisee, The Rose Group. The restaurant will be located on East MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township, PA. The franchisee operates 35 of the more than 1,400 Applebee’s nationwide.

Panera Bread (314-633-7100) plans to open two stores in Wichita, KS during the next 10 months through its Wichita franchisee, Original Bread Inc. Stores will be opened at 352 South West Street this Summer and at College Hill Square during February 2003. More than 400 Panera Bread locations operate in the U.S., 14 of which are operated by Original Bread Inc.

Brusters Old Fashioned Ice Cream and Yogurt (724-774-4250) is opening a location on an outparcel at Harundale Plaza in Glen Burnie, MD. The company’s expansion plans include opening locations in FL, GA, MD, NC, NH, NJ, OH, PA, SC, TN and VA. The company operates throughout FL, IN, GA, NC, NY, OH, PA, SC, VA and WV.

Christopher & Banks, Inc. (763-551-5000) is opening a store at Champlain Centres North in Plattsburgh, NY. The company operates 13 stores in NY and more than 300 stores throughout the northern half of the U.S.

MaggieMoo’s International, LLC (410-309-6001) plans to open 55 MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream and Treatery stores this year, including three in Baltimore County, MD. Long-term plans include doubling the number of the company’s stores annually. The company operates more than 55 stores in AZ, CA, CO, GA, IA, IN, KS, LA, MD, MO, NC, NJ, NV, OH, SC, TN, TX, UT and VA.

Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is opening a Borders location at Champlain Centres North in Plattsburgh, NY during July. The store will be located in space formerly occupied by Toys "R" Us. The company operates more than 350 Borders nationwide.

The Pet Pantry International, Inc. (775-841-9722) plans to open 70 to 80 stores nationwide and internationally by the end of the year. The pet food and supply delivery chain operates 44 franchise locations nationwide.

Spector’s Men’s & Women’s (518-434-0187) is opening a 7,000 sq.ft. location at Colonie Center Mall in Albany, NY during October. The location is replacing the company’s 18,000 sq.ft. store at 233 Central Avenue in Albany.

Dots, Inc. (440-349-7900) plans to open three locations in Indianapolis, IN. Stores are slated to open at Speedway Supercenter, Lafayette Square Mall and College Park. The off-price retailer operates stores throughout CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, TX, VA and WI.

Main Street and Main Inc. (602-852-9000) is opening a 7,332 sq.ft. The Bamboo Club restaurant at Sundance Square in Fort Worth, TX. The company operates three The Bamboo Club locations in AZ and two in FL. The company also plans to open locations in Newport, KY; Detroit, MI; Raleigh, NC; San Antonio, TX and Fairfax, VA. The Asian concept restaurant is expected to open during the fourth quarter of 2002.

Restaurant Development Group (312-755-0990) is opening a Bar Louie at Newport on the Levee in Cincinnati, OH this Fall. The neighborhood restaurant and bar specializes in oversized sandwiches and jumbo martinis. The Cincinnati location will be the restaurant chain’s 18th __ 13 are open or under construction in Chicago, IL, two operate in Pittsburgh, PA and two operate in AZ.

McAlister’s Deli (601-952-1100) plans to open a 2,500 sq.ft. restaurant on South Sixth Street in Waco, TX through its franchisee, Saxton-Pierce Restaurant Corp. The upscale, casual restaurant will open during June at a former Raymond’s and Wimpy’s location. The company operates 82 stores in 15 states.
