Who's Opening & Where


U.S. Factory Outlets (212-563-3650) is opening an anchor store in Bradley Commons, a 130,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 11 and Stuart Road in Cleveland, TN. Opening is slated for November. The company currently operates 29 stores in 16 states. Cotenants include a 50,000 sq.ft. Hobby Lobby and a 29,000 sq.ft. Food Lion supermarket.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a 113,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart store at 680 Connecticut Avenue in Stamford, CT. The site formerly was occupied by Bradlees. Area retailers include a proposed 29,000 sq.ft. HomeGoods store, Klaff’s decorative hardware, two Linens ‘n Things stores, a Bed Bath & Beyond and Avrick Furniture.

Good Times Burgers & Frozen Custard (303-333-1402) is opening a restaurant at 2301 North Avenue in Grand Junction, CO. The company currently operates 35 locations in the Front Range area of CO, in Denver, Grand Junction and Winter Park and one in Boise, ID. The company plans to open more than 55 locations in CO during the next few years.

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) is planning to open a Barnes & Noble store at Deerbrook Mall in Houston, TX. The 25,000 sq.ft. store is slated for a July 2003 opening.

Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. (800-377-7656) is planning to open 25 Polo Ralph Lauren stores next year. At the end of the quarter, the company operated 237 stores, including 39 Polo Ralph Lauren stores, 54 Club Monaco stores, 93 full-line outlet stores, 22 Polo Jeans Co. Outlet stores, 19 European Outlet stores and 10 Club Monaco outlet stores.

Ethan Allen Interiors, Inc. (203-743-8000) is planning to open 12 to 15 Ethan Allen stores by June 2003. The home furnishings chain also is planning to open a second store in the United Kingdom in October and three stores in China later this year. The company also recently completed the purchase of seven stores in Canada. Ethan Allen operates 323 stores.

Ultimate Electronics, Inc. (303-412-2500) is planning to open six Ultimate Electronics stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area. The company currently operates more than 50 stores in 12 states.

Village Tavern (336-724-0102) is planning to open a restaurant at The Summit shopping center in Birmingham, AL this December. The 7,500 sq.ft. restaurant will be located near Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Saks Fifth Avenue in Phase III of the 800,000 sq.ft. center. Village Tavern currently operates seven locations in AZ, CO, GA and NC. The Birmingham location is the only opening planned for this year.

Buckhead Brewery & Grill (770-957-1664) is opening a restaurant in Peachtree City, GA at the Lexington Square center by the end of the year. The company currently operates three other locations in metro Atlanta, including restaurants in Cumming, Alpharetta and Stockbridge, GA. Buckhead Brewery & Grill has a fourth location in Tallahassee, FL and plans to open more Atlanta locations and a unit in Charlotte, NC by the end of 2003.

Checkers Drive-In Restaurants, Inc. (813-283-7000) is planning to open 20 Checkers Drive-In Restaurants locations. The company currently operates and franchises 406 Checkers restaurants and 388 Rally’s locations.

Crispers (863-701-7459) is planning to open a restaurant in the Ranch Lakes Plaza center located at the intersection of State Road 70 and 87th Street East in East Manatee, FL. The restaurant is slated to open in December. The company plans to open seven restaurants this year and add 10 more in 2003. The company currently operates 14 locations in 11 FL cities, including Bartow, Bonita Springs, Clermont, Lakeland, Longwood, Naples, Orlando, Sarasota, Tampa, Winter Haven and Winter Park.

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-391-8400) is planning to open as many as 20 Whole Foods stores this year, including an 80,000 sq.ft. flagship store in Austin, TX. That location would be across the street from the company’s current store at Sixth Street and Lamar Boulevard. Whole Foods Market, Inc. currently operates 130 stores in 23 states. In the long term, the company intends to triple its store base to 400 locations by 2010.

Obee’s Franchise Systems, Inc. (866-623-3462) is planning to open 12 Obee’s sub shops this year in the Cincinnati, OH market and 40 by the end of 2006. The company currently operates 21 locations and has another 25 under construction in 14 states.

Food Markets Northwest (206-923-0740) is planning to open a supermarket at the Dash Point Village Shopping Center located at the intersection of Dash Point Road and 312th Street in Seattle, WA. The 19,000 sq.ft. site will be expanded to 33,000 sq.ft. Construction will begin in mid-October, with completion slated for Spring 2003. By 2007, Food Markets Northwest plans to be operating six locations.

Lifestyle Ventures of Memphis (901-527-5005) and San Antonio Spurs center Tim Duncan are planning to open Tim Duncan’s Island Sports Cafe, a Caribbean-themed restaurant in Winston-Salem, NC. The 7,000 sq.ft. restaurant will be located in a two-year-old, 13-store office building. The restaurant also will include a sports cafe and retail center selling Tim Duncan memorabilia. Construction is expected to begin in October, with completion slated for Spring 2003.

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) is planning to open 1,200 Starbucks coffee shops in 2003. The company plans to accelerate growth by raising its long-term store target to 25,000 locations. Starbucks currently operates 5,608 shops in 28 countries, including 4,389 in North America. The company is opening more than 1,000 stores a year and plans to expand to reach 10,000 stores in 60 countries by fiscal 2005.

Life Time Fitness (952-947-0000) is planning to open a location at Gilbert Town Center in Gilbert, AZ. The 110,000 sq.ft. upscale fitness center will be located at the intersection of Gilbert and Warner Roads and will be the company’s second location in AZ. The company also is planning to open a site in Tempe, AZ. Life Time Fitness operates 26 centers in MN and six locations in AZ, IL, IN, MI, OH, and Washington, DC.

National Beauty Corp. (954-717-8680) is planning to open 150 Hair Max stores nationwide.

Dylan’s Candy Bar (646-735-0078) is planning to open a location in either Los Angeles, CA or southern FL. The second store will most likely be more than 10,000 sq.ft. and will replicate the company’s New York, NY store. Further expansion plans are targeting malls and department stores for 4,000 sq.ft. locations by the first half of 2003.

McCormick & Schmick Management Group (503-226-3440) is planning to open an 8,000 sq.ft. McCormick & Schmick Seafood Restaurant at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA.
