Who's Opening & Where Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) is planning to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at the Southmont Center located at the intersection of Hope Avenue and Freemansburg Avenue in Bethlehem, PA. Opening is slated for April 2005. The store includes a cafe. The company also is planning to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store in the Hulen Shopping Center located at the intersection of Hulen Street and Overton Ridge Boulevard in Fort Worth, TX. When that store opens, the Barnes & Noble at 4801 South Hulen Street will close. The company operates 634 Barnes & Noble bookstores throughout 49 states. It also operates 234 B. Dalton Bookseller stores, primarily in regional shopping malls.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open SuperTarget stores at the intersection of 21st and Maize near NewMarket Square and at the intersection of 21st and Greenwich in the Wichita, KS market. Typical SuperTarget stores occupy spaces of 175,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 106 SuperTarget locations nationwide.
Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe (918-488-9727) is planning to open a location in Arlington, VA this month. The company also is looking to open stores in Herndon, Reston and Fairfax, VA, as well as Washington, DC during 2004. Next year, the company is planning an aggressive expansion into Washington, DC and northern VA with about 40 locations. The cafes range in size from 2,500 sq.ft. to 3,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 26 cafes in CO, KS, NC, OK, SD, TN and TX. Approximately 16 stores are expected to open by year’s end. Camille’s plans to be operating 125 stores by the end of 2004.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries (703-751-6844) opened a location in Herndon, VA. The 2,000 sq.ft. restaurant is the chain’s second franchise location. The company currently operates five other corporate locations in the area.
McCormick & Schmick’s (503-226-3440) is planning to open a restaurant at the intersection of 20th Street and Crystal Drive in Crystal City, VA. The 7,000 sq.ft. restaurant is slated to open during Fall 2004.
CVS Corp. (401-765-1500) is planning to open a 13,000 sq.ft. CVS pharmacy with a drive-thru at the intersection of Rosecrans and Inglewood Avenues in Hawthorne, CA. Opening is slated during 2005. The company currently operates 4,100 stores nationwide.
The Steak N Shake Co. (317-633-4100) is planning to open 15 to 20 restaurants, of which several will be franchised locations, during fiscal 2004. The company currently operates 410 locations nationwide.
Federated Department Stores, Inc. (513-579-7315) is planning to open a Bloomingdale’s store in downtown San Francisco, CA. The store will occupy a space of 337,000 sq.ft. at Westfield San Francisco Centre, encompassing five levels. The store will be second in size to the flagship Bloomingdale’s at the intersection of 59th and Lexington in New York, NY. The store is slated for a Fall 2006 opening. Bloomingdale’s currently operates 34 stores throughout 12 states. Federated currently operates approximately 450 stores throughout 34 states under the names of Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bon-Macy’s, Burdines, Goldsmith’s-Macy’s, Lazarus-Macy’s and Rich’s-Macy’s.
Regal Entertainment Group (865-922-1123) is planning to open a 60,000 sq.ft. Regal Cinemas at the Camp Hill Mall located at the intersection of Route 11/15 and Route 581 in Camp Hill, PA. The theater will be built at the location of the present Giant Food store and a portion of the existing mall. Regal Entertainment Group also operates United Artists, Edwards and Hoyts Theaters. The Regal Group cinemas include 6,119 screens in 532 theaters throughout 39 states.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open stores in Lancaster and Amherst, NY. The company also is planning to open a 165,000 sq.ft. store on Southeast 82nd Avenue in Clackamas, OR.
Publix Supermarkets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is planning to open two Pix convenience stores in Casselberry and Spring Hill, FL. The stores will be built where Publix supermarkets are already located. The Polk County stores are 1,200 sq.ft. kiosks with gas pumps on each side of a small store area. The other stores are 4,000 sq.ft. Two of the planned Pix stores will feature 160 sq.ft. buildings where customers can pay for gas through their window.
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-391-8400) is planning to open three stores along the East Coast during 2004 and 2005. A 48,000 sq.ft. store will open during the Fall 2004 in Middletown, NJ; a 40,000 sq.ft. supermarket will open during Summer 2005 in West Hartford, CT; and a 46,000 sq.ft. store will open during the Summer 2005 in Brooklyn, NY. The company currently operates 145 stores nationwide and in Canada.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open stores in Lancaster and Amherst, NY. Kohl’s has nearly 46 acres under contract in Lancaster. The company also is building stores in Orchard Park as part of the Quaker Crossing Plaza and on Niagara Falls Boulevard near Robinson Road in Amherst.
Dollar Tree (757-321-5000) is planning to open an 18,000 sq.ft. store at Merrimac Plaza, a 170,000 sq.ft. center located a quarter mile from Interstate 93 in Methuen, MA. The center is anchored by Market Basket and A.J. Wright and is tenanted by Brooks Pharmacy, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, Papa Gino’s, Dots and Payless Shoes.
Granite City Food & Brewery (952-525-2030) recently opened a restaurant in Cedar Rapids, IA. The company also is planning to open locations in Davenport, IA during January, in Lincoln, NE during March and in Maple Grove, MN during June. The company currently operates four Granite City Food & Brewery casual dining restaurants featuring made-from-scratch food and handcrafted beers.
Sport Clips (512-848-6767) is planning to enter four new states next year and double its retail space. The company has been opening stores at a rate of two per week. This year, the company is expecting to open 80 to 100 stores and break into new territories, including AL, FL, NV and TN. The company caters to the male market by offering haircuts in a sports-themed environment. The salons also feature televisions continually playing sports events and has memorabilia on display and for sale, as well as stylists wearing athletic attire.
Pure Foods (310-285-3651) is planning to open a chain of retail stores specializing in low-carb, low-fat and sugar-free items. The company is planning to open a store this month at 1820 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, CA. The store, which also includes books, vitamins and other items, will stock products for the Atkins, Zone, South Beach and Slim Fast diets. The second Pure Foods store is slated to open during January at 350 North Canon Drive in Beverly Hills, CA.
ShopKo Stores, Inc. (920-429-4132) is planning to open three ShopKo Express Rx stores, remodel 10 ShopKo locations, 22 ShopKo Pharmacy locations and 50 Pamida stores. The company also is planning to open three Pamida stores and 16 Pamida pharmacies. The company currently operates 361 stores throughout 23 states in the Midwest, western mountain region and Pacific Northwest.
