McDonald’s Corp. (630-623-3000) is planning to close 719 under-performing restaurants, primarily in the U.S. and Japan, including 202 that were shuttered in the fourth quarter. Overall, the company is still planning to open 850 traditional McDonald’s restaurants, 380 of its smaller "satellite" facilities and 150 of its other brand restaurants this year. Factoring in the planned closings and openings, the company’s openings will be down about 40% from the 392 net additions last year.

Friend’s Convenience Stores (806-765-6681) closed its stores across the south plains of TX.

JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is closing its store at the Florin Mall in Sacramento, CA during April because there’s not enough surplus merchandise to supply the store. The closure leaves Sears as the mall’s only anchor tenant. JCPenney has closed 18 stores during the past year. The company also is closing its store at Tysons Corner Center in Tysons Corner, VA during April because of declining sales.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) closed its Sam’s Club store in southwest Shreveport, LA. The company also is planning to close its store located on Cockrell Hill Road in Duncanville, TX.

Piggly Wiggly (501-570-0007) closed its store near the New River Shopping Center at 1210 Hargett Street in Jacksonville, NC because of lagging sales and competition. The company also is closing a store in Goldsboro, NC because of competition from stores like Winn-Dixie, Food Lion, Sam’s Club, Harris Teeter, IGA and Wal*Mart Supercenter.

Tower Records (916-373-3050) closed four stores last month and is continuing its withdrawal from the United Kingdom. The store closures were in Fremont, Westwood and Thousand Oaks, CA and Boston, MA. Throughout the United Kingdom, the company closed four stores last Summer and announced that the leases on two remaining London stores will be sold to rival Virgin Retail Group. The decision means the Tower brand will disappear from London within three months. The company also is mulling the future of its two stores in Ireland.

MJ Designs (800-722-2021) is closing its store in Duncanville, TX after filing for bankruptcy.

Fry’s Food (623-936-2100) closed its supermarket at 2950 West Ina Road in Tucson, AZ. The company currently operates another location a mile away at 3770 West Ina Road in Marana, AZ.

Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) closed its Sonic Drive-in restaurant at 631 North Arizona Boulevard in Coolidge, AZ.

Tennessee Sports Fan (615-514-2000) is closing two of its three Nashville, TN-area sports apparel stores and has shut down its online operations. The store at Thoroughbred Village has already closed, while the Hickory Hollow location will be shut down soon. The company will continue to operate a store at Opry Mills in Nashville. The company is now planning to open stores next summer at higher-traffic locations, including RiverGate Mall, Hickory Hollow Mall and CoolSprings Galleria.

Family Dollar Stores (704-847-6961) closed its store on Market Street in Spencer, WV because of competition. Overall, the company is planning to close about 50 stores. The company currently operates 4,600 stores.

Gap, Inc. (949-719-0829) closed its Old Navy store at Wonderland Mall located at the intersection of Plymouth and Middle Belt Roads in Wayne, MI. The mall is currently 65% occupied and is tenanted by Target, AMC Theaters, OfficeMax and Dunham’s.
