Who's Opening & Where

Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a 123,680 sq.ft. store at The Shoppes of Lakeland located on U.S. 98 in Lakeland, FL. The space was formerly occupied by an 88,000 sq.ft. Montgomery Ward. The center is tenanted by Michael Stores. The company currently operates 1,476 stores throughout 47 states, including 1,148 Target stores, 264 Mervyn’s stores and 64 Marshall Field’s stores.

Ted’s Cafe Escondido (405-848-8337) is planning to open two restaurants throughout OK. The Mexican restaurants will be located at 801 East Danforth Road in Edmond and in Oklahoma City. The first restaurant is scheduled for a mid-May opening this year, while the second is slated to open during January 2004. After the Oklahoma City opening, the company plans on opening a fourth location in Tulsa.

H-E-B Grocery (210-938-8000) is planning to open a store at the 825,000 sq.ft. San Clemente office-retail project on the west side of Loop 360 at Westlake Drive in Austin, TX. The company currently operates five other Central Market stores in Dallas, Plano, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, TX.

The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) is planning to open supermarkets and remodel and expand existing locations in central TN. About 40% of the investment is said to go towards seven or nine store openings in the area through the construction or the acquisition of existing locations.

The TJX Cos. (508-390-1000) is planning to open a 25,000 sq.ft. HomeGoods store at the Villaggio shopping center in Fresno, CA. The store will be located near Nordstrom Rack.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-726-8917) is planning to open three more locations throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area. The first will open this Summer at the site of the former Ground Round on Suburban Avenue in St. Paul, the second is opening on County Road 42 in Apple Valley and the third one is opening at Eden Prairie’s transit facility. The company also is opening a location at Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, NY. The company currently operates 249 company and franchised stores nationwide.

Buca di Beppo (612-288-2382) opened a 7,300 sq.ft. restaurant on Main Street in Exton, PA. The company also is planning to open a restaurant during the Spring in Cherry Hill, NJ. The company currently operates 91 restaurants throughout 25 states under the names Buca di Beppo and Vinny T’s of Boston.

Famous Dave’s (952-294-1300) is planning to open eight company restaurants and 20 to 22 franchised units this year. The company currently operates 40 locations and franchises an additional 33 units throughout 19 states and has signed development agreements for 118 franchised locations.

Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8000) is planning a 10% increase in the construction of new locations, the majority of which will be freestanding, as the company expands outside of malls. The company also plans on expanding throughout the south and southwest markets. Included will be more stores in MD, NJ and PA, as well as the opening of restaurants in southern CA; Phoenix, AZ and Salt Lake City, UT. The company currently operates 1,080 restaurants throughout 36 states.

IHOP Corp. (818-240-6055) is planning to open a restaurant at 900 West State Road in Orem, UT. The restaurant will be located near Wal*Mart and is slated for an August or September opening. The company currently operates 1,100 restaurants nationwide and in Canada.

Gander Mountain (952-830-8700) is planning to open a store in the Buffalo, NY market. The store, which specializes in hunting, fishing and camping gear, may open at a former Ames department store in the Youngham Plaza on Young Street. The company also is opening a store in the Rochester suburb of Henrietta, NY. Both locations will run from 75,000 sq.ft. to 105,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 57 stores throughout eight states, mainly in the midwest.

Ruddick Corp. (704-372-5404) is planning to open five Harris Teeter stores for the remainder of fiscal 2003. The company currently operates 141 supermarkets.

Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) is planning to open a restaurant on a land area of 0.81 acres located at 1014 Independence Boulevard in Virginia Beach, VA. The company is expanding throughout the southeast region.

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) is planning to open 1,200 stores this year.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a 218,653 sq.ft., three-tiered store in the Baldwin Hills area of Los Angeles, CA. The store has shopping carts that can navigate the three stories on escalator-type conveyor belts.

Atlanta Bread Co. (770-805-8469) is planning to open stores at the following locations: Spring Valley in Dallas, TX; Arrowhead Festival in Glendale, AZ; Waterford Lakes and Hunter’s Creek Center in Orlando, FL; North Main Street in Anderson, SC; Miracle Mile in Coral Gables, FL; Centennial Center in Las Vegas, NV and in Johnson City, TN; Madison, NJ; and Miamisburg, OH. The company currently operates 150 locations throughout 22 states.

U.S. Factory Outlets, Inc. (212-563-3650) signed leases to occupy two former Kmart stores. The company will open a 38,000 sq.ft. anchor store at the Hamilton Meadows Shopping Center in Hamilton, OH during June and will open a 56,000 sq.ft. location at the Hanover Mall in Hanover, PA during July. USFO offers manufacturers closeouts and other items at a discount of 40% to 75% off department store prices. The company currently operates locations throughout AR, AZ, ID, IL, IN, MA, MO, MS, ND, NM, OH, SC, TN, TX and VA.

Neiman Marcus (800-634-6267) is planning to open locations during 2005. First, the company plans on remodeling two existing stores and turning its San Francisco, CA location into a 250,000 sq.ft. flagship store with a 60,000 sq.ft. addition. The company also will tack 30,000 sq.ft. onto its Newport Beach, CA store and rework the layout of its Houston, TX store to expand the selling floor.

Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) is planning to open a store at Grand Strand, a new center under construction along U.S. 17 Bypass North near the intersection with U.S. 501 in Myrtle Beach, SC. The store will be near a Costco. Opening is slated for later this year. Overall, the company plans on opening 60 locations this year. The company currently operates 500 locations throughout 48 states.
