Who's Opening & Where


Ryan’s Family Steakhouses, Inc. (864-879-1000) opened four Ryan’s restaurants this year, including one relocation, and closed two restaurants for relocation purposes. For the remainder of the year, the company plans to open 11 to 13 restaurants, including three potential relocations. All of the restaurants will open with Ryan’s display cooking format. The format was introduced in 2000 and involves a glass-enclosed grill and cooking area that extends into the dining room. Ryan’s intends to convert approximately 30 to 40 restaurants this year.

Smith & Wollensky (212-838-2061) is planning to open a restaurant in Houston, TX. The restaurant will have 425 seats on two levels. The company also is planning to open two restaurants next year and two to three per year starting in 2005. Smith & Wollensky currently operates 15 restaurants throughout New York, NY and six other markets.

Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is planning to open a 44,300 sq.ft. Publix supermarket in Shelby County, AL. The supermarket will open at the soon-to-be constructed 70,400 sq.ft. White Stone Center located off of Alabama Highway 119. Opening is slated for March 2004. The company currently operates 740 stores throughout AL, FL, GA, SC and TN.

Sport Chalet, Inc. (818-790-2717) is planning to open two stores in northern CA, including one in Antioch and one in Sacramento. In addition to expansion into northern CA, the company will open a store in Redlands. All three stores are scheduled to open in the Fall. The company currently operates 28 locations throughout CA and southern NV.

The May Departments Stores, Inc. (314-342-6300) is planning to open a 140,000 sq.ft. Lord & Taylor store at the Oakland Mall located along 14 Mile, east of Interstate 75, in Troy, MI. The store will be located between Marshall Field’s and Sears. Opening is slated for next year. The two-story location would be the fourth outlet in the Detroit area. Other locations include Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi and Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights. Lord & Taylor operates 85 stores throughout 32 markets. The May Department Stores currently operates 445 stores throughout 37 states under the following names: Hecht’s, Strawbridge’s, Foley’s, Robinsons-May, Filene’s, Kaufmann’s, Famous-Barr and Meier & Frank.

Shoe Carnival (866-271-5862) is planning to open 27 stores this year. The company currently operates 220 stores nationwide.

Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to open a 23,000 sq.ft. Borders Books & Music store in Carlsbad, CA this October. The store will be located at the intersection of El Camino Real and Leucadia Boulevard in The Pavilion at La Costa. The company currently operates 410 Borders domestic superstores, 33 international Borders stores located primarily in the U.K. and the Pacific Rim; 37 Books etc. stores throughout Great Britain and approximately 775 Waldenbooks stores throughout malls in America.

Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open 25 stores during the second quarter. This fiscal year, the company expects to open 130 stores, reflecting a total square footage growth of approximately 15 percent. The company currently operates 875 home improvement stores throughout 45 states.

Advance Auto Parts (540-362-4911) opened 33 stores last quarter and closed 12. The company now plans to open 125 stores this year and shut down 25 under-performing locations. Advance Auto Parts currently operates 2,456 stores nationwide.

Against All Odds (201-641-3700) is planning to open an 8,000 sq.ft. store at the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, NY during mid-July. The store will be located on the upper level between Sears and The Bon-Ton in a space formerly occupied by Thunder Bay. Against All Odds is a hip-hop clothing store, which carries brands such as Iceberg, Coogi, Enyce, Ecko, Phat Farm, Sean John, Baby Phat and Azzur. The chain produces its own CD mixes and invites artists to in-store promotions and events. The company plans to open another 10 to 12 stores this year, including locations for Watertown, Kingston, Poughkeepsie in the Hudson Valley and Crossgates Mall in the Albany area. Against All Odds currently operates 22 stores, mainly throughout New York, NY and in NJ.

TBC Corp. (901-363-8030) is planning to open a Big O Tires store on 13 Mile Road in Warren, MI. The company plans to open 12 facilities in the Detroit, MI area, all in former Penske Automotive Centers adjacent or next to a Kmart. The company currently operates 550 Big O Tires stores throughout 20 states and Canada.

El Pollo Loco (949-399-2000) is planning to open locations at the intersection of Third and Broadway in Los Angeles, CA; at the intersection of Cerritos and Valley View in Cypress, CA and at 1521 North Ed Carey Drive in Harlingen, TX.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a 135,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart Supercenter on a land area of 23 acres in Prince William County, VA. Opening is slated for Summer 2004. The acquisition of the property is part of the company’s domestic expansion program, which calls for the opening of as many as 55 discount stores and as many as 210 supercenters. The company currently operates 4,700 stores, mostly in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. However, the company also operates locations in South America, Asia and Europe.

Shaw’s Supermarkets (508-378-7211) is planning to open a store on East Steeple Street in Mashpee Commons in West Bridgewater, MA. Plans call for the design of the store to be in keeping with the architecture and landscaping of Cape Cod. The company currently operates 186 Shaw’s and Star Market locations throughout six New England states.

Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) opened a full-line store in Houston, TX. For the remainder of the year, the company plans on opening three full-line stores at sites in Austin, TX; Richmond, VA and Wellington Green, FL. Two additional Rack stores are also planned. Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes, and accessories throughout nearly 90 Nordstrom stores and about 50 Nordstrom Rack stores in about 25 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and about 30 Faconnable boutiques (primarily in Europe), and it sells goods online and through catalogs.

Allied Domecq (781-961-4020) is planning to open 100 Baskin-Robbins outlets across the Northeast in tandem with sister brand Dunkin’ Donuts by the end of the Summer. Currently, there are 60 dual-branded Baskin-Robbins/Dunkin’ Donuts outlets throughout the Northeast, the majority of which are located in New England. Dunkin’ Donuts currently operates 5,400 locations worldwide, with 3,800 units in the U.S., while Baskin-Robbins currently operates 4,700 stores, with half located in the U.S. The company also operates Togo’s shops, which are located primarily on the West Coast.

Stein Mart (904-346-1500) is planning to open 14 stores this year, while shuttering 16 underperforming units. The company currently operates 270 stores throughout 30 states. Stores will open in major urban markets, including Washington, DC this July and Jacksonville, FL during the third quarter.
