Who's Opening & Where


Charming Shoppes, Inc. (215-245-9100) is planning to open 50 to 55 stores during fiscal 2004. The majority of the store openings will be in strip centers. The company currently operates 2,248 stores throughout 48 states under the names Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Catherine’s Plus Sizes and Monsoon Accessorize Ltd.

Trader Joe’s Co. (626-599-3700) is planning to open a store at the Marketplace shopping center in Santa Rosa, CA. The space was formerly occupied by Wherehouse Music.

Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) is planning to open 85 stores during 2004. Approximately 60 stores will be domestic Best Buy stores, while 25 stores will be in the 45,000 sq.ft. format and 35 in the smaller-market format. Most of the stores will be opened throughout existing markets.

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open several locations throughout AZ, including an 86,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Warner and Cooper Roads in Gilbert. The store will anchor a proposed center to be called the Shoppes at Gilbert Commons. The company also is opening a store at the intersection of Val Vista Drive and Williams Field Road in Gilbert. The company also is planning to open a store at the intersection of Newbury Road and Kelley Road in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Recreational Equipment, Inc. (800-426-4840) opened stores in Santa Rosa and Roseville, CA and Tukwila and Tacoma, WA. The company also relocated a Denver, CO area store to Boulder, CO. This year, the company plans on opening seven stores and relocating its Houston, TX store. Overall, the company operates 63 stores throughout 24 states, two online stores and an adventure travel company.

Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a store at the Addison Town Center, a 303,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Marsh Lane and Belt Line Road in Addison, TX. The store will take over space formerly occupied by Kmart. Target plans on expanding and revamping the former Kmart. Opening is slated for later this year or early 2004. The company currently operates 33 stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area, including 14 Super Target stores.

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-391-8400) is planning to open its first store in the Colorado Springs, CO area. The company expects to open the 40,000 sq.ft. store in the empty Cub Foods store at the intersection of Academy and Briargate Boulevards. The company currently operates 142 stores throughout 26 states and Canada.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter during Spring 2004 in Jackson, MI. The company also is planning to expand its current location at the West Manchester Mall into a Wal*Mart Supercenter. The company also is planning to develop a Wal*Mart Supercenter at a tract across from U.S. 60 and Barret Boulevard in Henderson, KY.

Duane Reade (212-273-5700) is planning to open as many as 22 stores this year, with a focus on the New York, NY area. The company currently operates 228 stores.

Chipotle Mexican Grill (303-595-4000) is planning to open stores throughout the Seattle, WA area during the Fall.

Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. (330-656-2600) bought three store leases in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area from MJ Designs, LP. The company expects to take over the stores during late April or early May. The stores will be remodeled, re-merchandised and reopened as Jo-Ann Superstores this year. The company plans on retaining many of the MJ Designs employees as it goes ahead with plans to open two superstores in the Dallas/Fort Worth area this year. Including the three MJ Designs stores, Jo-Ann Stores plans to open about 20 stores nationwide during the coming year. The company operates 847 Jo-Ann Farbrics and Crafts traditional stores and 72 Jo-Ann Superstores throughout 48 states.

Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open 130 Lowe’s Home Improvement stores this year, reflecting total square footage growth of 15% to 16%. The company currently operates 854 stores throughout 44 states.

YUM! Brands (502-874-8300) acquired two acres on Gratiot Avenue in Detroit, MI to relocate an existing store in the market.

JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open a store at the 900,000 sq.ft. Riverdale Village in Coon Rapids, MI. The store would consist of one or two stories.

Jack-In-The-Box, Inc. (858-571-2121) entered the fast-casual restaurant category by purchasing Qdoba Restaurant Corp., operator of the Qdoba Fresh Mexican Grill. The company plans on opening eight Quick Stuff convenience stores adjacent to Jack-In-The-Box restaurants this year. The company also plans on opening 20 Jack-In-The-Box restaurants this year. The company expects its 2003 capital expenditures to be approximately $155 million versus $181 million originally budgeted, as the company plans to lease a greater portion of its new stores rather than purchase them.

Hobby Lobby (405-745-1100) is planning to open a 50,000 sq.ft. store in High Point, NC. The store will occupy the space left vacant by Harris Teeter in the Center Stage shopping center at 1116 Eastchester Drive. The store will be the company’s first in NC. Hobby Lobby currently operates 287 stores throughout 25 states.

Diedrich Coffee, Inc. (949-260-6734) is planning to open at least 50 retail coffee outlets worldwide, primarily under the Gloria Jean’s brand. The company’s three brands are Gloria Jean’s Coffees, Diedrich Coffee and Coffee People. The company operates 406 retail outlets, the majority of which are franchised, throughout 37 states and 10 foreign countries.

Sephora USA, LLC (415-977-4300) is leaving its three-level West Coast flagship store on Stockton Street in downtown San Francisco, CA for a single-level store near the intersection of Powell and Market Streets in the city. The move will displace a souvenir shop and a McDonald’s restaurant. The relocation is expected to take place during the Summer. The company currently operates about 70 stores throughout the U.S. under the name LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA.

Fresh Enterprises (805-495-4704) is planning to open a Baja Fresh Mexican restaurant in the Annex shopping center at the intersection of Rand and Arlington Heights Roads in Arlington Heights, IL.

The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open a 102,000 sq.ft. store with a 28,000 sq.ft. garden center at the intersection of Interstate 43 and Highway 83 in Mukwonago, WI. The site also would contain three small outlots. Opening is slated for later this year.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-726-8917) is planning to open a 4,400 sq.ft. store in Tacoma, WA. The store will offer a 24-hour drive-thru service. The company currently operates more than 255 stores throughout 37 states and Canada. Overall, the company plans on opening 77 stores this year.

Movie Gallery, Inc. (334-677-2108) is planning to open 175 to 200 internally developed stores. The company expects this growth, combined with an anticipated increase in same-store sales of between 2% to 5% for this year, will drive revenues for the year to a range of $635 million to $655 million. The company also expects to produce additional growth in the store base this year as a result of continuous acquisitions of single-store operators and small chains.

Steak N Shake (317-633-4100) is planning to open 14 restaurants this year.

Spartan Stores, Inc. (616-878-2000) is planning to open a store in Cincinnati, OH during 2004. The company currently operates 156 stores, including four stores in the Toledo, OH area.

Town Sports International, Inc. (212-246-6700) is planning to open a 24,000 sq.ft. New York Sports Club at the MetLife Building at 200 Park Avenue in New York, NY. The bi-level facility is planning to open during May. The company currently operates 87 New York Sports Club locations. The fitness center will occupy space on the street and lobby levels on the east side of the building.
