Who's Opening & Where
Old Chicago (503-805-3988) opened a
restaurant at 10300 Washington Street in Portland, OR. Since its privatization
in August 1999, 22 restaurants have been added and average annual sales are
approximately $250 million. The company also began franchising its Old Chicago
concept and now has six franchises with 28 restaurants in various stages of
development.
IKEA (610-834-0180) is planning to open a 330,000 sq.ft. store on a
23-acre site at the New York shipyard property in the Red Hook section of
Brooklyn, NY. Costco currently is operating a two-story warehouse on the site.
Tommy Bahama (206-622-8688) opened a 3,710 sq.ft. store at the Manhattan
Village Shopping Center located at 3208 Sepulveda Avenue in Manhattan Beach, CA.
Area retail includes Corner Bakery, LA Food Show, Chico’s and Macy’s Men’s. Each
store creates a total entertainment and lifestyle concept shop that houses the
entire product line and Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Cafe - a full-scale restaurant.
The company operates 30 Tommy Bahama locations, with an additional 10 scheduled
to open this year.
Red, Hot & Blue (703-276-8833) is planning to open a franchised location
at the SouthSide Works on East Carson Street in Pittsburgh, PA during 2004. The
company currently operates 35 restaurants throughout 11 states.
Armstrong Garden Centers (626-914-1091) is planning to open a store at
7360 San Ramon Boulevard in Dublin, CA this month. The typical Armstrong store
is 50,000 sq.ft. The Dublin location will have 6,400 sq.ft. of indoor space and
32,000 sq.ft. of outdoor space. The company currently operates 35 centers
throughout southern CA. The company also is planning to open a location in
Novato, CA. Overall, Armstrong plans to open three to four stores per year.
Good Guys, Inc. (510-747-6000) is planning to open a location at the
intersection of Sunnyside and Fowler Avenues in Fresno, CA.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-726-8917) is planning to open 77
factory stores and 10 bakery-cafe or satellite locations this year. The company
has a long-term target of 700 factory stores.
Panera Bread (314-633-7100) is planning to open 120 stores this year. The
company grew from 183 stores in 1999 to 478 locations throughout 32 states last
year, with about 70% of the units being franchised. The company also operates
under the name St. Louis Bread Co.
Ace Cash Express (972-550-5000) is planning to open up to 500 stores
during the coming five years. The company currently operates 1,170 stores
nationwide.
The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open a store at
Walkers Brook Crossing located on Walkers Brook Drive in Reading, PA during July
2004. The company also is planning to open Landscape Supply stores in Dallas,
Grapevine, Lewisville and Plano, TX this year.
Golf Galaxy, Inc. (952-941-8848) is planning to double its store count
during the coming two to three years and expand into catalog and Internet sales.
The company currently operates 20 stores throughout the Midwest. Plans call for
the opening of six stores this year and 10 to 12 annually for several years
after that. Golf Galaxy stores typically occupy spaces of 17,000 sq.ft.
Liz Claiborne, Inc. (212-354-4900) is planning to open three Mexx stores
and six Sigrid Olsen stores nationwide this year. Five of the stores are
expected to be conversions from existing Liz Claiborne locations. The first Mexx
store is expected to be located at 650 Fifth Avenue in New York, NY. Opening is
slated for the Fall. It will showcase Mexx products in almost 11,000 sq.ft. of
selling space.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open 130 stores this
year. During the coming few years, the company is planning to open 250 stores
throughout CA.
Popcorn Indiana (800-679-6677) is planning to open a store at 1592
Broadway, in Times Square at West 48th Street in New York, NY during the Spring.
The company currently operates one other location at 76th and Broadway in NY.
McCormick & Schmick’s (503-226-3440) is planning to open a restaurant at
Congress at Fourth, a 525,000 sq.ft. retail/office tower located at the
intersection of Fourth Street and Congress Avenue in Austin, TX.
Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) expects capital expenditures of about $700
million in fiscal 2004, including the opening of approximately 80 stores
nationwide. The company currently operates 550 stores throughout 44 states.
Carvel Corp. (860-257-4448) is planning to open freestanding and inline
stores throughout NJ and eastern PA. Carvel currently operates 400 franchised
and food service locations and sells its ice cream cakes at over 5,500
supermarkets nationwide.
Planet Smoothie Franchises, LLC (504-582-2241) is planning to open Mama
Fu’s, a quick casual Asian noodle concept, across from the Piedmont Hospital in
the Buckhead section of Atlanta, GA. Mama Fu’s has pending deals for more than
30 units, including one at the Atlantic Station development in midtown Atlanta.
The company also operates nine Willy’s locations in Atlanta and 50 Moe’s
Southwest Grill locations throughout the Southeast. The company also is planning
to open 80 Moe’s locations by the end of this year. The company also is planning
to open 60 PJ’s coffee stores during the coming two years and 70 Planet Smoothie
locations. The company currently operates 130 Planet Smoothie locations
throughout 22 states.
Smarthome, Inc. (949-221-9200) opened its first home automation store
located at Millikan Avenue in Irvine, CA. The company specializes in home
automation products and personal gadgets.
Hot Topic (626-839-4681), Saladworks (610-825-3080) and Regis Salon
(952-947-7777) are planning to open locations at Lakeforest Mall in
Gaithersburg, MD.
May Department Stores (314-342-6300) is planning to open 11 stores and
remodel or expand 26 other locations this year. The company also is planning to
open 30 David’s Bridal locations.
Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. (330-656-2600) is planning to move from its Tyrone
Gardens location to a site on 66th Street in St. Petersburg, FL, which was
formerly occupied by Service Merchandise. Opening is slated for June. The super
store will be the company’s seventh in the state, including locations in
Altamonte Springs, Brandon, Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa. This
store will offer new services, such as floral design, framing and arts and
crafts classes.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 13 stores throughout AZ,
including 10 locations in the Phoenix area. The company currently operates 457
stores nationwide.
Domicile (919-932-7172) is planning to open locations in Atlanta, GA;
Philadelphia, PA; FL and NY. The company sells home furnishings, lighting, home
textiles and accents, and also offers design services. During November, the
company will open its first Washington, DC area store at The Market Place in
Clarendon, VA. Cotenants will include Cheesecake Factory and La Tasca Spanish
Tapas Bar & Restaurant.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart
Neighborhood Market in the Kansas City, KS area. The 43,000 sq.ft., $2.5 million
store is slated for a September completion. The space was formerly occupied by
Service Merchandise. The single-story market will house a grocery store, a
pharmacy and a deli-bakery. The neighborhood stores are smaller than
supermarkets and are designed to compete with convenience stores. A second store
is slated to open at 10303 Metcalf Avenue, at a site formerly occupied by
Payless Cashways.
Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) is planning to open a store in
Stamford, CT. The company signed long-term leases to occupy the two-story,
120,000 sq.ft. building located at the intersection of Broad and Summer Streets.
The site formerly was occupied by Caldor. Opening is slated for the Fall. The
company is planning to do a complete exterior and interior renovation before
occupying the space. The company currently operates approximately 330 stores
throughout 42 states.
Loehmann’s Holdings, Inc. (718-409-2000) opened stores in Troy, MI and in
East Hanover, NJ this year. The NJ store was a replacement for a smaller
location. The company also is planning to open a store in Chevy Chase, MD during
this month. Loehmann’s is a specialty retailer of designer and brand name
women’s and men’s fashion apparel, accessories and shoes at prices that are
typically 30% to 65% below department store prices. The company currently
operates 45 stores throughout 16 states.
Big Lots, Inc. (614-278-6800) is planning to open a store at 1515 Main
Street in Billings, MT. The space was formerly occupied by Osco Drug. Big Lots
will use all of the 30,600 sq.ft. when it opens during the Summer. The company
currently operates 1,300 stores throughout 45 states. The chain plans on opening
as many as 100 stores. The company has operated a store in Missoula, MT for the
past couple years. It is the company’s only location in MT. The stores sell
clothing, food items and furniture.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a store in downtown
Stamford, CT. The store would be situated on a land area of 2.7 acres. The
project will be about 100 feet in height and will contain six levels. The first
level will contain pedestrian and vehicular access points and 16,000 sq.ft. of
street level retail. Levels two through four will contain the parking.
