Who's Opening & Where Carvel Corp. (404-705-2046) granted 38 franchise licenses and opened 10 locations during the third quarter. The stores are located in Boston, MA; Midland Park, NJ; Highpoint and Raleigh, NC; Stratton, VT; and Astoria, East Northport and Staten Island, NY as well as two locations in Brooklyn, NY. In addition, the 38 recently signed locations include 12 sites in NY, four in FL, three in NJ, OH and GA, two in AZ, NC and VA and one each in LA, MO, NH, SC, TN, TX and VT. Openings are slated for the next six months. Carvel currently operates more than 440 franchised and food service locations and sells its ice cream cakes at over 6,100 supermarket outlets. Bi-Mart Corp. (541-344-0681) opened a store in Havre, MT. The location in Havre is the first of about eight locations the company plans to open in MT during the coming two years. The company also is targeting ID for further expansion. Bi-Mart operates smaller versions of big-box discount stores, filled with frequently purchased household items, hardware and clothing. The stores also have pharmacies. The company currently operates 63 stores in OR and WA. IHOP Corp. (818-240-6055) signed a multi-store development agreement with Landmark Restaurant Group, Inc. The company will develop 22 IHOP restaurants during the coming 10 years in certain areas of AZ, CA and NV. The company currently operates 1,149 restaurants throughout 48 states and Canada. Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open a Lowe’s Home Improvement Center on a land area of 61 acres in Traverse City, MI. Opening is slated for Fall 2004. The company currently operates 875 stores throughout 45 states. Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) is planning to open a store at Orange Plaza, a 900,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Route 17 and Interstate 84 in Middletown, NY with an average daily traffic count of 47,000 vehicles. Cotenants include Wal*Mart Supercenter, The Home Depot, Kohl’s Department Store, Bed Bath & Beyond, Modell’s Sporting Goods, David’s Bridal, Staples, Applebee’s and Ruby Tuesday. Burlington Coat Factory currently operates 315 stores throughout 42 states. U.S. Factory Outlets, Inc. (212-563-3650) is planning to open a 42,300 sq.ft. store at the Kokomo Mall in Kokomo, IN during March 2004. The previously occupied space is being redeveloped. The company currently operates 32 stores in 16 states, including three locations throughout IN. The 400,000 sq.ft. mall is cotenanted by JCPenney, Elder-Beerman, Goody’s Family Clothing, Deb Shop, Claire’s, Sycamore Cottage, Wells Fargo Financial and Panera Bread. In addition, Chuck E. Cheese is planning to open during April. Circuit City Stores, Inc. (804-527-4000) is planning to open a store in Hattiesburg, MS at a space formerly occupied by Service Merchandise. The company may subdivide the 50,773 sq.ft. space. Circuit City stores typically average approximately 34,500 sq.ft. Opening is slated after March 2004. The company also plans to open approximately 10 superstores, relocate about 20 superstores and remodel four by the end of its current fiscal year. The company currently operates over 600 stores nationwide. Pizza Patron (972-613-8000) is planning to open 45 stores throughout AZ by 2007. This coming year, Pizza Patron will focus on expansion in the West Valley area of AZ. The first store is scheduled to open by early next year at the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Up to five more locations are slated to open by the end of 2004. Chicago Pizza & Brewery, Inc. (714-848-3747) recently opened restaurants in Cerritos and San Jose, CA for a total of four restaurants to date. Additionally, the company has executed a lease for a BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse in San Bernardino, CA. The 8,000 sq.ft. restaurant is planned for a pad site located in The Hub project. Opening is slated for Fall 2004. The company currently operates 32 casual dining restaurants, some of which incorporate brewpubs. The company operates 21 restaurants in CA, with additional locations in Boulder, CO; Chandler, AZ and Lewisville, Clear Lake and Addison, TX. In addition, the company operates six restaurants in OR, three of which trade as Pietro’s, and has a licensing interest in a BJ’s restaurant in Lahaina, Maui, HI. Cold Stone Creamery (480-348-1704) is planning to open a location at Silverado Station, a center located at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Bandera Road in San Antonio, TX during March 2004. The company also has plans to open four additional franchises in and around the San Antonio area during 2004 and another seven by 2007. The company currently operates 490 stores throughout 40 states. Overall, Cold Stone Creamery is slated to open 450 franchised locations during 2004. In TX, the company has 11 stores with locations planned for Plano, Lubbock, Colleyville, Stafford, Corpus Christi, Pasadena and Houston. Aaron Rents, Inc. (404-231-0011) is planning to open Aaron’s Sales & Lease Ownership franchise stores in Ontario, Canada. This will mark the company’s entry into the Canadian market. The initial store in Canada will open this month in Kitchener, Ontario by a franchisee who has been awarded an area development agreement to open a total of six stores in southwest Ontario during the coming three years. The company currently operates approximately 790 company-operated and franchised stores nationwide and in Puerto Rico. The May Department Stores, Inc. (314-342-6300) is planning to open a Kaufmann’s department store in the Columbus, OH area. The company is planning to acquire the 224,000 sq.ft. Marshall Field’s store at the Mall at Tuttle Crossing and the 198,000 sq.ft. Marshall Field’s store at Columbus City Center. The company currently operates approximately 445 department stores throughout 45 states under a dozen names, including Lord & Taylor, Foley’s, Filene’s and Hecht’s. Pasta Pomodoro (310-979-9254) is planning to open a Pomodoro Cucina Italiana at 301 Manhattan Beach Boulevard in Manhattan Beach, CA. It will be the company’s 33rd West Coast restaurant. The company also plans to open additional restaurants in Corona and Laguna Beach, CA during the coming few months. Wendy’s International (614-764-3100) is
planning to open a Wendy’s restaurant at Centerplace of Greeley Shopping Center,
