Who's Opening & Where


Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open its first Manhattan location next Summer in New York, NY. The store will be located in the Flatiron District, and will give Home Depot a presence in all five of the city’s boroughs. The company currently operates 75 locations in the greater NY market. The multi-level store will be located on the south side of 23rd Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, with a second entrance on 22nd Street. The store will occupy more than 108,000 sq.ft. with a street-level showroom and a lower-level retail floor. The space also will feature a mezzanine. The company currently operates 1,616 stores throughout all 50 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, eight Canadian provinces and Mexico.

Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open 140 stores during fiscal 2004 and 150 in fiscal 2005. The company currently operates more than 900 stores nationwide.

Wendy’s International (614-764-3100) is planning to open 255 Baja Fresh restaurants during the coming four years. The company currently operates 445 locations nationwide.

Furniture Brand International (405-947-7433) is planning to open a 16,000 sq.ft. Drexel Heritage showroom and a 10,000 sq.ft. Henredon furniture store in Hartsdale, NY. The space was formerly occupied Today’s Man. The openings are slated for mid-November.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open approximately 50 to 55 discount stores and 220 to 230 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations. Relocations or expansions of existing discount stores will account for approximately 140 of the Supercenters. The company also is planning to expand its Neighborhood Market concept by adding approximately 25 to 30 units in the upcoming fiscal year. The Sam’s Club division will open 35 to 40 domestic clubs, while Wal*Mart International plans to open 130 to 140 units throughout the existing markets.

Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) opened 430 stores, including 209 in the fourth quarter alone. Overall, the company is planning to operate 7,000 locations by 2010. The company currently operates 4,227 stores throughout 44 states and Puerto Rico.

Smith & Hawken, Ltd. (415-506-3700) opened seven stores, including locations in Walnut Creek, CA; Seattle, WA; Scottsdale, AZ; Westfield and Marlton, NJ; Geneva, WI and Richmond, VA. The company is planning to open three stores by the end of the year, with eight additional stores planned for next year. The company, which specializes in products for the garden and home, currently operates 53 locations nationwide.

Hairmax International Corp. (954-717-8680) is planning to open stores in the Las Vegas, NV area, as well as in Fort Lauderdale and southern FL. Opening for the first HAIRMAX location in northwest Las Vegas is slated to occur during the fourth quarter of 2003. The company also is planning to open at least six additional franchise stores in the Las Vegas market. The company has already begun construction on the location in Coral Springs, FL, with a projected opening for November. The company also is planning to open eight more stores in the southern FL market. Hairmax International expects to begin franchise marketing in FL during the first quarter of 2004, with the potential of growth to 50 stores in the state.

Liz Claiborne, Inc. (212-354-4900) opened a Mexx store on Fifth Avenue in New York, NY. Two additional stores are slated to open next month and there are plans to open 10 to 15 more units per year during the coming several years. The average price point at the Dutch fashion store is just over $50.

The Finish Line, Inc. (317-899-1022) recently opened 36 stores, remodeled 16 existing stores and closed three locations. The company currently operates 510 locations throughout 46 states and plans to open another 19 locations.

Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a 126,000 sq.ft. store in at the Savannah Mall in Savannah, GA during Fall next year. The store will occupy the upper level of a new two-story building. The mall is cotenanted by Dillard’s and Bass Pro Shops.

Factory Card & Party Outlet Corp. (630-579-2240) opened a store in Noblesville, IN. The prototype store is the first of five locations planned for fiscal 2003. The company also expects to open 10 stores during fiscal 2004. It is the first opening for the company in five years. Factory Card & Party Outlet Corp. currently operates 172 locations throughout 20 states.

Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is planning to move its location at Main Street’s Crossroad Plaza to The Gateway mixed-use development in Salt Lake City, UT.

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open two department stores in the Birmingham, AL area. The stores will be located at 5900 Chalkville Mountain Road in Trussville, AL and at 1100 Inverness Corners in space formerly occupied by Kmart. These stores will be the chain’s second and third in the state. Overall, the company plans on opening 85 stores nationwide. Currently, the company operates 542 stores throughout 36 states.

Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) opened a Sears Grand store at Jordan Landing in West Jordan, UT. The store offers the usual selections in Sears, as well as automotive, home improvement and gardening departments, an expanded health and beauty section and pantry items. Unique to the store is a cafe and seasonal decorative merchandise for major holidays. The 210,000 sq.ft. store also features yellow kiosks where customers can check prices or ask for assistance. The company is planning to open four more Sears Grand stores nationwide next year and in 2005.

Uno Restaurant Holdings Corp. (617-323-9200) is planning to open four Pizzeria Uno Chicago Grill restaurants by the end of the year. Overall, the company plans on expanding to 200 locations nationwide.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Inc. (504-454-6560) is planning to open a restaurant at the intersection of Sharon Avenue and Morrison Boulevard in Charlotte, NC. The company currently operates a location in Greensboro, NC and has a franchisee in Raleigh, NC. Overall, the company operates 80 restaurants nationwide.

The May Department Stores, Inc. (314-342-6300) acquired certain assets of Desmonds Formalwear. May will operate the Desmond stores as part of its After Hours Formalwear unit within May’s Bridal Group, which includes David’s Bridal, After Hours Formalwear and Priscilla of Boston. This year, the company has opened 12 David’s Bridal locations and two After Hours stores. The company plans to open 18 additional David’s Bridal stores, 13 After Hours stores and two Priscilla of Boston stores during the rest of the year. May Department Stores currently operates 448 stores under the names of Lord & Taylor, Famous-Barr, Filene’s, Foley’s, Hecht’s, Kaufmann’s, L.S. Ayres, Meier & Frank, Robinsons-May, Strawbridge’s and The Jones Store, as well as 193 David’s Bridal stores, 331 After Hours Formalwear stores and 10 Priscilla of Boston stores.

Applebee’s (913-967-4000) is planning to open a location at the Plaza Shopping Center in Evergreen Park, IL during December.
