Who's Opening & Where


Trader Joe’s Co. (626-599-3700) is planning to open 20 to 25 stores this year. The specialty supermarkets average between 7,500 sq.ft. and 10,000 sq.ft. A typical Trader Joe’s store carries 2,500 products, compared with 25,000 at a conventional supermarket. The stores have a Polynesian theme.

Salvation Army (703-684-5500) opened a Salvation Army Thrift Store at 310 Russell Street in Hadley, MA. The space was formerly occupied by Frank’s Nursery. The 28,310 sq.ft. store will offer furniture, home accessories, toys, books, linens and dishware. The Salvation Army also operates stores in Amherst and Northampton, MA. The organization also is opening similar, larger thrift stores at former Frank’s Nursery sites in Springfield and Westfield.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (303-846-6000) opened two restaurants during the second quarter and expects to open another three locations before the end of the third quarter. Overall, Red Robin hopes to open 10 to 12 restaurants this year. The company currently operates 104 company-owned restaurants, 21 Canadian franchise restaurants and a total of 203 restaurants nationwide.

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) opened 35 stores during the first half of the year with 28 locations in the Los Angeles, CA area, three stores in the San Antonio, TX market and a store each in Kalamazoo, MI; West Springfield, MA; Hooksett, NH and Doylestown, PA. The company currently plans to open another 50 stores in the second half of the year, including 48 locations in October. Kohl’s plans to open 10 stores in the Phoenix, AZ area; three stores in the Little Rock, AR area; three stores in the Las Vegas, NV area; two stores in the Birmingham, AL area; two stores in the Tucson, AZ area and one store in Flagstaff, AZ. In addition, the company will add 11 stores in the Midwest region, five stores in the Mid-Atlantic region, five stores in the Northeast, four stores in the Southeast, two stores in the Southcentral region and two stores in the Southwest. Kohl’s also plans on opening approximately 95 stores in fiscal 2004, including entry into the Sacramento, CA area with seven stores; five stores in the San Diego, CA area and three stores in the Fresno, CA area.

Stein Mart (904-346-1500) is planning to open a 28,000 sq.ft. department store at Eastgate Shopping Center in Chapel Hill, NC. The space was formerly occupied by Food Lion. Opening is slated for November, replacing the Stein Mart that closed at Westgate Shopping Center in Durham, NC.

Rite Aid Corp. (717-761-2633) is planning to open 75 stores by 2005 and 100 more during 2006. The company is planning expansion into the Northwest, including WA.

Dairy Queen International (952-830-0200) is planning to open Dairy Queen Grill & Chill restaurants in the Jacksonville, FL area. The company is finalizing negotiations with a franchisee to open 10 to 12 of the 3,000 sq.ft. restaurants throughout the Jacksonville area during the coming three years. The company currently operates 16 Grill & Chill locations in the U.S.

Fresh Enterprises (805-495-4704) is planning to open Baja Fresh Mexican Grill restaurants in Boston, MA; New York, NY and Philadelphia, PA. The company also is planning to open restaurants in NJ with locations in Watchung, Ocean and East Brunswick. The first Philadelphia location will open by year’s end. Baja Fresh currently operates 250 company-owned and franchised dine-in or takeout fresh Mexican Grill locations throughout 23 states. Baja Fresh has opened over 40 restaurants this year and is targeting more than 500 restaurants by 2005.

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter on a 22-acre site located along Philips Highway, south of Emerson Street, in Jacksonville, FL. The company also is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter at the intersection of Randol Mill Road and North Collins Street in Fort Worth, TX. The space was formerly occupied by Kmart. Supercenters typically are 200,000 sq.ft.

Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) is planning to open a Best Buy store at a former Fry’s Supermarket located at the intersection of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Loop 101 in North Scottsdale, AZ this Fall. Overall, the company plans on opening 24 stores throughout 17 states during the coming 18 months. The stores typically average 45,000 sq.ft.

Haircolorxpress International, Inc. (954-788-3020) is planning to open 25 stores in the Pittsburgh, PA area during the coming few years. Overall, the company expects to operate 4,000 salons nationwide during the coming seven years.

Lifestyle Street Gear (716-838-2388) is opening a 6,000 sq.ft. store at 1048 Broadway Avenue in Buffalo, NY. The space was formerly occupied by Family Dollar. The company currently operates eight stores, including five in Buffalo. Other stores are located in Rochester, NY and Erie, PA. The Broadway Avenue store will house both Lifestyle Street Gear and Lifestyle Kids Gear.

Foodtown, Inc. (732-596-6000) is planning to open a supermarket off Main Street in Poughkeepsie, NY. The company currently operates stores in Amenia, Dover Plains, LaGrange and Cold Spring, NY.

Ann Taylor Stores Corp. (212-541-3300) opened two Ann Taylor Loft stores, one Ann Taylor Factory store and closed one Ann Taylor store and one Ann Taylor Factory store during the second quarter of fiscal 2003. During the Fall season, the company plans to open approximately eight Ann Taylor stores and 44 Ann Taylor Loft stores. The company currently operates 603 stores nationwide, including 350 Ann Taylor stores, 226 Ann Taylor Loft stores and 27 Ann Taylor Factory stores.

Lowe’s Cos, Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open 130 stores this year, including 25 smaller-concept stores. The company typically operates 116,000 sq.ft. locations, with the smaller concept averaging 94,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 875 stores throughout 45 states.

U.S. Factory Outlets, Inc. (212-563-3650) opened a 40,000 sq.ft. anchor store at the Shipyard Shopping Center in Wilmington, DE. The store will be the third of five stores totaling 300,000 sq.ft., which will be opened during this year. Other locations include Hanover, PA; Hamilton, OH; McMinnville, TN and Chambersburg, PA.

CBRL Group, Inc. (615-444-5533) is planning to open a 9,984 sq.ft. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store on Cortez Road in Bradenton, FL. Opening is slated for March 2004. About 2,000 sq.ft. typically is set aside for the retail store. The site plan also calls for a future 40-room hotel behind the restaurant and a 2,700 sq.ft. fast food restaurant on the property’s eastern side. The company currently operates 450 restaurants and gift shops throughout 41 states.

Ruby Tuesday (865-379-5700) is planning to open seven restaurants throughout MD, including a location in Baltimore near Loch Raven Shopping Center on East Northern Parkway; one in Essex near Riverdale Plaza on Eastern Boulevard and one in Linthicum near the AmeriSuites at 940 International Drive. The company also is planning restaurants in Clinton, Landover, Elkton and Frederick, MD this year. The store will be located next to a supermarket that is planned for construction.

Bear Rock Cafe (919-859-6610) is planning to open 13 locations in Boston and Worcester, MA. The company currently operates 18 locations throughout five states. Bear Rock now has 141 franchise commitments throughout 17 states.

Steak N Shake (317-633-4100) is planning to open two restaurants in the fourth quarter of 2003 and 15 company-owned Steak N Shake restaurants in fiscal year 2004. The company currently operates 358 restaurants. The company recently opened 12 restaurants.

Huddle House, Inc. (404-377-5700) opened a Huddle House restaurant at the intersection of Highway 119 and One Central Avenue in Chapmanville, TN. Overall, the company is planning to open 32 restaurants nationwide. The Chapmanville restaurant will feature the company’s new interior design, a traditional diner look with polished chrome trim, green and white checkerboard tile, red cushion counter stool seating and mahogany wood benches. The company currently operates 370 restaurants throughout 13 states in the Southeast. Overall, the company is planning to open approximately 100 restaurants throughout WV.

Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a Target store in Forestville, MD. The site was formerly occupied by a Forest Village Park Mall located off Donnell Road and Route 4. The mall’s northern tip will be demolished and a building for Target will be erected. The company currently operates 1,519 stores throughout 47 states, including 1,191 Target stores, 266 Mervyn’s stores and 62 Marshall Field’s stores.

Goody’s Family Clothing, Inc. (865-966-2000) is planning to open five stores, remodel four stores and close two stores during the remaining two quarters of fiscal 2003. For fiscal 2004, the company is planning to open 20 to 25 stores and relocate or remodel up to 25 existing stores. The company currently operates 328 stores, with locations mainly in the Southeast, Midwest and Southwest.

Galyan’s Trading Co. (317-612-2243) is planning to open nine stores during fiscal 2004. The company currently operates 38 stores throughout 18 states.

Dick’s Sporting Goods (412-787-1330) is planning to open 22 stores this year. The company currently operates 151 stores throughout 27 states in the eastern half of the U.S. During the second quarter, the company opened two stores, including locations in East Hanover, NJ and one in Portland, ME.

Shopko Stores, Inc. (920-429-2211) completed the remodeling of 11 Pamida stores, began remodeling two ShopKo stores, prepared to open two Pamida stores and announced the test of a freestanding drug store concept called ShopKo Express Rx. The company currently operates 359 stores throughout 23 states in the Midwest, Western Mountain and Pacific Northwest region. Approximately 141 multi-department ShopKo stores are located in mid-sized to larger cities and 218 Pamida stores are located in smaller communities in the U.S.

Belk, Inc. (704-357-1000) is planning to open a Belk department store at the Stirling Mandeville Shopping Centre located in Mandeville, LA during March 2004. The store will be approximately 74,000 sq.ft. on one level. The company currently operates 214 stores throughout 13 Southeastern states.

Talbots (781-749-7600) opened 10 stores during the second quarter of this year. Overall, the company plans on opening 53 stores in the second half of the year. The company is planning to operate a total of 977 stores nationwide. The company’s fall expansion plans includes the addition of three Talbots Mens stores, which are scheduled to open during this month. The upcoming openings for this concept include Madison Avenue in New York, NY; Tysons Corner in the Washington, DC area and the Prudential Center in Boston, MA. Talbots plans on ending the year with six Talbots Mens locations.

Men’s Wearhouse, Inc. (713-592-7200) is planning to open seven Men’s Wearhouse locations and three K&G locations this year. The company currently operates 681 stores nationwide.

Justin’s Restaurant and Bar (212-352-0599) is planning to open eight restaurants during the coming five years. Overall, the company is planning to open 30 to 40 restaurants in select areas nationwide. The restaurants specialize in southern soul food and Caribbean island cuisine, with entrees ranging from $17 to $39.
