Who's Opening & Where


Salvation Army (703-684-5500) opened a Salvation Army Thrift Store at 310 Russell Street in Hadley, MA. The space was formerly occupied by Frank’s Nursery. The 28,310 sq.ft. store will offer furniture, home accessories, toys, books, linens and dishware. The Salvation Army also operates stores in Amherst and Northampton, MA. The organization also is opening similar, larger thrift stores at former Frank’s Nursery sites in Springfield and Westfield.

Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a 250,000 sq.ft. Cabela’s store situated on a land area of 100 acres in Hamburg, PA during October. The sporting goods store will feature a 30-foot mountain, as well as a trout pond with running streams and waterfalls. Also on display will be a 55,000 gallon freshwater aquarium, highlighting fish indigenous to the Northeast. The company also plans on opening a store during August 2004 in Wheeling, WV. The company currently operates 10 stores.

Kirkland’s, Inc. (731-668-2444) opened 10 stores and closed three stores during the second quarter of 2003. Overall, the company plans to open 40 stores, while closing 10 stores, this year. The company currently operates 259 home decor stores throughout 31 states.

Coldwater Creek (208-263-2266) is planning to open 25 full-line stores this year, which includes seven locations already opened during the first six months. The company currently operates 48 ladies apparel stores nationwide.

Bass Pro Shops (417-873-5000) is planning to open a store at Colonial Mall in Myrtle Beach, SC. The 119,000 sq.ft. store will take over space formerly occupied by Kmart. Construction is expected to begin soon, with completion slated for late Spring 2004. The store will feature a 10,000 sq.ft. Islamorada Fish Company restaurant. The company currently operates 18 locations nationwide.

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (614-283-6500) is planning to open a 6,000 sq.ft. Hollister store at the Northpark Mall in Joplin, MO. The store will be designed to evoke a California beach hut, which reflects the relaxed West Coast, surfer-inspired concept behind the chain. Hollister caters to shoppers aged 14 years to 18 years. Hollister currently operates 112 locations nationwide.

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-5366) is planning to open an Olive Garden at the Packwood Creek Regional Shopping Center in Visalia, CA. Opening is slated for March 2004.

Supervalu, Inc. (952-828-4000) is planning to open six Cub Foods stores in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area by early 2005. By early next year, the company is planning to open stores in Arden Hills, Lakeville, Savage and Shorewood, MN. The company also plans to open a store to co-anchor Park Village, a retail development opening in early 2005 in Brooklyn Park, MN. The stores will range from 60,000 sq.ft. to 68,500 sq.ft. The company has been opening an average of four stores per year since 1995. Cub currently operates 108 locations throughout six states, including CO, IA, IL, MN, OH and WI.

Back Yard Burgers, Inc. (901-367-0888) is planning to open 25 restaurants during the coming 10 years, including 23 locations in the Washington, DC area and two locations near State College, PA. The company currently operates and franchises quick-serve restaurants throughout 17 states. Back Yard Burgers operates 42 company-owned and 80 franchised stores. This year, the company has opened locations in Hattiesburg, MS; Point Pleasant, SC and Hopkinsville, KY.

Qdoba Restaurant Corp. (303-629-5000) is planning to open 30 to 40 company-owned restaurants in the Chicago, IL area, starting with locations in Schaumberg in November and then moving on to Downers Grove and Naperville next year. Overall, the company expects to open as many as 100 Qdoba stores during the coming few years. The company currently operates approximately 100 stores nationwide.

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 27 Kohl’s stores throughout the San Francisco Bay area of CA and Sacramento during the coming year. Of the 27 stores, 15 are planned to open by late Winter or Spring, with another 12 opening in Fall 2004.

Coldstone Creamery (480-348-1704) is planning to open locations in southeastern NM, including the Roswell, Hobbs and Clovis markets. The company also is looking to open another shop in Santa Fe, NM. In Albuquerque, Cold Stone Creamery has two stores under construction, including a 1,300 sq.ft. store at 3703 Ellison Road expected to open in early October and a 1,300 sq.ft. location along the Interstate 25 corridor, behind Texas Land & Cattle and Blue Corn Cafe, which is slated to open around Thanksgiving. The company currently operates 450 shops throughout 40 states and the Caribbean.

Trader Joe’s Co. (626-599-3700) is planning to open 20 to 25 stores annually. The specialty supermarkets average between 7,500 sq.ft. and 10,000 sq.ft.

Ethan Allen, Inc. (203-743-8423) opened its first dedicated Ethan Allen Kids store at Westfarms Mall in Farmington, CT. The 2,000 sq.ft. test store is devoting its entire stock to juvenile furnishings. The store also has a baby section, offering cribs, changing tables, sheet sets and blankets. This location is the first of two planned Ethan Allen Kids stores to be opened this year.

S&K Famous Brands, Inc. (804-346-2500) is planning to open 10 stores and close/relocate between four to six underperforming stores. The company currently operates 234 stores nationwide.

Kona Grill (866-328-5662) is planning to open a 7,000 sq.ft. restaurant in the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO. The company also is planning to open a location in the Las Vegas, NV area during the Fall.

Tuesday Morning Corp. (972-387-3562) is planning to open a store at the Williamsburg Shopping Center in Williamsburg, VA. The company currently operates approximately 500 stores nationwide, including four in the Hampton Roads and Richmond, VA areas. The stores specialize in fine crystal, European linen, furniture, luggage and rugs.

Ross Stores (510-505-4400) is planning to open a Ross Dress for Less store at a space formerly occupied by Phar-Mor in the Hampton Coliseum Crossing Shopping Center, a 221,000 sq.ft. center located in Hampton Roads, VA. The 31,000 sq.ft. store is slated to open during March 2004.

Benihana, Inc. (305-593-0770) is planning to open eight restaurants and renovate three other locations. The company’s teppenyaki restaurants are slated to open in Scottsdale, AZ; Alpharetta, GA and Carlsbad, CA. Additionally, the teppenyaki restaurant in Bethesda, MD will be relocating to a freestanding building in a higher-traffic location. The company also is planning to open an RA Sushi restaurant in the Old Town area of Philadelphia, PA; San Diego and Huntington Beach, CA; Tucson, AZ and Chicago, IL. The company currently operates 64 restaurants nationwide, including 54 Benihana teppenyaki restaurants, five Haru sushi restaurants and one Doraku restaurant. Three additional company-owned Benihana teppenyaki restaurants, four RA Sushi restaurants and one Haru restaurant are currently under development. In addition, a total of 22 franchised Benihana teppenyaki restaurants are now open or under development in the U.S. and Latin America.
