Who's Opening & Where Chicago Pizza & Brewery, Inc. (714-848-3747) is planning to open restaurants in Willowbrook, TX and Summerlin, NV during the first half of this year and in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, Fresno, Roseville and Laguna Hills, CA. Additionally, the company has signed a lease to open a restaurant in Folsom, CA during the winter of 2004/2005. The company’s capital expenditures include $17.2 million for new restaurants this year and next year. Chicago Pizza & Brewery, Inc. currently owns and operates 32 restaurants throughout AZ, CA, CO, OR and TX and receives fees from one licensed restaurant in Lahaina, Maui, HI. Trade names include BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, BJ’s Pizza & Grill, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and Pietro’s Pizza.
Bob Evans Restaurants (800-272-7675) is planning to open approximately 11 restaurants in fiscal 2004. The company currently owns and operates 547 full-service, family restaurants throughout 22 states as Bob Evans Restaurants and Owens Restaurants.
Dress Barn, Inc. (845-364-4500) is planning to open approximately 50 stores during the second half of its fiscal year ending July 31. The company currently operates 183 Dress Barn stores, 55 Dress Barn Woman stores and 536 combo stores.
Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) is planning to open a 1,500 sq.ft. store with a drive-thru at the intersection of Peacock and St. Lucie West Boulevards in St. Lucie, FL. The store will be located in a center with a 5,000 sq.ft. T.G.I. Friday’s and a 4,500 sq.ft. Washington Mutual.
Boston Restaurant Associates, Inc. (781-231-7575) is planning to open Pizzeria Regina restaurants at the Prudential Center and at South Station in Boston, MA.
U.S. Factory Outlets, Inc. (212-563-3650) opened a 44,000 sq.ft. store at the Kokomo Mall in Kokomo, IN. The space was formerly occupied by PharMor. The center is co-anchored by Elder-Beerman, JCPenney and Goody’s Family Clothing.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is expecting to open the balance of its planned 95 stores for 2004 during the third fiscal quarter. New markets include San Francisco, CA with 11 stores and Salt Lake City, UT with five stores. The company recently opened 21 stores, including seven locations in Sacramento, CA; three in Memphis, TN and two in Bakersfield, CA. This month, the company plans to open 26 stores, including five locations in San Diego, CA and three in Fresno, CA. Famous Dave’s, Inc. (952-294-1300) is planning to open 20 to 25 franchise-operated restaurants by the end of this year. The company currently owns 38 locations and franchises 54 additional units throughout 23 states and has signed development agreements for an additional 151 franchise locations.
Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8000) opened a freestanding Chick-fil-A location in Dayton, OH. The company also is scouting locations in the area to open two more freestanding restaurants later this year. The city of Dayton and Sugarcreek Township have been mentioned as possibilities. Nationwide, the company plans to open more than 70 freestanding restaurants this year. Chick-fil-A currently operates more than 1,130 restaurants throughout 37 states and Washington, DC.
Jos. A. Bank (410-239-2700) opened its first three stores of the year as part of its plan to grow the chain to 500 stores within three to five years. The company has already opened stores in Ormond Beach and Fort Lauderdale, FL and Wichita, KS. Overall, the company is planning to open as many as 75 stores this year.
Huddle House, Inc. (404-377-5700) franchisee H2O Hospitality will open 20 additional units, bringing H2O’s commitment to 50 Huddle House restaurants. The franchisee will expand its territory into northern VA and will begin opening five locations a year during the coming eight years. H2O currently has four Huddle House restaurants in VA, with locations in Petersburg, Blackstone, Farmville and Appomattox, as well as three locations under construction. Huddle House currently operates nearly 400 restaurants throughout 13 states throughout the Southeast MO and the Mid-Atlantic regions.
Good Times Restaurants, Inc. (303-384-1440) opened a restaurant at the intersection of Academy and Astrozon in Colorado Springs, CO. The restaurant is a drive-thru model, featuring a park-like patio and is a franchised location. It is part of eight to 10 planned Good Times Restaurants in Colorado Springs. Future restaurants will have similar exterior design elements, but will have 60 to 70-seat dining rooms, in addition to the landscaped patio and the company anticipates opening two of those restaurants in the Denver metro area by June. Dillard’s, Inc. (501-376-5200) opened a 200,000 sq.ft. store at The Shoppes at EastChase, a center located in Montgomery, AL. The store features expanded lines, including designers such as Dana Buchman, Ellen Tracey, Aigil and Chanel. Cotenants include Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Abercrombie & Fitch, Talbots and Williams-Sonoma.
Fatburger Corp. (310-319-1850) is looking to expand into a national chain, including a full market rollout of Pittsburgh, PA area locations. Businessman John Tucic signed on as a franchisee to develop as many as 10 to 15 restaurants throughout western PA and northern WV. Overall, the company has franchisee agreements to open another 250 restaurants throughout MI, MO, NC, NY and other areas.
El Pollo Loco (949-399-2000) plans to enter the CO market during 2005 as part of a nationwide expansion. The company plans to grow modestly through franchising and currently seeks franchisees in the Denver area. The chain hopes to open its first Denver restaurant in 2005 and have 15 to 20 sites in the metro area. The company currently operates 314 restaurants, including 136 company-owned and 178 franchisee-owned locations in AZ, CA, NV and TX. Kash n’ Karry Food Stores, Inc. (813-620-1139) is opening a new supermarket concept. The company plans to open the first Sweetbay Supermarket stores in Seminole, Naples and Fort Myers. During the coming three years, Kash n’ Karry will convert stores to the Sweetbay Supermarket brand. The new stores will provide fresh foods, including ethnic foods. Kash n’ Karry is publicly traded as Delhaize Group, which operates 2,559 supermarkets throughout 10 countries and three continents.
Menard’s (715-832-3344) reopened a 250,000 sq.ft. superstore in West Duluth, MN, which features new departments, including an expanded appliance section and garden center. Part of the original building, which dates back to the 1930s, remains intact and is brightly lit by sunshine beaming through glass, block windows and skylights. Self-service kiosks are also located throughout the store, providing estimates and product information. Future Menards’ openings and renovations will be similar to the West Duluth store. The company currently operates stores in IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, NE, ND, OH, SD and WI.
