Who's Opening & Where Dollar General (615-855-4000) is planning to open 20 Dollar General Markets this year. The market format focuses more on food than the company’s traditional dollar stores. The test stores are also larger than the 6,700 sq.ft. traditional stores, with 16,000 sq.ft. of space. The company currently operates two of the test stores in TN. Overall, the company is planning to open 675 traditional Dollar General stores this year.
TJX Cos. (508-390-1000) is planning to open a T.J. Maxx store at Indian Hills Plaza, a center located on Mission Street in Mount Pleasant, MI. The store will occupy a space of 25,000 sq.ft. and will be located between Mancino’s and First Wok. The TJX Cos. trades as T.J. Maxx, which sells brand-name family apparel, accessories, women’s shoes, domestics, giftware, and jewelry at discount prices at approximately 750 stores nationwide and Marshalls, which offers a full line of shoes and a broader selection of menswear through more than 670 stores. Its HomeGoods chain of about 180 stores nationwide focuses on home furnishings, while its nearly 100 A.J. Wright clothing stores cater to lower-income shoppers located in the Northeast and Midwest.
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (800-426-4840) is planning to open a 22,500 sq.ft. store in Huntington Beach, CA. REI plans to open the store in the Bella Terra Center, formerly the Huntington Center, during Spring 2005. The store will be REI’s sixth in the Los Angeles, CA market. Other stores are located in Santa Ana, Arcadia, Manhattan Beach and Northridge, with a Rancho Cucamonga store slated to open during November. The company currently operates 69 stores throughout 24 states. REI sells high-end gear, clothing, and footwear (including private-label goods) for outdoor activities such as climbing, kayaking, and skiing, as well as for hiking, bicycling, and camping. The company also repairs gear, and it sells merchandise online and through occasional catalogs.
Cattlemen’s Restaurants (707-528-1040) is planning to open sites from 8,000 sq.ft. to 12,000 sq.ft. throughout AZ. The company will acquire conversions or pads.
Golfcraft, Inc. (952-933-9935) is planning to expand with company-owned and franchised Golfcraft: 2nd Chance Golf outlets throughout San Antonio, TX and other markets, such as Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth and the Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ area. The company currently operates a 10,000 sq.ft. location along Interstate 10 near Wurzbach, TX.
Meijer, Inc. (616-453-6711) is planning to open five stores later this year, including a 205,000 sq.ft. store west of Rockford, MI. The company also is planning to open eight stores during 2005. The company currently operates nearly 160 combination grocery and general merchandise stores. Half the stores are located in MI, while the rest are in IL, IN, KY and OH.
Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) is planning to open a store at a former Kmart space located on West Saginaw Highway in Saginaw, MI. The 118,000 sq.ft. building is situated on a land area of 11 acres. The building will get a new façade, roof, parking lot and landscaping, plus an addition on the west side where Kmart’s garden center used to be. Opening is slated for late Summer. Burlington Coat Factory operates more than 330 stores offering current, brand-name clothing at less than the standard retail price. It also sells bath items, children’s apparel and furniture, gifts, jewelry, linens, and shoes. The company operates under such names as Burlington Coat Factory, Baby Depot, Cohoes Fashions, Luxury Linens, MJM Designer Shoes and Totally 4 Kids in more than 40 states. Aldi (866-642-7978) also is planning to open a 16,800 sq.ft. store at the Kmart site.
P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Inc. (602-957-8986) is planning to open a 7,600 sq.ft. freestanding P.F. Chang’s restaurant at the intersection of Shelbyville Road and Whittington Parkway at the Hurstbourne Business Center in Louisville, KY. Currently, there are 103 P.F. Chang’s China Bistro locations throughout 29 states. The Louisville restaurant is one of about 18 new Bistro units the company plans to open this year. Construction of the restaurant is expected to begin next month. The company also owns and operates 20 limited service Pei Wei Asian Diners throughout AZ, CA, and TX.
Gordon Food Service, Inc. (616-530-7000) is planning to open a store along South Avenue in Boardman, OH. The company, which is the nation’s largest privately held food service distributor, plans to open a GFS Marketplace store in a 14,000 sq.ft. building formerly used for parking at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center. The company currently operates distribution centers and stores across Canada, as well as in FL, IL, IN, MI and currently has 30 stores throughout OH. The company’s Boardman location will be its 110th store. Opening is slated for late Summer. The store will carry more than 3,000 food-service items. It will target customers such as businesses, smaller restaurants, caterers, day-care operators, concessionaries, religious organizations and service organizations.
99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) is planning to open 48 stores this year, growing its square footage by about 25 percent. The stores will be located throughout AZ, CA, NV and TX. The openings will be spread throughout the four quarters of 2004, with six stores already opened this year. 99 Cents Only Stores sells closeout and regular general merchandise for 99 cents or less. The company currently operates nearly 200 stores. Most of the company’s stores are located in southern CA, but there are also a few in central CA, Las Vegas, NV; Phoenix, AZ and TX.
The Sports Authority (954-735-1701) is planning to open a 48,000 sq.ft. store at Carousel Center Mall in Clay, NY. The company operates stores under its name, as well as sporting goods stores under the names of Gart Sports, which Sports Authority merged with last year, Oshman’s and Sportmart. The Sports Authority sells sports equipment, general merchandise, shoes, and apparel. The company currently operates approximately 385 stores throughout 45 states.
Bally Total Fitness Holding Corporation (773-380-3000) opened a 20,000 sq.ft., two-story fitness center at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, NY. The club, located by the Regal Cinema-18 movie complex, has mall and exterior entrances, two aerobics studios, two cardio platforms, a day-care room and other amenities. The company also is planning to open two additional clubs during the coming several years, with possible locations in Saratoga Springs and Poughkeepsie, NY. The company operates approximately 420 gyms throughout 29 states, Canada, Mexico, and Asia. Most of its locations do business under its flagship Bally Total Fitness brand, while the more upscale gyms operate as Gorilla Sports, Pinnacle Fitness, Crunch, Sports Clubs of Canada, and Bally Sports Clubs.
