Who's Opening & Where Staples, Inc. (508-253-5000) is planning to open a 19,000 sq.ft. Staples store at the Garland Building located at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Washington Street in Chicago, IL. Opening is slated for the spring. The company currently operates more than 1,500 Staples and Staples Express stores, which are located mostly in the U.S. and Canada. The company also has stores in Belgium, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands and the U.K.
Planet Beach Tanning Salon (888-290-8266) is planning to open a 1,500 sq.ft. store at Centre Square in Portage, MI during February. The salon will be the third MI location for the company.
Golf Galaxy, Inc. (952-941-8848) is planning to open between 12 to 15 Golf Galaxy stores during its 2005 fiscal year, which begins in March. The company also announced that it is in the process of achieving its goal of opening 10 stores in its fiscal 2004 year. Golf Galaxy has already opened nine stores this year and is slated to open one more during February in San Antonio, TX. The store will be the first in a multi-store plan for TX. Golf Galaxy owns and operates a chain of 49 specialty stores that offer golf equipment, accessories, apparel and golf services in an interactive store environment designed to provide customers with pro shop service.
WinCo Foods, Inc. (208-377-0110) is planning to open stores throughout southern CA, as well as in other parts of the state. The company is currently planning to open a store in Pomona, the greater Sacramento, CA market, in Vacaville and a store to replace an existing WinCo in Redding. The company currently operates 40 stores, which feature pizza shops, bakeries, health and beauty products and organic foods.

Stater Bros. Markets (909-783-5000) is planning to open supermarkets in Wildomar, Fontana and Adelanto, CA. The company currently operates 159 full-service supermarkets, with 47 in San Bernardino County, 43 in Riverside County, 30 in Orange County, 27 in Los Angeles County, 10 in Northern San Diego County and two in Kern County.

Gander Mountain (952-830-8700) is planning to open 18 to 22 stores during fiscal 2005, including two or three locations. The company currently operates 82 Gander Mountain outdoor lifestyle stores throughout 14 states.

The Dress Barn, Inc. currently operates 792 stores throughout 45 states. Maurice’s operates 464 stores throughout 38 states and Washington, DC. The retailer’s Dress Barn, Dress Barn Woman, which offers larger sizes, and combination stores sell in-season, moderate- to better-quality women’s apparel and accessories at discount prices and cater to professional women ages 25-55. Some stores also sell petite sizes, jewelry and shoes.
Rent-Way, Inc. (814-455-5378) is planning to open four to six stores by the end of the year. Also, the company is looking to open approximately 30 to 40 stores during the coming year. The company currently operates 761 stores, which rent namebrand merchandise such as home entertainment equipment, throughout 33 states.

The company also is planning to open between 40 and 45 discount stores and 240 to 250 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations during fiscal 2005. Of the new Supercenters, approximately 160 will be relocations or expansions of existing stores. The company also plans to extend its Neighborhood Market concept by adding 25 to 30 units during the next fiscal year. Wal*Mart also plans to open 30 to 40 Sam’s Club centers and is looking to open 155 to 165 international locations. The company currently operates more than 4,800 stores, including approximately 1,475 Wal*Mart stores, 1,750 Wal-Mart Supercenter stores and 540 Sam’s Club locations. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but the company is also the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns nearly 38% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Big Boy International, LLC (586-759-6000) is planning to open six Bob’s Big Boy restaurants throughout southern CA during the coming six years. The first restaurant to open will be a Bob’s Big Boy Express located on Hallock Drive in Santa Paula, CA. Opening is slated for February. The space was formerly occupied by Wendy’s. The Express restaurant will have elements of the Big Boy prototype restaurant’s design and color scheme. The company currently operates more than 455 Big Boy restaurants throughout the U.S. and Japan.
Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-4000) is planning to open an Outback Steakhouse at the Village Green Shopping Center in Sevierville, TN. The company also is planning to open an Olive Garden restaurant at the intersection of Parkway and New Era Road in Sevierville next year. Olive Garden operates more than 530 restaurants. The company currently operates more than 1,300 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, including Red Lobster, which operates approximately 650 restaurants. Darden also operates a small chain of tropical-themed Bahama Breeze restaurants that offer Caribbean-inspired food, along with Smokey Bones BBQ, a chain of barbeque joints designed with sports fans in mind.
Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) is planning to open a Sonic Drive-In at the end of the month in Ellenton, FL. The company also is planning to open a Sonic on the east side of Interstate 75 in East Manatee. The company currently operates approximately 535 restaurants and franchises more than 2,325 locations throughout 30 states, primarily in the southern U.S. The company also operates locations in Mexico.
