Who's Opening & Where Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) opened a 116,000 sq.ft. store in Glenmont, NY. The company also is planning to open stores in Halfmoon and Latham, NY. Lowe’s Cos. also is planning to open a store at the Wrigley building in Santa Cruz, CA. The deal involves about 132,000 sq.ft. of space on the building’s first floor. The company currently operates 925 stores throughout 45 states. Under the company’s plan, it will open 140 stores this year and 150 during 2005. Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open approximately 100 Applebee’s restaurants this year, including at least 28 company-owned locations and 70 to 80 franchised locations. At least 10 company restaurants are expected to open in the first half of the year, with the balance opening in the second half. Approximately 20 to 25 restaurants are slated to open in the first half of the year, with the remainder opening in the second half. The company currently operates 1,585 Applebee’s restaurants throughout 49 states and nine international countries.
Meijer, Inc. (616-453-6711) is planning to open five stores this year and eight during 2005. The company currently operates 158 stores throughout IL, IN, KY, MI and OH.
Eckerd Corp. (800-325-3737) is planning to open 20 stores throughout CO, with locations in Evans, Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor.
Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to open 2,700 stores by 2010, which would bring the company’s total to 7,000 locations.
The Cheesecake Factory (818-871-3000) opened its 74th Cheesecake Factory restaurant, a 10,000 sq.ft. location in Birmingham, AL. The company also operates three upscale casual dining restaurants under the Grand Lux Café tradename in Los Angeles, CA; Chicago, IL and Las Vegas, NV; one self-service, limited-menu “express” foodservice operation under The Cheesecake Factory Express mark inside the Disney Quest family entertainment center in Orlando, FL; and licenses three bakery café outlets to another foodservice operator under The Cheesecake Factory Baker Café name.
Le Gourmet Chef (201-223-5999 Ext. 502) is continuing its expansion into malls with 20 planned locations this year. The company currently operates 73 stores nationwide. The company specializes in a wide variety of kitchen merchandise, such as cookware, bakeware and electronics; decorative accessories, including candles, kitchen towels, napkins and casual tableware; and packaged gourmet food assortments such as hot sauces, bread dippers and gourmet coffees.
Panda Restaurant Group
(800-877-8988) is planning to open 160 restaurants throughout 12 states this
year. The company is planning to expand throughout the West, but also in FL, GA,
HI, IL, MD, MN, MO, NC, OH, TX, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. The company
currently operates more than 600 locations nationwide. Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open stores in the northern suburbs of NY. The company plans to open stores in Mount Vernon and Mount Kisco, NY by the end of the year, as well as in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, NY during July and in Bethel, CT in March. The company currently operates 1,476 stores throughout 47 states. The company also operates Marshall Field’s and Mervyn’s stores.
Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8000) is planning to open 90 restaurants this year. The company is planning to open its first freestanding restaurant in Chino Hills, CA. Continuing its western expansion, the company will be opening two additional freestanding restaurants in Phoenix, AZ, a third southern CA location next month, and potentially another five restaurants throughout the southern CA area, primarily in Orange County, Inland Empire and San Diego, by the end of the year. Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) is planning to open up to 73 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada during 2005. Included in that total, the company expects to open approximately 60 domestic Best Buy stores. Approximately one-third of the stores are to be in the 45,000 sq.ft. format, another third in the 30,000 sq.ft. format and the remainder in the smaller-market format. Most of the stores are to be opened in markets where the company already has stores. Plans include the company’s first store in HI, as well as a new flagship superstore in West Hollywood, CA. Best Buy Co. also plans to open 10 Best Buy stores in Canada, predominantly in the 30,000 sq.ft. format. New markets include Calgary, Alberta; Regina, Saskatchewan and Langley, British Columbia. The company also anticipates opening additional stores in the greater Toronto area.
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-391-8400) is planning to open six stores throughout the Puget Sound area of Seattle, WA by early 2006. All of the stores will be in the 50,000 sq.ft. range. The company also is planning to open two stores in the Issaquah/Sammamish Plateau/Preston area by early 2005 and opening in Redmond and neighboring communities to the east, opening mid-2005.

U.S. Factory Outlets (212-563-3650) is planning to open a 42,300 sq.ft. store at the Kokomo Mall in Kokomo, IN next month. The space was formerly occupied by Phar Mor. Cotenants at the 400,000 sq.ft. mall include JCPenney, Elder Beerman, Goody’s Family Clothing, Deb Shop, Claire’s, Sycamore Cottage, Wells Fargo Financial and Panera Bread. The company currently operates 32 stores throughout 16 states, including three throughout IN.
Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to open a 22,000 sq.ft. store at the Park West Place Shopping Center on Interstate 5 in Stockton, CA during July. The store would be the first in Stockton and the seventh in the great Sacramento, CA area. The company currently operates 1,270 stores under the following tradenames: Borders, Waldenbooks and Books Etc.
Wireless Zone (860-613-0393) is planning to open six stores throughout FL, as well as four locations throughout VA. Overall, the company is planning to open as many as 250 stores by the end of this year. The company currently operates 200 stores nationwide. The company recently opened stores at the following locations: 2521 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton, 9401 West Colonial Drive in Ocoee and 220 West Lake Mary Boulevard in Sanford, as well as the following three locations in Orlando: 6641 Old Winter Garden Road, 8001 South Orange Blossom Trail and 3201 East Colonial Drive. Red Robin (303-846-6000) is planning to open eight restaurants throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX metroplex during the coming six years.
The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) is planning to open a 104,000 sq.ft. Kroger supermarket at the Anderson Towne Center in Cincinnati, OH. The site will be the largest of the company’s 2,500 stores and will include a Starbucks Coffee shop, a Fred Meyer Jewelry store, a fuel station, a drive-thru pharmacy window and a photo lab.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a 200,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart Supercenter in Mukwonago, WI. The building would sit in the village’s Gateway district near Interstate 43 and Highway 83. The company currently operates 30 Supercenters throughout WI and 1,400 throughout the U.S. The stores range in size from 99,000 sq.ft. to 220,000 sq.ft.
Forever 21 (213-747-2121) is planning to open 12 stores this year.
Tiffany & Co. (212-755-8000) is planning to open its first shop in MN, a 5,400 sq.ft. location at the Galleria in Edina, MN. The store is slated to open this Summer. The company typically opens three to five stores a year throughout the U.S.
Bassett Furniture (276-629-6000) is planning to open two stores throughout the Atlanta, GA market. Overall, the company plans on opening five stores throughout Atlanta during the coming four years.
