Who's Opening & Where Wild Oats Markets (303-440-5220) is planning to open a store in Houston, TX. The company also is focusing its expansion on San Antonio and Austin, TX.
Great Clips, Inc. (952-893-9088) is planning to open between 260 and 270 salons this year. The company currently operates approximately 2,000 locations nationwide.
Kolache Factory (281-829-6188) is planning to open locations in Denver, CO and McAllen, TX this summer. Additional bakery/cafes are scheduled to open in other cities later this year. The company plans on opening 200 franchised locations by 2008. There are currently 14 company-owned and five franchised stores in Houston; two franchised stores in Indianapolis, IN and one each in the following cities: Phoenix, AZ; Louisville, KY and St. Louis, MO. Franchised stores are slated to open in Cincinnati, OH; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Atlanta, GA; WA; San Antonio, TX and Tampa, FL.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open a Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Niles, MI. Opening is slated for the Fall. The company currently operates more than 930 superstores throughout about 45 states.
Family Dollar Stores, Inc. (704-847-6961) is planning to open approximately 525 stores during its fiscal year, which ends August 28. The company currently operates 5,236 discount stores nationwide.
Food Lion, LLC (704-633-8250) is planning to open five pilot stores to test a new concept, format and brand name. The “Bloom, A Food Lion Market” stores will be open by the end of the year in the Charlotte, NC area. The store design, layout and merchandising will be different from traditional Food Lion stores. The stores also will test new technologies in the retail environment, including technologies that help consumers find products, get information and check out easier. The company currently operates approximately 1,200 supermarkets. Nearly half of the company’s stores are in the Carolinas, but it also has outlets in nine other states, including FL, GA and PA.
Alpine Confections, Inc. (801-756-6916) is planning to open approximately 30 Fannie May stores, some in former Fannie May locations, throughout the Chicago, IL area by the end of the year. Alpine acquired the Fanny Farmer and Fannie May brands from Archibald Candy Corporation in 2003. Alpine products include boxed and molded chocolates, hard candy, taffy, and decorative candy products.
Famous Dave’s of America, Inc. (952-294-1300) is planning to open a Famous Dave’s BBQ restaurant in Fruitport Township, MI on a land area of 1.52 acres at the Lakes Mall. The company operates and franchises approximately 90 barbecue restaurants throughout more than 20 states, primarily IL, MI and WI. Most restaurants resemble 1930s-era roadhouse shacks, although others follow the decor of a hunting lodge or a Chicago-style blues club featuring live music. Famous Dave’s owns about 40% of its restaurants and franchises the rest.
Subway (203-877-4281) is planning to open 3,300 restaurants this year. So far this year, the chain has opened more than 700 restaurants and another 1,600 locations are in various stages of development. The company currently operates 21,000 locations throughout 74 countries.
Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8000) is planning to open a Chick-fil-A restaurant at 2089 Olympic Parkway in Chula Vista, CA during August. The company also is planning to open a restaurant in Oceanside, CA later this year. Chick-fil-A currently operates more than 1,140 restaurants throughout 37 states and Washington, DC.
AMC Theatres (816-221-4000) is planning to open a freestanding 14-screen theater at Northlake Mall located at the intersection of Interstate 77 and Reames Road in north Mecklenburg, NC. Opening is slated for September 2005. The 60,000 sq.ft. theater will seat 2,500. The company owns approximately 240 theaters that house about 3,500 screens, 70% of which are in multiplexes and megaplexes. Its theaters are located throughout 27 states and Washington, DC, as well as in Canada, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (817-878-8000) is planning to transform two former Zany Brainy stores in Evesham and Mount Laurel, NJ into Pier 1 Imports outlets. The company also is planning to build a store in Burlington Township, NJ. Pier 1 will close its store on Route 38 in Maple Shade, NJ next month and move into the 10,200 sq.ft. Zany Brainy on Nixon Drive in Mount Laurel during August. The company also is taking over a former Zany Brainy at the Shops at Borders on Route 73 in Evesham. Pier 1 also is proposing a 9,460 sq.ft. store at the Town Crossing Shopping Center on Route 541 in Burlington Township. The company operates approximately 1,100 Pier 1 Imports stores throughout the U.S. and Canada, and about 50 outlets abroad, including The Pier chain in the United Kingdom.
El Pollo Loco, Inc. (949-399-2000) is planning to open franchised restaurants throughout the Denver, CO area. The chain hopes to open its first local restaurant next year and would like to be operating 15 to 20 locations in metro Denver. The company currently operates 314 restaurants, including 136 company-owned and 178 franchisee-owned locations, throughout AZ, CA, NV and TX. Overall, the chain plans to expand nationwide, recently launching a push into the Midwest and the East.
New World Restaurant Group (609-631-7000) recently opened its Manhattan Bakery Café concept in Fountainville, PA. The stores will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will offer an extensive lunch menu that includes a choice of salads, soups and more than 24 freshly made hot or cold sandwiches. In addition, the stores will offer the brand’s updated breakfast menu featuring a variety of egg sandwiches and wraps as well as the traditional assortment of bagels and spreads. A specialty coffee bar will provide espresso-based coffees, such as lattes and cappuccino. Several other existing Manhattan Bagel franchised stores have begun to be remodeled using the new Bakery Café design. There are currently more than 170 franchised Manhattan Bagel locations throughout 15 states, primarily on the East Coast, from FL to MA, as well as in AL, CA and TX. New World Restaurant Group operates owned locations primarily under the Einstein Bros and Noah’s New York Bagel and Chesapeake Bagel Bakery brands. New World currently operates 463 company-owned locations, as well as 223 franchised and 49 licensed locations throughout 32 states and Washington, DC.
McCormick & Schmick’s (503-226-3440) recently opened a McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant in the Denver Technological Center located at 8100 East Union Avenue in Denver, CO. The restaurant will include a bar, oyster bar, two outdoor patios and two private dining/banquet rooms. The company currently operates more than 50 restaurants under the following tradenames: Jake’s Grill, Jake’s Famous Crawfish, McCormick’s & Kuleto’s and Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto, as well as McCormick’s and McCormick & Schmicks. Its restaurants typically range in size from 6,000 sq.ft. to 14,000 sq.ft. and are often located in historical buildings. Overall, the company plans to open restaurants this year in Birmingham, AL; Providence, RI and San Diego, CA.
