Who's Opening & Where Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) signed lease agreements for 24 store locations throughout 16 states, consistent with the company’s previously announced plans to open approximately 60 domestic Best Buy stores during its 2005 fiscal year. The company plans to continue to build its presence in states such as CA, with four new locations, and FL and TX, with three stores each. Best Buy also expects to expand in the Chicago, IL area with three stores. In addition, plans include a flagship superstore in West Hollywood, CA. Stores in new markets include: Yuma, AZ; Aiea, HI; Paducah, KY; Columbia, MO; Findlay, OH; Johnson City, TN and Washington, UT. The company currently operates 600 locations throughout 48 states.
Ross Stores, Inc. (510-505-4400) is planning to open a store in Charlotte, NC during May. The 30,187 sq.ft. store will open at the Tyvola Mall, located at 5335 South Boulevard. Overall, the company is planning to open approximately 75 locations this year.
Mama Fu’s (404-355-5400) is planning to expand throughout the Carolinas, with a focus on Charlotte and Raleigh in NC and Charleston, SC.
IKEA (610-834-0180) is planning to open a store in Davie, FL. The company could begin building a store near the intersection of Interstate 595 and Nob Hill Road next year, with an opening slated for 2006. Plans for the 40-acre site in southern FL could include a 310,000 sq.ft. Ikea with 1,400 parking spaces, plus additional retail shops. The company currently operates 190 stores throughout 31 countries, including 18 locations in the U.S. Ikea plans to open five stores a year in North America during the coming 10 years. Besides Davie, FL, the company is looking to open stores in Atlanta, GA; Bloomington, MN; Brooklyn, NY; Dublin, CA; Frisco, TX; New Haven, CT; Philadelphia, PA; Somerville and Stoughton, MA; Tempe, AZ and a relocation in Houston, TX.
Moe’s Southwest Grill (404-442-8332) is planning to open a restaurant in St. Louis, MO, as well as three other locations in the area. The company also announced plans to expand to Detroit and Ann Arbor, MI; IN and the Kansas City, MO area. Atlanta, GA-based Raving Brands currently has 115 restaurants in operation. The company also is the parent of Planet Smoothie and Mama Fu’s.
Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) is planning to open a 24,000 sq.ft. store at the Hamilton Marketplace, a center located at the intersection of Route 130 and Hamilton Square Road in Hamilton, NJ. Barnes & Noble, Inc. also is planning to open a 29,000 sq.ft. store at The Shops at Tanforan, a center located at the intersection of El Camino Real and Interstate 380 in San Bruno, CA. The company also is planning to open a 26,000 sq.ft. store with a Starbucks at Westwood Village, a center located at 2600 S.W. Barton Street in west Seattle, WA during May of next year. The company currently operates 646 Barnes & Noble bookstores throughout 49 states. It also operates 231 B. Dalton Bookseller stores, primarily in regional shopping malls.
Hooters (770-951-2040) is planning to open a 5,500 sq.ft. or 6,500 sq.ft. restaurant in Denton, TX by the end of this year or early next year. The restaurant’s proposed location is 985 Interstate 35E.
Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc. (802-846-1500) is planning to open four stores in the Austin, TX area. The first will be a 1,200 sq.ft. location at Vintage Plaza in the La Frontera Center at FM 1325 and La Frontera Boulevard in Round Rock, TX. The company also is eyeing a site at MoPac Expressway and Duval Road in Gracy Farms, TX. That opening would be slated for the end of this year. The third location hasn’t been determined, but opening would be expected during mid-2005. The fourth store would be a “PartnerShop,” a program the company set up in 1987 to help local nonprofit organizations. The store will be run by Austin-based LifeWorks, a nonprofit agency that serves at-risk and homeless youth. PartnerShops are Ben & Jerry’s stores that are independently owned and operated by community-based nonprofit organizations.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a 188,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart Supercenter at the intersection of College Corner Pike and Todd Road in Oxford, OH by March 2005.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) announced plans for an aggressive rollout of a new food-heavy store format this year. The new format devotes about 50 percent more shelf space to food products than traditional Target stores. The food offerings resemble more of a supermarket set-up to appeal to the one-stop shopper, though the new concept will not carry the meat and produce found at a SuperTarget store. Also, the company is converting more than 80 existing stores to the new format this year, with more than 130 other locations being retrofitted with features of the new concept.
Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-8100) is planning to open a store in Phoenix, AZ. The store will take over space formerly occupied by HomeBase.
Quaker Steak & Lube Franchising Corp. (724-981-3123) is looking to expand nationwide. The company expects to open 40 restaurants throughout the eastern U.S. during the coming five years. Quaker Steak & Lube is then expected to expand nationally, with a focus on AZ, CA and TX. New locations are currently opening in FL and TN, with a Charlotte, NC site expected next month. The company typically operates 10,000 sq.ft. locations.
Golden Corral Corp. (919-781-9310) is planning to open a 10,330 sq.ft. Golden Corral restaurant in front of Governor’s Square Mall in Clarksville, TN. Overall, the company is expecting to open approximately 36 restaurants this year. Golden Corral Corp. currently operates 470 restaurants, including 352 franchised locations and 118 company-operated sites.
Menard’s (715-832-3344) recently opened its largest store, a 250,000 sq.ft. location, in West Duluth, MN. One new feature in the store is a fenced-in outdoor garden center that offers landscaping supplies, such as mulch, soil and patio pavers. Also new at the location is a combined kitchen cabinet and appliance center featuring several complete kitchen vignettes. In every department, assortments were expanded and aisles widened to make the store more customer-friendly.
Crate & Barrel (847-272-2888) is planning to open its second CB2 store in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL during the summer. The concept, which opened on the city’s north side in January 2000, features contemporary furnishings for urban dwellers at lower price points than the company’s flagship stores.
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet (717-766-6364) is planning to expand by more than half during the coming two years. Ollie’s plans to open five more units this year and 10 additional locations during 2005. The company is looking to open concepts in the 34,000 sq.ft. to 44,000 sq.ft. range. Ollie’s plans to have 34 units in operation by year’s end.
The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) is opening a ground-up Marketplace store as a test of the company’s prospects in expanded general merchandise formats. Marketplace stores are smaller than supercenters, but carry many of the same categories, including apparel, hardlines and home goods. The stores, however, avoid fashion in softlines, relying on basics usually purchased on a replacement basis.
