Who's Opening & Where Meijer, Inc. (616-453-6711) is planning to open nine Meijer stores this year. The company currently operates approximately 160 combination grocery and general merchandise stores; about half are located throughout MI, while the rest are in IL, IN, KY and OH. Its stores, which average 200,000 sq.ft. to 250,000 sq.ft. each, stock about 120,000 items, including Meijer private-label products. Customers can choose from about 40 departments, including apparel, electronics, hardware and toys. Most stores also sell gasoline, offer banking services and have multiple in-store restaurants.
Hartig Drug Co., Inc. (563-588-8700) is planning to open a Hartig Drug store on a land area of five acres at the intersection of Highway 20 and Wacker Drive in Dubuque, IA. Opening is slated for the fall. Area demographics include a population of 140,000 within 10 miles earning $56,250 as the average household income. Area retail includes Best Buy, Target and Kennedy Mall. The store will be located on a property with a 150-room hotel. The company also is planning to open a store at Harbor View, a 230,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Highway 61 and 151 in Dubuque, IA. The company currently operates a chain of about a dozen pharmacies throughout IA, IL and WI.
Movie Gallery, Inc. (334-702-2400) recently opened its 2,500th location on Jackson Street in Jacksonville, TX. The company currently owns and operates 2,482 stores located primarily in the rural and secondary markets throughout North America, including over 200 stores located in Canada.
Quick Chek (908-534-7191) is planning to open a 5,000 sq.ft. store on Route 23 in Franklin, NJ. The site has an average daily traffic count of 25,000 vehicles. Area retail includes Wal*Mart and ShopRite.
Office Depot, Inc. (561-438-4800) is planning to open new Office Depot locations nationwide this year. The company currently has prime surplus locations available. Office Depot sells office supplies at more than 1,000 company-owned and licensed stores worldwide, with about 900 locations in the U.S. In addition to typical office supplies, its stores offer computer hardware and software, furniture, art and school supplies and printing and copying services.
Dick’s Sporting Goods, Inc. (412-809-0100) is planning to open seven stores in the first quarter, and close four Dick’s stores and one Galyan’s store due to the conversion. The company currently operates more than 230 stores throughout approximately 32 states, following the acquisition of rival Galyan’s in mid-2004. The stores contain on average five smaller shops featuring sporting goods, apparel and footwear for leisure pursuits ranging from football, golf and cycling, to hunting and camping.
KooKoo Bear Kids, Inc. (800-475-6909) is an online and catalog marketer of upscale children’s furniture and accessories, which just announced that it opened its first retail store located at The Shops of South Canton on Oak Street in Roswell, GA. The 2,000 sq.ft. store carries all the same furniture, clothing and gifts found on the web site.
Moe’s Southwest Grill, LLC (404-442-8933) signed a franchise deal with LaKee, Inc. to open 19 Moe’s Southwest Grill locations throughout the St. Louis, MO metropolitan area and one additional location in Paducah, KY during the coming six years. The company currently operates 200 restaurants with 800 franchised units signed for 38 states. The restaurants offer standard Tex-Mex favorites, including burritos, quesadillas, and fajitas in a quirky, fun atmosphere. (Menu items are named after TV, movie and pop culture references, such as Art Vandalay, Triple Lindy, and John Coctostan). The chain is owned by Raving Brands, which also runs Sprock’s Planet Smoothie concept.
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open between 15 and 18 stores this year, including four relocations. The company currently operates 160-plus stores throughout 28 states, Washington, DC, Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for about two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,200 items in six lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children called Whole Kids.
Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is converting its stores in Kissimmee and Hialeah, FL to a Hispanic-themed supermarket called Publix Sabor. The stores, located on 1980 East Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee and 1585 West 49th Street in Hialeah, are slated to open next month. The stores will feature expanded offerings in the Hispanic food and grocery categories and be staffed with bilingual associates. The company currently operates approximately 800 stores throughout FL, AL, GA, SC and TN. Publix makes some of its own bakery, deli, and dairy goods, and many stores offer flowers, housewares, pharmacies and banks. The company also operates four “Pix” convenience stores in FL.
Foot Locker, Inc. (212-720-3700) is planning to open up to 100 stores and remodel or relocate 275 stores. The company currently operates nearly 4,000 specialty stores in North America, Australia and Europe, led by Foot Locker. Foot Locker also operates Champs Sports, an athletic wear retail chain and Eastbay, a catalog retailer of athletic equipment and apparel.
OfficeMax, Inc. (630-773-5000) is planning to open an OfficeMax store at Greeley Commons, a center located in Greeley, CO. OfficeMax sells office and computer supplies, paper and office furniture through its nearly 1,000 OfficeMax superstores, as well as via phone, fax, and the company’s Web site.
Gander Mountain Co. (952-830-8700) is planning to open a Gander Mountain store at the River Park Shopping Center located at the intersection of U.S. 59 and The Grand Parkway in Fort Bend, TX. The company also is planning to open stores in Sugar Land, Spring and Beaumont, TX during the spring. The company currently operates 80-plus outdoor sporting goods stores focused on hunting, camping and fishing throughout 14 mainly Midwestern states. In addition to outdoor equipment and related accessories, the stores also sell apparel and footwear, as well as all terrain vehicles and gear.
Virgin Entertainment Group, Inc. (323-935-1500) is planning to open a Virgin Megastore at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, CA during the fall. The store will be an anchor store of the 640,000 sq.ft. center. Virgin Entertainment Group owns and operates about 25 Virgin Megastores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The stores offer music, DVDs, books and video games.
Carvel Corp. (404-255-3250) is planning to open 300 or more Carvel locations nationwide. The company prefers spaces of 1,200 sq.ft. to 1,500 sq.ft. in endcaps or inline spaces in strip centers or outparcels. A drive-thru is preferred. Preferred demographics include a population of 50,000 within three miles. The company currently operates more than 460 franchised and food-service ice cream shops located throughout more than 20 states, primarily in the Northeast, and Puerto Rico. In addition, the company sells ice cream through some 6,300 supermarkets.

The store would include its own gas station and will be situated on a land area of 12.5 acres along Dune Palms Road, just east of a Wal*Mart Supercenter. Opening is slated for next summer. The company currently operates more than 4,800 stores, including approximately 1,475 Wal*Mart stores, 1,750 Wal-Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and ASDA in the United Kingdom, and 540 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the US, but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It also owns nearly 38% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.
Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to expand its stores into China. Best Buy sells consumer electronics, home office products, entertainment software and appliances at over 780 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company operates its stores under the retail banners Best Buy, Future Shop, in Canada, and Magnolia Audio Video, located throughout the western U.S.
