Who's Opening & Where Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a Cabela’s store in Reno, NV. The store will be 150,000 sq.ft. and is slated to open late next year or early 2007. The company also is planning to open a store on a land area of 32 acres at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Louisiana Highway in Gonzales, LA by early next year. The 175,000 sq.ft. store could open as early as next spring. The company currently operates 10 locations. Cabela’s also is planning to open a 230,000 sq.ft. store in Fort Worth, TX; a 185,000 sq.ft. store in Buda, TX and a 150,000 sq.ft. store in Lehi, UT. Also planned are locations in Rogers, MN; Wheat Ridge, CO and in East Rutherford, NJ. The stores include such features as waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities.
Longs Drug Stores Corp. (925-937-1170) is planning to open as many as 30 stores this year. The company currently operates approximately 470 stores throughout the western U.S. and Hawaii. Longs sells higher-margin, front-store items such as cosmetics, food, greeting cards and over-the-counter medications.
Urban Outfitters, Inc. (215-564-2313) is planning to open 30 to 32 stores this year. The company also is looking to open three freestanding Free People wholesale stores this year. The company operates approximately 60 Urban Outfitters stores, mainly in the U.S., but also in Canada and the United Kingdom, selling casual clothes, accessories, gifts, housewares and shoes. The company also operates more than 50 Anthropologie stores. Urban Outfitters’ Free People wholesale division distributes clothing, housewares and gift items to more than 1,100 specialty stores.
Hibbett Sporting Goods, Inc. (205-942-4292) is planning to open as many as 70 stores this year. Hibbett sells sporting equipment, footwear and apparel through approximately 430 stores in small to mid-sized markets in about 20 mostly southeastern states. Hibbett Sports stores, its flagship chain, are located primarily in malls and strip centers. It also operates a handful of larger format stores called Sports & Co. that offer in-store putting greens, basketball hoops and special event appearances by famous athletes. Its Sports Additions shoe stores are in malls that also have Hibbett Sports stores.
Wild Oats Markets, Inc. (303-440-5220) is planning to roll out its new concept, which features a Holistic Health Center and a Discovery Center. The retailer first introduced the format to its 34,000 sq.ft. flagship store in Superior, CO last May. The company currently operates eight of the prototype stores. The Holistic center is set apart from the rest of the store. Typically, the stores occupy spaces of approximately 2,200 sq.ft. The center features a staff, resource center with books and a touch-screen information kiosk. The Discovery Center incorporates a similar concept, but is located in the center of the grocery aisle where it’s home to cooking demonstrations and staffed to answer shopper’s food and health-related questions. Overall, the company is looking to open as many as 21 Wild Oats stores by the end of 2006. Wild Oats operates approximately 100 full-service stores throughout 24 states and British Columbia, Canada. Its stores provide natural, organic, and traditional grocery items, as well as environmentally friendly household products. The stores operate under the Capers Community Market, Henry’s Farmers Markets, Sun Harvest Farms and the Wild Oats Natural Marketplace names.
Sport Chalet, Inc. (818-949-5300) is planning to open Sport Chalet stores in Chandler, Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ. The sporting goods retailer operates approximately 36 stores throughout AZ and CA. The stores are known for carrying specialty products, such as mountain-climbing and scuba gear. Sport Chalet has traditionally specialized in gear for cold-weather sports, such as skiing, but its stores sell brandname shoes, clothes and equipment for many other activities. Shoppers at Sport Chalet can sign up for scuba training and join dive clubs associated with the stores.
Gucci (212-750-5220) is planning to open stores throughout Asia, with expansion throughout India and China.
Food Concepts International (806-785-8686) is planning to open an Abuelo’s Mexican Food Embassy restaurant at Greyhound Commons, a center located at the intersection of 146th Street and U.S. 31 on the Carmel-Westfield, IN border. Opening is slated for next month. The Carmel-Westfield site will be the first in the state of IN and the 24th in the chain. The restaurant will occupy a space of 7,800 sq.ft.
Ruby Tuesday, Inc. (865-379-5700) is planning to open approximately 55 company-owned restaurants this year and anticipates that its franchisees will open approximately 35 Ruby Tuesday restaurants during the same period. The company currently operates and franchises more than 700 casual-dining restaurants throughout approximately 40 states. More than 475 Ruby Tuesday locations are company-owned; most of its franchised units are jointly owned partnerships in which Ruby Tuesday has a minority stake. The company also has a small but growing number of international franchises.
Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) is planning to open as many as 60 stores this year, following its merger with Kmart. Beyond its more than 870 U.S. mall-based stores, Sears operates approximately 1,100 other locations nationwide. The company also operates more than 800 independently owned Sears dealer stores in small towns and about 245 hardware stores, such as Orchard Supply Hardware and Sears Hardware. Sears’ stores sell apparel, tools and appliances, as well as providing home services under the Sears HomeCentral brand. Sears has agreed to be acquired by Kmart Holding Corp.
Donato’s Pizzeria Corp. (614-416-7000) is planning to open as many as 10 restaurants throughout its existing markets during each of the coming three years. The company currently operates 181 Donato’s restaurants, mostly company-owned, along with 10 nontraditional locations.
10 Spot (201-319-1400) is planning to open as many as five stores during the coming 18 months throughout CT; Chicago, IL; MA, NJ, NY, PA, RI and Washington, DC. The stores occupy spaces of 4,000 sq.ft. to 6,000 sq.ft. Preferred cotenants include Wal*Mart or ShopRite. Typical leases run 10 to 15 years with two options. The company currently operates 27 locations.
Batteries Plus (800-677-8278) is planning to open approximately 30 stores this year. The stores typically occupy spaces of 1,500 sq.ft. to 1,800 sq.ft. and the merchandise consists of batteries and battery-related accessories. The company currently operates approximately 240 stores. Many of the 140 stores it currently has under development are franchised-owned locations.
