Who's Opening & Where IKEA (610-834-0180) is planning to open a 310,000 sq.ft. store at the Boughton Road exit of the Interstate 355 North-South Tollway in Bolingbrook, IL. Other features include a Children’s IKEA area in the showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas throughout the store. The company also is planning to open a store at a former shipyard location in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, NY. This will be the first retail store to be opened by IKEA in New York, NY. The company recently received approvals to build a three-story, 346,000 sq.ft. mega store on the property. It will be IKEA’s largest store in America. The company also is planning to open a store in Canton Township, MI. Opening is slated for summer 2006. The store will be the company’s 28th in the U.S. and fourth in the upper Midwest, joining stores in Schaumberg, IL; Bloomington, MN and Bolingbrook, IL. The Canton store will feature four model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised children’s play area, as well as a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties and American dishes. IKEA currently operates 210 stores throughout 32 countries. Other stores slated to open in the U.S. this year include locations in Atlanta, GA; Dublin and West Sacramento, CA; Frisco, TX; and Somerville and Stoughton, MA.
Ultimate Franchise Systems, Inc. (407-333-8998) is planning to open several Sobiks Sub Shop locations during the coming six months. Sobiks Cafes are designed to be placed in downtown office buildings and suburban commercial centers with a minimum of 90% occupancy. The locations are sit-down as well as take-out and delivery restaurants that generally require a smaller footprint to operate. The Sobiks Express concept is tailored for convenience stores food operations. Ultimate Franchise Systems franchises and develops a number of different restaurant concepts and offers management services to growing eatery chains. It has stakes in about 10 different chains, including Central Park, Jreck Subs, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Obee’s Subs and Sobik’s Subs. It also has a stake in Flamers Burgers & Chicken, as well as Famous Food Group, franchisor of Uncle Al’s Famous Hot Dogs and Gator’s Dockside.
Stein Mart, Inc. (904-346-1500) is planning to open eight to nine Stein Mart stores. The company currently operates approximately 260 stores throughout about 30 states and sells women’s, men’s and children’s brand-name clothing at discount prices.
Taco Del Mar Franchising Corp. (206-624-7060) is planning to open 10 Taco Del Mar restaurants during the coming two years throughout northern CA. Taco Del Mar Franchising operates a chain of about 100 quick-service Mexican restaurants in more than 10 western states, Alaska, and Canada. The fresh-Mex eateries specialize in tacos and burritos made with fresh beef, chicken, fish, and veggie fillings. The company will open about 20 new units in Western Canada, co-branded with Mac’s Convenience Stores, and it intends to grow to 160 stores by the end of this year.
Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (908-688-0888) is planning to open Bed Bath & Beyond stores at the former Clarence Mall, located at the intersection of Main Street and Transit Road in Buffalo, NY and at the McKinley Mall in Blasdell, NY. The company currently operates approximately 660 stores throughout 44 states and Puerto Rico. The stores offer domestics, such as bed linens, bathroom and kitchen items, small household appliances, picture frames and more. The company looks to open about 70 or more stores per year.
Famous Dave’s of America, Inc. (952-294-1300) is planning to open a 6,000 sq.ft. Famous Dave’s BBQ restaurant on Route 347 in Smithtown, NY. Famous Dave’s of America operates and franchises approximately 110 barbecue restaurants throughout more than 20 states, primarily IL, MN and WI. The eateries serve St. Louis-style ribs, Georgia chopped pork and Texas brisket. Famous Dave’s owns about 40% of its restaurants and franchises the rest.
Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Inc. (510-594-2100) is planning to open 20 to 25 Peet’s Coffee & Tea locations this year. The company currently operates approximately 90 coffee shops throughout seven states and offers more than 30 types of coffee, including more than 20 blends. Its teas run the spectrum from India black to herbal blends. The stores also offer items such as biscotti, mugs and brewing equipment. Most of the company’s outlets are located throughout CA, while others can be found in CO, IL, MA, OR, TX and WA. The company also sells its coffee wares through retail grocery stores, including Safeway and Whole Foods.
The Cheesecake Factory, Inc. (818-871-3000) is planning to open as many as 18 Cheesecake Factory restaurants during the year, including two Grand Lux Café locations. Two additional restaurant openings are currently planned for the third quarter and nine openings are currently scheduled for the fourth quarter. The company currently operates more than 90 casual-dining restaurants, offering about 200 menu items ranging from sandwiches and salads to steaks and seafood. Each restaurant has a unique design. In addition to its flagship concept, the company operates five Grand Lux Cafes, licenses three bakery cafes, and sells its cheesecakes to grocery stores and foodservice operations.
Claire’s Stores, Inc. (954-433-3900) is planning to open more locations throughout Spain during the latter half of this fiscal year or during Fiscal 2007. Three leases have also been signed for stores in Holland, with opening dates planned for later this year. The stores will be located in the cities of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen. Claire’s operates about 3,000 boutiques, primarily in malls, that include Claire’s, The Icing, Bijoux One and Cleopatre. The chain operates in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and the Virgin Islands.
Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is planning to open an 80,000 sq.ft. Nordstrom store at Waterside Shops at Pelican Bay in Naples, FL. The store will encompass two levels and is slated to open during Fall 2007 or Spring 2008. The company also is planning to open a store at the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens, FL during March 2006, and at Aventura Mall in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale, FL area in the fall 2007. Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes, and accessories through approximately 95 Nordstrom stores and about 50 Nordstrom Rack outlet stores in about 25 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and about 35 Façonnable boutiques, which are located primarily in Europe, and it sells goods online and through catalogs.
