Who's Opening & Where Von Maur, Inc. (563-388-2200) is planning to open a Von Maur store at the Polaris Fashion Place, a center located in Columbus, OH. The 140,000 sq.ft. space was formerly occupied by Lord & Taylor. Opening is slated for the fall. Von Maur currently operates more than 20 upscale department stores throughout eight U.S. states, including IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN and NE.
Big Al’s (888-824-4257) recently opened an 18,000 sq.ft. supercenter location in Tamarac, FL. The Canadian chain of aquarium stores also is planning to open two more locations throughout FL, as well as franchises nationwide. Throughout Canada, Big Al’s currently operates 20 supercenters, three corporate stores and 17 franchises in five of the 10 provinces, with most situated throughout Ontario. The Tamarac location will be the company’s flagship store and features a 12-foot, 5,000-gallon round predator tank and coral reef, a fiber-optic tunnel lined with two 20-foot long freshwater and saltwater bow-front display tanks, with a combined 8,000 gallons; and a 40,000-gallon livestock display room dubbed The Deep. The store also will host weekly public shark-feeding demonstrations.
Ryan’s Restaurant Group, Inc. (864-879-1000) is planning to open six restaurants by the end of the year, including two potential relocations. All six restaurants are currently under construction, which would give the company 15 openings during the year. For 2006, the company is looking to open nine restaurants, including three potential relocations. Ryan’s Restaurant Group owns approximately 300 Ryan’s restaurants primarily in the Midwest and southeastern U.S., as well as nearly 50 Fire Mountain locations. Its family-oriented eateries offer a variety of steaks, as well as chicken, seafood and burgers. The chain is known for its Mega Bar buffet, which features salad items, soups, cheeses, hot meats, vegetables, hot rolls, and fresh-baked cookies and other desserts, all served from self-service islands scattered throughout the dining area.
Conn’s, Inc. (409-832-1696) is planning to open three Conn’s stores throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area. The retailer sells appliances and consumer electronics through approximately 50 stores throughout LA and TX. Conn’s also offers home office equipment, lawn and garden products, and other home products such as bedding.
Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) is planning to open five Sears Essential stores this year. Sears Essential stores are a smaller version of the Sears Grand superstore format. Both combine the traditional Sears department store box setting with convenience and discount items. The concept is part of Sears’ strategy to move away from shopping malls to freestanding sites. Beyond its more than 870 U.S. mall-based stores, Sears has about 1,100 other locations nationwide. The company operates more than 800 independently owned Sears dealer stores in small towns and about 245 hardware stores, such as Orchard Supply Hardware and 160 Sears Hardware stores. Sears’ stores sell apparel, tools, and appliances, as well as providing home services under the Sears HomeCentral brand.
American Dry Cleaning Centers, Inc. (800-949-6016) is looking to open stores at the following locations throughout FL: Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach, Wellington, Lake Worth, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Rivera Beach and Delray Beach. The company is seeking sites from 2,000 sq.ft. to 2,450 sq.ft.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is planning to open as many as 10 Lowe’s Home Improvement stores throughout the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area. Overall, the company is looking to open as many as 100 stores throughout Canada. Lowe’s currently operates more than 1,100 home improvement stores throughout the U.S. The company’s stores sell more than 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances and furniture.
Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open approximately 90 Petco stores and remodel 50 locations this year. The company currently operates about 655 stores throughout more than 40 states and Washington, D.C. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry some 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars, leashes, grooming products, toys, and animal habitats; the stores also offer grooming, obedience training, vet services, and sponsors pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations.
The Steak n Shake Co. (317-633-4100) is planning to open between 18 and 24 restaurants this year and at least 26 company-owned restaurants during fiscal 2006. The company currently operates and franchises nearly 430 Steak n Shake restaurants throughout approximately 20 states in the Midwest and Southeast. The full-service chain’s menu features its hallmark steakburgers and milkshakes, as well as fries, chicken sandwiches and chili. About 60 units are operated by franchisees, while the rest are company-owned.
Spartan Stores, Inc. (616-878-2000) is looking to expand one store, complete store remodels and/or merchandise resets at 10 to 13 additional locations and begin construction on one or two stores during fiscal 2006. The supermarket chain currently operates approximately 54 locations throughout MI under the Family Fare Supermarkets and Glen’s Markets banners. Spartan also operates about 19 deep-discount drug stores called The Pharm throughout MI and OH The company is also a grocery wholesaler, distributing more than 40,000 food and general merchandise items to more than 300 independent grocery stores.
Famous Dave’s of America, Inc. (952-294-1300) is planning to open a 6,000 sq.ft. Famous Dave’s BBQ restaurant on Route 347 in Smithtown, NY. Famous Dave’s of America operates and franchises approximately 110 barbecue restaurants throughout more than 20 states, primarily IL, MN and WI. The eateries serve St. Louis-style ribs, Georgia chopped pork and Texas brisket. Most restaurants resemble 1930s-era roadhouse shacks, although others follow the decor of a hunting lodge or a Chicago-style blues club featuring live music. Famous Dave’s owns about 40% of its restaurants and franchises the rest.
Eddie Bauer, Inc. (425-755-6100) is planning to open a 4,900 sq.ft. Eddie Bauer store at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie, a center located at the intersection of Illinois Route 6 and U.S. Route 150 in Peoria, IL. The center is currently anchored by Bergner’s, Linens ‘N Things, Border’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Old Navy. The stores sell sportswear, outerwear, and footwear for men, women, and children through more than 400 retail and outlet stores in Canada, Germany, Japan, and the U.S.
Mattress Mall (954-565-4143) is looking to open locations throughout Broward, Palm Beach and Miami/Dade Counties in FL. The company currently operates locations throughout those counties and carries all national mattress brands. The company is looking for spaces of 3,000 sq.ft. to 10,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations, endcaps and inline spaces in power and discount centers. The company will acquire sites, lease or build-to-suit.
Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (415-421-7900) is planning to open West Elm furniture stores. The stores offer modular seating, geometric bookcases and low platform beds. The company opened five West Elm stores this year, and is looking to accelerate its number of store openings in 2006. Currently, the company is looking to open locations on 4th Street in Santa Monica, CA, as well as in Houston, TX; Atlanta, GA and Washington and Princeton, NJ. The company’s retail chains, Williams-Sonoma and larger Grande Cuisine, which offers upscale cookware; Pottery Barn and larger Design Studio, which offers housewares and furniture; and Hold Everything, which offers storage items, sell wares through more than 550 stores throughout 43 states, Washington, DC, and Canada.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 10 Kohl’s stores throughout the Orlando and Jacksonville, FL areas during October. The company currently operates approximately 670 discount department stores throughout 40 states. About a third of its stores are in the Midwest, where Kohl’s continues to grow while rapidly expanding into other markets. The stores offer moderately priced name-brand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares.
LA Fitness (949-255-7403) is planning to open a 45,000 sq.ft. fitness facility at Canyon Crossings, a 90-acre mixed-use center located at the intersection of Interstate 215 and State Highway 60 in Riverside, CA. The fitness center will include a 25-yard lap pool, heated spa, sauna, aerobics room, full circuit training, free weights, over 60 pieces of cardio equipment, a kid’s club and juice bar. This will be LA Fitness’ second location in Riverside. Last year, the company opened a location on Mission Village Drive, near Alessandro Boulevard and Mission Grove Parkway. The company currently owns and operates sports clubs in AZ, CA, CT, FL, GA, NJ, NY, OR, PA and WA. By the end of the year, the company expects to have over 140 clubs in operation.
Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to open Borders Books & Music stores throughout VA at the following locations: a 21,017 sq.ft. store located at the Patrick Henry Mall at the intersection of Interstate 64 and Jefferson Boulevard in Newport News; a 19,750 sq.ft. store at Warrenton Center Shopping Plaza located at the intersection of West Lee Highway and Winchester Station in Warrenton and a 20,000 sq.ft. store located at Winchester Station Shopping Center at the intersection of Pleasant Valley and East Tevis Roads in Winchester. Upon the opening of these stores, Borders will operate 15 stores throughout VA. The company currently operates stores throughout 50 states and in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Singapore. It’s approximately 1,250 retail stores include more than 500 Borders superstores, about 700 mall-based Waldenbooks stores, and more than 35 UK-based Books etc. shops. The stores also sell music, videos and DVDs. |
