Home Depot of Canada Inc. (416-609-0852) is planning to open 11 Home Depot stores across Canada by the end of the this year. Two of the stores will open in Calgary, Alberta, while other locations include Saint John, New Brunswick; Sherbrooke, Quebec and Victoria, British Columbia. Home Depot of Canada currently operates approximately 126 giant warehouse stores throughout 10 Canadian provinces and holds the second spot in the Canadian home improvement market behind RONA, which operates 550-plus stores. The Canadian division of the world’s largest home improvement retailer, U.S.-based The Home Depot, caters to do-it-yourselfers as well professionals in the building trades. The stores also sell appliances. Home Depot first brought its big-box hardware stores to the Canadian market in 1994.

 

Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits (404-459-4450) is planning to have opened 130 locations by the end of this year. A division of AFC Enterprises, Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits is a leading quick-service chicken restaurant chain with more than 1,800 locations nationwide and in more than 22 other countries. Popeyes serves Cajun-style fried chicken, biscuits, po’boys and chicken strips. About 80 locations are company-owned, while the rest are operated by franchisees.

 

Bass Pro Shops, Inc. (417-873-5000) is planning to open a Bass Pro Shops store in Stapleton, CO. The company also is planning to open a Bass Pro Shops store at the Rim Shopping Center located on the east side of Interstate 10, north of Loop 1604, in San Antonio, TX. The company currently operates 25 locations throughout 17 states. The stores typically occupy spaces of 280,000 sq.ft. The cavernous outlets sell boats, campers, equipment, and apparel for most outdoor activities and offer features such as archery ranges, fish tanks, snack bars and video arcades.

 

Sheetz, Inc. (814-946-3611) is planning to open a gas station/restaurant/convenience store at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in Raleigh, NC. The site will include 16 gas pumps, touch screens for customers to order food and drinks, an automated car wash and a restaurant with made-to-order items. Opening is slated for Summer 2006. The company currently operates more than 300 stores throughout six states. Plans for the site also include a fast food and casual dining restaurant. Sheetz stores sell groceries, fountain drinks, baked goods, and made-to-order sandwiches and salads, self-service car washes, as well as discount gas and cigarettes. The company operates locations mostly in small and midsized towns throughout PA, but also in five other states. Overall, the company plans to open 25 stores this year.

 

The Yankee Candle Co., Inc. (413-665-8306) is planning to open a Yankee Candle store in Williamsburg, VA by the end of this year. The 43,000 sq.ft. store will also have a large section that will offer 250,000 candles in more than 150 scents. Yankee Candle’s products are sold by about 15,600 gift shops nationwide, as well as internationally through distributors. The company operates more than 372 namesake stores throughout 42 states, mostly in malls, and sells online and through catalogs.

 

Haverty Furniture Cos., Inc. (404-443-2900) is planning to open Haverty Furniture stores near Castleton Mall in Indianapolis, IN and by the Polaris Mall in Columbus, OH. Two older stores in Shreveport, LA will be replaced with a single, better-located showroom and the company will be expanding its Woodbridge, VA store. The company also is looking to open a store in Austin, TX, as well as the following sites during 2006: Port Charlotte, FL; near Stonecrest Mall in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA; and a new showroom in the Cedar Hill shopping area south of Dallas, TX. The company currently operates approximately 120 showrooms throughout 16 southern and central U.S. states. Havertys is growing by enlarging or replacing smaller stores in high-growth markets.

 

Sport Chalet, Inc. (818-949-5300) is planning to open three Sports Chalet stores throughout AZ, as well as an additional location in southern CA during fiscal 2006. The company also plans to open four to eight stores during fiscal 2007. The sporting goods retailer operates about 40 stores mostly in southern CA and NV. It also has an online shopping site that’s managed by GSI Commerce. The stores are known for carrying specialty products, such as mountain climbing and scuba gear. Sport Chalet has traditionally specialized in gear for cold-weather sports, such as skiing, but its stores sell brand-name shoes, clothes, and equipment for many other activities, too. Shoppers at Sport Chalet can sign up for scuba training and join dive clubs associated with the stores.

 

Hannaford Bros. Co. (207-883-2911) is planning to open a Hannaford Bros. supermarket in Easton, MA. The company currently operates more than 140-plus stores under the Hannaford and Victory Super Markets banners throughout MA, ME, NH, upstate NY and VT. The stores include a large produce section, as well as an expansive meat section and natural food area. About 100 of the Hannaford stores are combination supermarkets and pharmacies. The stores average approximately 49,000 sq. ft.

 

Sparklean Laundry Systems (562-942-1771) is looking to open locations from 1,800 sq.ft. to 5,000 sq.ft. throughout southern CA.

 

Brinker International, Inc. (972-980-9917) is planning to open a Chili’s Grill & Bar restaurant on State Highway 400 in Dawson County, GA. The restaurant is expected to range in size from 4,000 sq.ft. to 6,000 sq.ft. Brinker International operates more than 1,000 Chili’s locations. The restaurants offer southwestern-style dishes, such as fajitas, margarita grilled chicken, and its popular baby back ribs. In addition to Chili’s, Brinker operates the Italian-themed Romano’s Macaroni Grill and the Mexican-flavored On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina. Its smaller chains include Maggiano’s Little Italy, Rockfish Seafood Grill and Corner Bakery Cafe.

 

Texas Roadhouse, Inc. (502-426-9984) is planning to open 23 to 24 company-owned and three to four franchised Texas Roadhouse locations during 2006. Texas Roadhouse operates and franchises more than 190 of its signature steak restaurants throughout more than 35 states. The Southwest-themed eateries serve a variety of hand-cut steaks, ribs, chicken, and seafood, as well as freshly baked bread and other sides but only for dinner. About 100 Texas Roadhouse locations are company-owned.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open an experimental Wal*Mart Supercenter store in Aurora, CO. More than 500 tons of Denver’s Stapleton Airport’s runway, crushed up and recycled, has been used for the store’s foundation. Used vegetable oil from the store’s deli and used motor oil from the store’s Tire and Lube Express will be burned to help heat the store. The goal for the experimental store is to reduce the amount of energy and natural resources required to operate and maintain stores, reduce the amount of raw materials needed to construct the facility, and substitute, when appropriate, renewable materials. Some of the key experiments include solar and wind power, waste oil boilers, porous pavements, radiant floor heating and unique fabric duct air systems to heat and cool the building efficiently. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8038) is planning to open 77 restaurants by the end of this year, including 60 freestanding locations. The company currently operates approximately 1,200 restaurants and serves chicken entrees, sandwiches, and salads, along with its popular waffle fries and fresh-squeezed lemonade. The chain is made up primarily of mall-based stores, but it also includes freestanding units that offer drive-thru service as well as dine-in seating. Chick-fil-A also licenses its concept to foodservice operators for high-traffic areas, such as schools and airports.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open a Whole Foods Market store in Denver, CO. The company also is opening stores in San Jose, Cupertino, Mountain View, Novato, Oakland and San Francisco, CA. The company operates 176-plus stores throughout 28 states, Washington, DC; and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for about two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,200 items in six lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children, Whole Kids. In addition, the company has moved into the related businesses of nutritional supplements.

 

Cosi, Inc. (847-597-8800) is planning to open 11 company-owned restaurants by the end of the year, as well as 17 locations during 2006. Overall, the company is looking to open approximately 101 company-owned restaurants during the five years between 2005 and 2009. The company owns and operates more than 90 eclectic Cosí cafés throughout approximately 20 states offering premium and specialty coffees and made-to-order sandwiches. Its menu also features breakfast items and salads, soups and desserts. Most of its restaurants also offer dinner and drinks after 5 p.m., while its Cosí Downtown units are primarily located in non-residential business districts and close in the evening. Cosi also offers delivery and catering services and operates a handful of coffee kiosks in Macy’s department stores.

 

Captain D’s, Inc. (615-391-5461) is planning to double its growth for Fiscal 2006 to 40 units, including the chain’s first international operation. Captain D’s is a leading quick-service seafood chain with more than 500 locations throughout approximately two dozen states, primarily in the South, as well as overseas. Its menu features fried and broiled fish, shrimp, and chicken, as well as French fries, hush puppies, and corn on the cob. The company operates more than 300 of its restaurants, while the rest are owned by franchisees.

 

Pacific Sunwear of California, Inc. (714-414-4000) is planning to open more than 100 locations per year. At its Pacific Sunwear stores and d.e.m.o. stores, focusing on hip-hop inspired urban fashion, the company targets trendy young men and women with name-brand casual apparel such as jeans, shorts, T-shirts, swimwear, shoes and accessories. Stores feature clothing by JNCO, Billabong, Paul Frank, Dickies, and Fox Racing, as well as footwear by hip oldster Vans, among others. PacSun also sells its own private-label merchandise. The rapidly expanding company now operates two Web sites and approximately 1,000 stores throughout 50 states and Puerto Rico under the names PacSun, PacSun Outlet and d.e.m.o.

 

The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) is planning to open more locations by the end of this year. The company currently operates more than 3,750 stores nationwide under more than two dozen banners, including approximately 2,530 supermarkets and multi-department stores. It also runs nearly 800 convenience stores under names such as Quik Stop and Kwik Shop. Kroger’s Fred Meyer Stores subsidiary operates more than 125 supercenters, which offer groceries, general merchandise, and jewelry in the western US.

 

Friendly Ice Cream Corp. (413-543-2400) is planning to open four franchised restaurants by 2010. Long-term, the company is looking for its largest franchisee to open 33 restaurants during the next 27 years. The company owns approximately 350 Friendly’s family-style restaurants throughout 16 states, many of them in the Northeast, and franchises about 190 others, mostly in Mid-Atlantic and the northeastern states. Friendly is known for its desserts, but the restaurants also serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, mostly general fare such as sandwiches, salads, and burgers. The company also makes ice cream and other frozen treats that are distributed through some 4,500 supermarkets and other retail sites.

 

Frisch’s Restaurants, Inc. (513-961-2660) is planning to open a Golden Corral restaurant in Morgantown, WV this month. When the Morgantown location is completed, the company will be operating 34 Golden Corral locations and 89 company-owned Big Boy restaurants, in addition to 28 franchised Big Boy restaurants. Frisch’s Restaurants is a franchiser of Big Boy family restaurants with locations throughout IN, KY and OH. While famous for its double-decker hamburgers, Big Boy also offers chicken, roast beef, pasta, beef and seafood dinners, as well as a breakfast bar that converts to a soup and salad bar at lunch.

 

Rite Aid Corp. (717-761-2633) is planning to open between 800 and 1,000 Rite Aid stores by 2010. The company will concentrate on five key markets, including Baltimore, MD; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY and Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to opening stores, the company also is looking to grow through acquisitions in those markets. The company currently operates approximately 3,350 drugstores throughout 28 states and Washington, DC. Rite Aid stores fill prescriptions and sell health and beauty aids, convenience foods, and other items, including more than 2,400 private-label products.

 

 

Wild Oats Markets, Inc. (303-440-5220) is planning to open a Wild Oats Market store in the Phoenix, AZ area next year. Overall, the company has 16 leases or letters of intent signed for new stores during 2006 and 2007. Wild Oats operates approximately 110 full-service stores throughout 24 states and British Columbia, Canada. Its stores provide natural, organic, and traditional grocery items, as well as environmentally-friendly household products. The stores operate under the Capers Community Market, Henry’s Farmers Markets, Sun Harvest Farms and the Wild Oats Natural Marketplace names. It also has bakeries, coffee and juice bars and massage therapists in most stores.

 

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (303-846-6000) is looking to open seven to nine franchised restaurants during the fourth quarter. The company operates a chain of more than 290 casual-dining restaurants throughout approximately 30 U.S. states and Canada that specialize in high-end hamburgers. Its menu features more than 20 different twists on the American classic, including the Pot Roast Burger, the Banzai Burger and the jalapeño-charged Five Alarm Burger. Red Robin also serves chicken, seafood, and turkey burgers, as well as vegetarian alternatives. Non-burger entrées include salads, pasta, seafood, and fajitas.

 

99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) is planning to increase its store opening growth during 2006 by approximately 10%, which is approximately 23 stores. During 2007, the company plans to increase it store opening growth rate to at least 15% as the stores expand into new markets as part of a long-term strategy. With approximately 226 stores, the company sells name-brand and private-label food and beverages, health and beauty aids, household goods, toys and more. Most of the company’s stores are located throughout southern CA, but there are also a few in central CA, Las Vegas, NV; Phoenix, AZ and TX. The firm’s Bargain Wholesale unit distributes discounted merchandise to retailers, distributors and exporters.
