The company is continuing its national expansion with growth opportunities in enclosed malls, lifestyle centers, power centers and outlets. Back Yard Burgers, Inc. (901-367-0888) is planning to open six franchised locations by the end of the year. In addition, the company entered into an agreement to acquire four restaurants from an existing franchisee. The company operates and franchises more than 171 of its signature fast food restaurants throughout approximately 20 southern and midwestern states. The eateries are known for their made-to-order charbroiled hamburgers from 100% Black Angus beef. Back Yard Burgers’ menu also includes chicken sandwiches, chili, milkshakes, salads and cobbler. Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is planning to open a Nordstrom store at Partridge Creek Fashion Park, a 600,000 sq.ft. center located in Clinton Township, MI. Nordstrom will build a new, two-level store with a GLA of approximately 129,000 sq.ft. Opening is slated for Spring 2008. Partridge Creek will have a multiplex cinema, several sit-down restaurants and up to 90 specialty retailers. The center is situated on a land area of 55 acres along the south side of M-59. Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes, and accessories through approximately 95 Nordstrom stores and about 50 Nordstrom Rack locations throughout about 25 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and about 35 Façonnable boutiques, primarily in Europe, and it sells goods online and through catalogs.
10 Spot (201-319-1400) is looking to open sites from 4,000 sq.ft. to 9,000 sq.ft. throughout CT; Chicago, IL; MA, NJ, NY, PA, RI and Washington, DC. The company prefers to tenant in strip and power centers, malls and downtown storefronts. Preferred demographics include a population of 100,000 within three miles earning $40,000 as the average household income.
The Cheesecake Factory, Inc. (818-871-3000) is planning to open as many as 18 Cheesecake Factory restaurants during the year, including two Grand Lux Café locations. Two additional restaurant openings are currently planned for the third quarter and nine openings are currently scheduled for the fourth quarter. Fred’s stores carry over 12,000 brand-name, off-brand, and private-label products, including pharmaceuticals, household goods, clothing and linens, food and tobacco items, health and beauty aids, and paper and cleaning supplies. Ollie’s Bargain Outlet (717-657-2300) is planning to expand further into PA. The company currently operates stores throughout DE, MD and PA and recently opened two locations in Pottsville and Belle Vernon, PA, as well as locations in Clearfield, State College and Oil City, PA. Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open approximately 90 Petco stores and remodel 50 locations this year. The company currently operates about 655 stores throughout more than 40 states and Washington, D.C. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry some 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars, leashes, grooming products, toys, and animal habitats; the stores also offer grooming, obedience training, vet services, and sponsors pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations.
Bakers Footwear Group, Inc. (314-621-0699) is planning to open approximately 30 to 32 Bakers Footwear stores this year and is also on schedule to remodel approximately 25 locations to a new format. The mall-based vendor of women’s shoes and accessories operates approximately 220 stores throughout 36 states, with nearly 30 stores doing business under the Wild Pair banner. Bakers Footwear sells dress, casual, and sport shoes, as well as boots, sandals, and accessories, targeting women ages 12 to 29.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is planning to increase its presence in the Gulf of Mexico region. The company also is planning to open as many as 10 Lowe’s Home Improvement stores throughout the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area. Overall, the company is looking to open as many as 100 stores throughout Canada. Lowe’s currently operates more than 1,100 home improvement stores throughout the U.S. The company’s stores sell more than 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances and furniture.

Its approximately 1,250 retail stores include more than 500 Borders superstores, about 700 mall-based Waldenbooks stores, and more than 35 United Kingdom-based Books etc. shops.

Massage Envy (602-889-1090) is planning to open as many as 75 clinics this year. The sites occupy spaces of 2,500 sq.ft. to 3,500 sq.ft. in endcaps.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open between 550 to 600 stores during the coming fiscal year, including 270 to 280 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations and 220 to 230 international retail outlets. The expansion will add 60 million sq.ft. of retail space to the chain’s holdings. The company also is moving towards opening retail banking units in its stores. Wal*Mart also is planning to open 15 to 20 Neighborhood Market locations and 30 to 40 Sam’s Club warehouse stores. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Sally Beauty Company sells cosmetics, hair care and skin care goods, and styling appliances to professionals and consumers through direct sales and more than 3,200 Sally Beauty Supply stores throughout Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the U.S., and the United Kingdom.
Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (540-362-4911) acquired all 61 Autopart International stores and is expected to reopen the locations as Advance Auto Parts stores throughout New England and NY. The company now expects to open as many as 230 stores this year, as opposed to earlier estimates of 150 to 175 stores. Advance Auto Parts currently operates more than 2,600 stores under the Advance Auto Parts and Discount Auto Parts tradenames throughout 39 states; the company’s stores operate under the Western Auto name in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The company is also a partner in online auto parts seller PartsAmerica.com.
OfficeMax, Inc. (630-438-7800) unveiled a new prototype store that highlights small and home-office solutions. The first prototype opened last month in Macedonia, OH, but many more locations are planned nationwide. The design represents the future of OfficeMax’s retail stores. The new design showcases OfficeMax’s solutions by directing customers to boutique-like shopping areas. As customers enter the store, they will be greeted by a central technology “hub.” The stores also offer banners that direct shoppers to their destinations, and a community area that allows customers to check email and have coffee. The company currently operates 930-plus superstores throughout the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The stores offer about 8,000 namebrand and OfficeMax-branded products, including paper, pens, forms and organizers, as well as office furniture and a wide range of technology products. OfficeMax also provides printing and document services through its CopyMax store-within-a-store. Three leases have also been signed for stores in Holland, with opening dates planned for later this year. The stores will be located in the cities of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen. Claire’s Stores offers such items as costume jewelry, handbags, and hair bows typically priced from $2 to $20. Claire’s operates about 3,000 boutiques, primarily in malls, that include Claire’s, The Icing, Bijoux One and Cleopatre. The chain operates in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and the Virgin Islands.
Max & Erma’s Restaurants, Inc. (614-431-5800) is planning to open 10 Max & Erma’s locations throughout Las Vegas, NV. Lenny’s Franchisor, LLC (901-753-4002) is planning to open 15 Lenny’s Sub Shop locations along the Gulf Coast region in AL, FL and MS. The company recently announced a development agreement with the franchisees of a Lenny’s Sub Shop in Mobile, AL, Brady & Brady Consulting, which plans to develop the 15 restaurants.
