Who's Opening & Where


Australian Homemade (212-209-1190) is planning to open four to six locations throughout the U.S. this year, with a focus on Chicago, IL; New York, NY and Washington, DC. The 58-unit chain serves 19 flavors of ice cream and sorbets. Each store makes the ice cream and sorbets on the premises and also serves coffee, espresso drinks and milkshakes. The company also sells gourmet chocolates made in the company’s factory in Amsterdam. Australian Homemade expects to be operating 300 stores nationwide by 2009.

 

Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a 185,000 sq.ft. Cabela’s store near the intersection of Interstate 94 and Minnesota Highway 101 in Rogers, MN. The store will be situated on a land area of 40 acres. It will be Cabela’s third store in MN. The company currently operates 10 locations nationwide, but is located mainly throughout the Midwest. The stores are as large as 250,000 sq. ft. and include such features as waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums, and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities.

 

Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc. (804-379-7300) is planning to open a Ukrop’s Super Market in Roanoke, VA this Fall. The company currently operates approximately 30 Ukrop’s Super Markets, a Central Bakery and Kitchen and Joe ’s Market, a new format featuring gourmet and specialty foods.

 

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) is planning to open a 1,200 sq.ft. Starbucks coffee shop at Northampton Crossings Shopping Center, a 207,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Route 248 and 33 in Easton, PA. Opening is slated for this month. The company also is looking to open a 1,500 sq.ft. Starbucks shop in Flint, MI. The company currently operates and licenses more than 8,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas and CDs. Starbucks operates more than 5,200 of its shops in five countries, mostly in the U.S., while licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains throughout the U.S., with more than 100 shops.

 

Firehouse Restaurant Group, Inc. (904-886-8300) is planning to open 100 to 110 Firehouse Subs locations this year, with a focus on Atlanta, GA and Palm Beach/Broward County, FL. The company also is starting to open locations in Dallas, TX, which is expected to be a 100-store market. During the coming several years, Firehouse Subs is looking to expand into the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Midwest. The company currently operates and franchises 175 sub shops nationwide.

 

Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurant on Route 109 in Sanford, ME. The company currently operates more than 1,625 Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar locations across the U.S. and in nine other countries. Its eateries are primarily freestanding units. The company owns and operates nearly 25% of its restaurants; the rest are franchised.

 

H-E-B Grocery (210-938-8000) is planning to open an H-E-B Plus supermarket in Austin, TX later this year. The company currently operates 300 locations.

 

Bear Rock Foods, Inc. (919-859-6610) is planning to open locations in King of Prussia and Easton, PA; Columbus, OH; Wilmington, NC; Parker, CO; Austin, TX; Leominster and Reading, MA and Columbia, SC. Including those locations currently under construction, the company is looking to open a total of 20 restaurants this year. Other locations include Phoenix, AZ; Fort Worth, TX; Chicago, IL; Toledo, OH; Wichita, KS and Roseland, NJ. The company currently operates more than 30 Bear Rock Cafes. Customers can create their own sandwiches by choosing from various deli meats, condiments, and freshly made specialty breads, such as sunflower seed and ciabatta. Additional menu items include soups, salads, and other sandwich picks, with names such as Bear Cristo, The Moose, Sasquash and Reuben’s Peak. Most stores are open only for lunch and dinner, but some locations also offer breakfast pastries, such as cinnamon rolls, bagels and, of course, bear claws.

 

Hancock Fabrics, Inc. (662-842-2834) is planning to open seven to 10 stores during the first quarter of this year. The company currently operates 435 stores throughout 42 states.

 

Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is planning to open a 28,000 sq.ft. Publix supermarket at the intersection of State Road A1A and 16th Road in Flagler, FL. The company currently operates 849 stores, including 626 throughout FL. The company also operates locations throughout AL, GA, SC and TN. Publix makes some of its own bakery, deli, and dairy goods and many stores offer flowers, housewares, pharmacies and banks. The company also operates four Pix convenience stores throughout FL.

 

Lucille Roberts Health Clubs For Women (212-734-0500) is planning to open locations of 1,500 sq.ft. or from 7,000 sq.ft. to 9,000 sq.ft. in strip and power centers throughout New York, NY and Philadelphia, PA.

 

Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. (314-423-8000) is planning to open 25 to 30 Build-A-Bear locations during 2005. The company currently operates 162 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada and hopes to grow to 350 stores. The company also is planning to open Friends 2B Made stores, which allow customers to make their own dolls.

 

Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture (508-286-4000) is planning to open a superstore in Braintree, MA. The company has acquired a 50,000 sq.ft. building on a land area of 3.25 acres on Wood Road for its store. Opening is slated for early this year. The company currently operates locations throughout MA in Everett, which is now a clearance and bedding center, Norton, Raynham, Saugus, Westboro and Weymouth. The company also operates a store in Nashua, NH.

 

IKEA (610-834-0180) is planning to open a 346,000 sq.ft. IKEA superstore off Route 24 on an extension of Stockwell Drive near the Stoughton-Avon, MA line. The two-story structure will span an area the size of four football fields. Opening is slated for late this year. The store will include a 300-seat cafeteria, more than 50 room settings on its 126,000 sq.ft. second floor and a large warehouse-style self-serve furniture section. The company currently operates 200 furniture and housewares stores throughout 31 countries. The company also is planning to open stores in Atlanta, GA; Bolingbrook, IL; Brooklyn, NY; Canton, MI; Dublin and West Sacramento, CA and Frisco, TX.

 

Golf Galaxy, Inc. (952-941-8848) is planning to open between 12 to 15 Golf Galaxy stores during its 2005 fiscal year, which begins in March. Golf Galaxy is slated to open a store in San Antonio, TX this month. The store will be the first in a multi-store plan for TX. Golf Galaxy owns and operates a chain of 49 specialty stores that offer golf equipment, accessories, apparel and golf services in an interactive store environment designed to provide customers with pro shop service.

 

Ruby Tuesday, Inc. (865-379-5700) is planning to open approximately 55 company-owned restaurants this year and anticipates that its franchises will open approximately 35 Ruby Tuesday restaurants during the same period. The company currently operates and franchises more than 700 casual-dining restaurants throughout approximately 40 states. More than 475 Ruby Tuesday locations are company-owned; most of its franchised units are jointly-owned partnerships in which Ruby Tuesday has a minority stake. The company also has a small but growing number of international franchises.

 

Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (908-688-0888) is planning to open a 30,000 sq.ft. Bed Bath & Beyond store at the Great South Bay Shopping Center, a 500,000 sq.ft. center located on Route 27A in West Babylon, NY. Opening is slated for later this year. The space was formerly occupied by Sweezy’s Department store. Cotenants at the center include Marshalls, Old Navy, JoAnn Fabrics, Ann Taylor Loft, Bath & Body Works and The Children’s Place. Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. currently operates more than 600 stores nationwide, which range in size from 30,000 sq.ft. to 50,000 sq.ft.

 

Belk, Inc. (704-357-1000) is planning to expand its presence throughout NC. The company recently took over four Proffitt’s stores by assuming the leases from Proffitt’s parent company, Saks, Inc. Belk will acquire the leasehold agreements and certain store fixtures and equipment and will begin operating the stores by March. The properties include a 90,000 sq.ft. location at the Colonial Mall in Greenville; an 80,000 sq.ft. store at the Golden East Crossing Mall in Rocky Mount; a 50,000 sq.ft. store at the Vernon Park Mall in Kinston and a 52,000 sq.ft. in the Berkeley Mall in Goldsboro. The company currently operates 225 stores across the southeastern U.S., including 75 stores throughout NC. The stores offer mid-priced brand-name and private-label apparel, shoes, cosmetics, gifts and home furnishings.

 

McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurants, Inc. (503-226-3440) is planning to open a McCormick & Schmick’s restaurant on the ground floor of the Hilton Hotel at the intersection of Illinois and Market Streets in Indianapolis, IN. It will be the company’s first restaurant in the city. McCormick & Schmick owns and operates approximately 50 upscale casual-dining spots that specialize in fish and other seafood dishes. Located throughout 20 states, the restaurants operate primarily under the McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant brand, while other locations carry such names as M & S Grill, McCormick’s Fish House & Bar and Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto. Each restaurant offers regionally distinct menu items and décor.
