Who's Opening & Where Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open an Applebee’s restaurant in Palm Desert, CA this month. The 4,700 sq.ft. restaurant will be located at the intersection of Frank Sinatra Drive and Cook Street. The company currently operates approximately 1,600 restaurants throughout 49 states and 10 countries.
CKE Restaurants, Inc. (714-745-7500) is planning to open as many as 25 Carl’s Jr. restaurants throughout Singapore and Malaysia during the coming eight years. The company currently operates more than 3,200 locations, including Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s and La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill. CKE also owns Green Burrito, a small fast-food Mexican chain. Many of the company’s restaurants are located throughout CA and other western states; its Hardee’s outlets operate primarily in the Midwest and Southeast. CKE owns and operates more than a third of its restaurants; the rest are operated by franchisees.
Sharper Image Corp. (415-445-6000) is planning to open 26 Sharper Image stores during the fiscal year. The company currently operates approximately 150 stores nationwide.
Pizza Gallery & Grill (321-259-8852) is planning to open a 5,500 sq.ft. restaurant at The Avenue Viera shopping center in Viera, FL. Opening is slated for next month. The company currently operates a location on North Wickham Road in Melbourne, FL.
The Bombay Co. (817-347-8200) is planning to open 54 stores this year, with 44 of those being transfers of mall units into open-air centers. The company also plans to expand its BombayKIDS concept. The company currently operates approximately 500 stores nationwide and in Canada.
Burger King Corp. (305-378-3000) is planning to open as many as 50 Burger King restaurants throughout Sao Paulo, Brazil during the coming five years. The company currently operates more than 11,000 restaurants throughout all 50 states and in 62 countries and territories worldwide.
Atlanta Bread Co. (770-432-0933) is planning to open 25 stores throughout the Northeast during the coming years. The company currently operates 160 locations throughout mainly southern states.
Gap, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to expand its Banana Republic concept into Japan. The stores are scheduled to open in various Tokyo shopping areas during the Fall, with additional stores opening in the spring of 2006. The company currently operates more than 3,000 stores worldwide. Other chains include GapKids and babyGap.
Staples, Inc. (508-253-5000) is planning to open as many as 48 Staples stores throughout the Chicago, IL area early next year. The company sells office products, furniture, computers and printing and photocopying services at more than 1,500 Staples and Staples Express stores. Most of the stores are located in the U.S. and Canada, but Staples also has stores in Belgium, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. (757-321-5000) is planning to open locations throughout WA, with an emphasis in the western part of the state. The company currently operates more than 2,600 stores throughout 47 states. The stores range in size from 8,000 sq.ft. to 18,000 sq.ft.
OfficeMax, Inc. (216-471-3441) is planning to open a 20,000 sq.ft. OfficeMax store at The Shops at Greenridge, a 600,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Interstate 85, Interstate 385 and Woodruff Road in Greenville, SC. The company currently operates more than 1,000 stores throughout North America. Ross Stores, Inc. (510-505-4400) is also planning to open a Ross Dress For Less store at The Shops at Greenridge. Ross Stores operates a discount clothing chain with more than 640 outlets. The company sells mostly closeout merchandise, including men’s, women’s and children’s clothing at prices below those of department and specialty stores. Ross stores are located in strip centers throughout 26 states, mostly in the western U.S. and Guam.
Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. (314-423-8000) is planning to open 25 to 30 locations this year. The company currently operates 162 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada and hopes to grow to 350 stores. The company also is planning to open Friends 2B Made stores, which allow customers to make their own dolls.
Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) is planning to open a Sonic Drive-In at the end of the month in Ellenton, FL. The company also is planning to open a Sonic on the east side of Interstate 75 in East Manatee. The company currently operates approximately 535 restaurants and franchises more than 2,325 locations throughout 30 states, primarily in the southern U.S. The company also operates locations in Mexico.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse store at Tops Plaza, a center located on Southwestern Boulevard in Buffalo, NY. The space was formerly occupied by Kmart. The company also is planning to open a 170,000 sq.ft. Lowe’s Home Improvement Center on a land area of 30 acres at the intersection of Route 6 and Route 209 in Westfall/Matamoras, PA. Opening is slated for Spring 2005. The store will be located next to Westfall Town Center, a 200,000 sq.ft. center anchored by Kmart and Grand Union. Overall, the company is planning to open 150 stores during 2005 and 150 to 160 stores during 2006. The company currently operates more than 930 superstores throughout approximately 45 states.
IKEA (610-834-0180) is planning to open a 346,000 sq.ft. IKEA superstore off Route 24 on an extension of Stockwell Drive near the Stoughton-Avon, MA line. The two-story structure will span an area the size of four football fields. Opening is slated for late this year. The store will include a 300-seat cafeteria, more than 50 room settings on its 126,000 sq.ft. second floor and a large warehouse-style self-serve furniture section. The company currently operates 200 furniture and housewares stores throughout 31 countries. The company also is planning to open stores in Atlanta, GA; Bolingbrook, IL; Brooklyn, NY; Canton, MI; Dublin and West Sacramento, CA and Frisco, TX.
Worldwide Restaurant Concepts, Inc. (818-662-9800) is planning to open two Pat & Oscar’s restaurants by the Summer and another four locations by the end of 2006. Worldwide Restaurant Concepts operates more than 300 Sizzler locations nationwide, primarily in CA and about 10 other countries. The company also operates more than 100 KFC locations in the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. In addition, Worldwide Restaurant Concepts owns 82% of Pat & Oscar’s.

(615-885-9056) are planning to open locations at TigerTown, a 130-acre mixed-use development located at the intersection of Interstate 85 and Highway 280 in Opelika, AL. Chick-fil-A, Inc. currently operates more than 1,170 restaurants throughout 37 states and Washington, DC. Quizno’s currently operates approximately 3,500 restaurants throughout 15 countries and Logan’s Roadhouse currently operates 112 restaurants throughout 17 states. |
