Who's Opening & Where Red Robin Gourmet Burgers (425-522-4213) is looking to open restaurants nationwide. The restaurants occupy spaces of 6,351 sq.ft. The company currently operates 130 company-owned and 116 franchised locations.
CATO Corp. (704-554-8510) is planning to open 90 stores this year. The stores occupy spaces of 4,000 sq.ft. to 5,000 sq.ft. and prefer to locate in supermarket-anchored strip centers. Area demographics include a population of 20,000. The company currently operates approximately 1,025 women’s apparel specialty stores under the names Cato, Cato Plus, It’s Fashion! and Cato Fashions. Its private-label merchandise includes misses’, juniors’, and plus-sized sportswear, career wear, coats, hosiery, shoes and accessories priced for low- to middle-income females. Cato’s stores are currently located mainly in small-town strip centers throughout 28 states, primarily in the Southeast.
Andrew Geller Shoes (609-412-2249) is planning to open a 2,500 sq.ft. shoe store at The Shoppes at Cornerstone, a 230,000 sq.ft. mixed-use lifestyle center located on New Road in Linwood, NJ. Opening is slated for next month.
Marsh Supermarkets, Inc. (317-594-2100) is planning to expand its lifestyle supermarket and its Arthur’s Fresh Market concepts this year. The lifestyle store offers a unique design with products grouped to enhance menu planning, while the Arthur’s stores are 21,000 sq.ft. and are aimed at small and/or urban markets. The company currently operates approximately 115 Marsh Supermarkets, low-cost LoBill Foods stores and Hispanic grocery store Savin*$ Mercado in central IN and western OH. It also operates about 165 Village Pantry convenience stores in the same area.
Simply Fashion Stores Ltd. (205-951-1530) is looking to open more locations this year. The stores occupy spaces of 3,000 sq.ft. in strip centers, urban/downtown areas, freestanding locations and second generation spaces. Preferred cotenants include supermarkets, major discounters, shoe stores, beauty supply stores, nail salons, variety stores, dollar stores and check cashing stores. The company currently operates 230 stores throughout 21 states and specializes in junior, misses and plus-size fashions, as well as shoes, accessories and related items at price points primarily under $30.
The Steak ‘N Shake Co. (317-633-4100) is looking to open more locations this year. The company prefers sites with approximately one acre with a drive-thru and occupies spaces of 3,880 sq.ft. The company currently operates and franchises more than 425 Steak ‘N Shake restaurants throughout approximately 20 states in the Midwest and Southeast. The company currently operates approximately 160 Stater Bros. Markets, mostly in Riverside and San Bernardino counties in CA. It also has stores in Kern, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.
Donato’s Pizzeria Corp. (614-416-7000) is planning to open as many as 10 restaurants throughout its existing markets during each of the coming three years. The company currently operates 181 Donatos restaurants, mostly company-owned, along with 10 nontraditional locations, such as those open part-time in Nationwide and Value City arenas and three new take-and-bake kiosks, Alla Casa From Donatos, at central OH Kroger supermarkets.
Ark Restaurants Corp. (212-206-8800) is planning to open a Gallagher’s Steakhouse restaurant and separate bar, yet to be named, at the Resorts Atlantic City Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Opening is slated for the Summer. Ark Restaurants owns and operates 22 restaurants and bars, 26 fast-food concepts, catering operations and wholesale and retail bakeries. Nine restaurants are located in New York, NY; nine in Las Vegas, NV and four in Washington, D.C. The Las Vegas operations include three restaurants within the New York-New York Hotel & Casino Resort. In Las Vegas, the company also owns and operates one restaurant within the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Shopping Center and one restaurant at the Neonopolis Center at Fremont Street.
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open 15 to 18 stores this year. The company currently operates approximately 160 stores throughout 28 states, Washington, DC and in Canada and the UK. Whole Foods offers more than 1,200 items in six lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children, Whole Kids.
The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open a 130,000 sq.ft. Home Depot store just west of Highway 395 on Harper Road in Hermiston, WA. Opening is slated for the end of this year. The company currently operates approximately 1,750 stores throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The company also runs more than 50 EXPO Design Center stores with showrooms featuring bath, kitchen, and lighting products.
Gottschalks, Inc. (559-434-4800) is planning to open a Gottschalk’s department store at the Heritage Mall in Albany, OR. The company currently operates more than 60 department stores, mostly in CA, but also in AL, ID, NV, OR and WA. It also sells larger-sized women’s clothing in nearly a dozen Village East stores.

Nearly 75% of the company’s stores are in the U.S., but Wal-Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns nearly 38% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.
Wegman’s Food Markets, Inc. (800-934-6267) is planning to open a Wegmans supermarket in Hunt Valley, MD this June. The company currently operates approximately 65 stores. Wegmans also runs about 15 Chase-Pitkin Home and Garden home improvement stores and a restaurant.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open six SuperTarget locations this year. The company currently operates 1,313 Target stores and 136 SuperTarget stores nationwide.
Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc. (804-379-7300) is planning to open a Ukrop’s Super Market in Roanoke, VA this Fall. The company currently operates approximately 30 Ukrop’s Super Markets, a Central Bakery and Kitchen and Joe’s Market, a new format featuring gourmet and specialty foods.
