Who's Opening & Where Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to open eight stores throughout Quebec, Canada during the coming year. The company currently operates more than 30 Best Buy stores throughout Canada, but these will be the first stores to open in Quebec this year, with the majority located throughout the Montreal area and one in Gatineau. The stores will open at Galeries d’Anjou Mall in Anjou; Centre Laval in Laval; Carrefour Angrignon Mall in LaSalle; August Avenue in Taschereau; Promenades St-Bruno in St. Bruno; Les Galeries Gatineau in Gatineau and Fairview Pointe Claire Centre in Pointe-Claire. Overall, the company operates a chain of approximately 700 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada offering a wide variety of electronic gadgets, movies, music, computers and appliances. In addition to selling products, the stores offer installation and maintenance services, technical support, and subscriptions for cell phone and Internet services. Best Buy also operates 20 Magnolia Audio Video stores in the U.S. and more than 100 Future Shop locations in Canada.
Caboodle Cartridge (408-988-0064) is planning to open more than 250 locations nationwide this year.
Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) is planning to open five Sears Essential stores this year. Sears Essential stores are a smaller version of the Sears Grand superstore format. Both combine the traditional Sears department store box setting with convenience and discount items. The concept is part of Sears’ strategy to move away from shopping malls to freestanding sites. Beyond its more than 870 U.S. mall-based stores, Sears has about 1,100 other locations nationwide. The company operates more than 800 independently owned Sears dealer stores in small towns and about 245 hardware stores, such as Orchard Supply Hardware and 160 Sears Hardware stores. Sears’ stores sell apparel, tools, and appliances, as well as providing home services under the Sears HomeCentral brand.
Euromarket Designs Inc. (847-272-2888) is planning to open stores throughout Canada, with a focus on Toronto, Ontario and Vancouver, British Columbia, during early 2007. The company currently operates approximately 125 stores, including nearly a dozen outlet stores, throughout 21 U.S. states and Washington, DC. About a third of the merchandise, which includes furniture and housewares, is unique to the chain.
Just Cabinets (717-540-5500) opened a location in State College, PA and is looking to expand into NJ. The ready-to-assemble furniture stores occupy spaces of 15,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 18 stores throughout DE, MD and PA.
Brown Shoe Co., Inc. (314-854-4000) is planning to open 30 outlet stores throughout the U.S. and Canada during the coming two to three years. Brown Shoe owns nearly 920 Famous Footwear stores throughout the U.S., about 360 Naturalizer stores in the U.S. and Canada, and 16 F.X. LaSalle stores around Montreal, Canada. The company also distributes footwear worldwide through about 2,000 retailers, including independent, chain and department stores.
Shoe Carnival, Inc. (812-867-6471) is planning to open between 12 to 14 Shoe Carnival stores during fiscal 2005. The company currently operates more than 250 footwear stores throughout the South and Midwest. Shoe Carnival sells brand-name and private-label men’s, women’s, children’s and athletic footwear. It has been adding about 30 stores annually.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is planning to open as many as 10 Lowe’s Home Improvement stores throughout the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area. Overall, the company is looking to open as many as 100 stores throughout Canada. Lowe’s currently operates more than 1,100 home improvement stores throughout the U.S. The company’s stores sell more than 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances and furniture.
Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open approximately 90 Petco stores and remodel 50 locations this year. The company currently operates about 655 stores throughout more than 40 states and Washington, D.C. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry some 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars, leashes, grooming products, toys, and animal habitats; the stores also offer grooming, obedience training, vet services, and sponsors pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations.
Cheeburger Cheeburger Restaurants, Inc. (239-437-1611) recently opened a 3,000 sq.ft. Cheeburger Cheeburger restaurant at the intersection of Midlothian Turnpike and Courthouse Road in Richmond, VA. The company currently operates more than 30 locations throughout eight mostly southern states.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open more than 600 stores during the coming five years. About a quarter of the stores will be SuperTarget locations, which include groceries. The company currently operates approximately 1,331 Target and SuperTarget stores throughout 47 states.
The Steak n Shake Co. (317-633-4100) is planning to open between 18 and 24 restaurants this year and at least 26 company-owned restaurants during fiscal 2006. The company currently operates and franchises nearly 430 Steak n Shake restaurants throughout approximately 20 states in the Midwest and Southeast. The full-service chain’s menu features its hallmark steakburgers and milkshakes, as well as fries, chicken sandwiches and chili. About 60 units are operated by franchisees, while the rest are company-owned.
Quiksilver, Inc. (714-889-2200) opened its new retail concept in southwestern France. The store will feature both the Andaska and new Quiksilver shop. The company caters to the young and athletic with surfwear, snowboardwear, and sportswear sold under brands Quiksilver, Raisins and Roxy. The firm sells its products in surf, specialty, and department stores worldwide. It also owns 170 of its own stores, including Boardriders Clubs, stores showcasing board sports, Roxy, junior apparel stores, and Hawk Clothing, stores featuring products named for famed boarder Tony Hawk. Quiksilver has expanded its stable to include eyewear, watches, and casual apparel, but the original name and products still capture more than 50% of sales.
Playboy Enterprises, Inc. (312-751-8000) opened its first freestanding Playboy Concept Boutique in the U.S. at The Forum Shops at Caesars in Las Vegas, NV. The 2,000 sq.ft. upscale shopping destination offers a collection of Playboy apparel, accessories and lingerie. The Las Vegas location also will offer one-of-a-kind Playboy memorabilia items, select artwork and vintage product from Playboy’s archives.
Conn’s, Inc. (409-832-1696) is planning to open three Conn’s stores throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area. The retailer sells appliances and consumer electronics through approximately 50 stores throughout LA and TX. Conn’s also offers home office equipment, lawn and garden products, and other home products such as bedding. |
