Adidas USA (800-448-1796) is planning to open 40 stores catering to athletes per month in mainland China this year.

 

Hancock Fabrics (662-365-6324) is looking to open locations nationwide. The fabric stores occupy spaces of 12,500 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft.

 

The Book Market (865-558-8187) is looking to open 100 short-term locations each year, as well as 130 permanent locations. The short-term locations occupy spaces of 8,500 sq.ft. to 50,000 sq.ft. The permanent locations occupy spaces of 3,000 sq.ft. to 7,000 sq.ft. in regional enclosed malls, urban areas and value, power and lifestyle centers.

 

Dollar General Corp. (615-855-4000) is planning to open at least 30 of its Dollar General Market concept stores, which feature a broader selection of groceries than its traditional units, throughout several markets this year. Overall, the company is planning to open 700 stores this year. The company currently operates more than 7,100 discount stores throughout 29 states, primarily in the southern U.S. and eastern U.S. and the Midwest.

 

IKEA Corp. (610-834-0180) is planning to open IKEA stores in Bolingbrook, IL and Canton, MI. The company currently operates 22 stores nationwide. The company also is planning to open an IKEA store at Atlantic Station in Atlanta, GA this year. The company also is planning to open a store in Brooklyn, NY. Another store is planned for Dublin, CA, while southern FL is also under evaluation for a possible location. The stores occupy spaces of 260,000 sq.ft. to 350,000 sq.ft. and require a land area of approximately 15 acres. The company currently operates approximately 200 stores worldwide.

 

Charming Shoppes, Inc. (215-245-9100) is planning to open approximately 81 stores nationwide during fiscal 2006. The majority of store openings will be in the strip center format. By brand, the company is looking to open 60 Lane Bryant stores, six Catherines Plus Sizes stores and 15 Fashion Bug stores. The company currently operates approximately 1,050 Fashion Bug stores selling moderately priced apparel and accessories in girls, juniors, misses and plus sizes. It also owns more than 465 Catherine’s Plus Size stores. Across the U.S., Charming Shoppes serves low- to middle-income women and teens.

 

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-4000) is planning to open a Red Lobster restaurant at Laurel Lakes Centre, a 420,000 sq.ft. center in Laurel, MD. Opening is slated for summer. The company also is planning to open a Red Lobster and Olive Garden at Winchester Station Shopping Center located on Pleasant Valley Road in Winchester, VA. Also, the company is planning to open an Olive Garden at The Mall at Prince George’s in Prince Georges, MD. The company is planning to open a Smokey Bones Barbeque & Grille at Central Park Shopping Center in Fredericksburg, VA. The company currently operates more than 1,300 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Darden also operates a small chain of tropical-themed Bahama Breeze restaurants that offer Caribbean-inspired food.

 

Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-8100) is planning to open 25 stores this year. The company currently operates 449 warehouses, including 333 throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, 63 in Canada, 15 in United Kingdom, five in Korea, three in Taiwan, five in Japan and 25 in Mexico.

 

Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a 185,000 sq.ft. Cabela’s store near the intersection of Interstate 94 and Minnesota Highway 101 in Rogers, MN. The store will be situated on a land area of 40 acres. It will be Cabela’s third store in MN. The company currently operates 10 locations nationwide, but is located mainly throughout the Midwest. The stores are as big as 250,000 sq. ft. and include such features as waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums, and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities.

 

Ross Stores, Inc. (925-965-4400) is planning to open a 28,600 sq.ft. Ross Dress For Less store at Cordova Mall in Pensacola, FL. Overall, the company is looking to open five stores throughout FL this year. The company currently operates 639 locations throughout 26 states. The company sells mostly closeout merchandise, including men’s, women’s and children’s clothing at prices well below those of department and specialty stores. The stores also sell small furnishings, educational toys and games, luggage and gourmet foods in select stores.

 

Blockbuster Inc. (214-854-3000) is planning to test a new store concept called Blockbuster Trading Co. in San Antonio, TX. The concept focuses on the sale and purchase of previously-viewed DVDs. The company currently operates approximately 8,900 company-owned or franchised stores throughout 27 countries, including about 65% in the U.S.

 

Meritage Hospitality Group Inc. (616-776-2600) is planning to open four O’Charley’s restaurants this year. Meritage Hospitality Group also operates approximately 50 Wendy’s hamburger restaurant franchises throughout western and southern MI. Meritage is the nation’s first O’Charley’s franchisee and gives the company exclusive rights in MI.

 

Sonic Corp. (405-225-5000) is planning to open at least 200 Sonic drive-in restaurants in fiscal 2005, including approximately 170 franchised locations. The company currently operates approximately 544 restaurants and franchises more than 2,373 locations throughout 30 states, primarily in the South. Some locations, approximately 125, also offer dine-in seating and drive-thru service. Sonic also has locations in Mexico.

 

Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. (303-664-4000) is planning to open Rock Bottom Brewery restaurants in Indianapolis, IN; Colorado Springs, CO and two throughout the Midwest. The stores range in size from 8,500 sq.ft. to 9,500 sq.ft. in freestanding locations, malls, downtown areas and strip and entertainment centers. The company currently operates 31 locations throughout AZ, CA, CO, IA, IL, IN, MA, MD, MN, OH, OR, PA, VA, WA, WI and Washington, DC.

 

Coach, Inc. (212-594-1850) is planning to open approximately 100 stores during the coming four to five years. The company currently operates 185 locations. In the remainder of its fiscal year, the company plans to open nine stores throughout six markets and is expanding its flagship store in New York, NY at the intersection of 52nd Street and Madison Avenue by 3,000 sq.ft. to 9,700 sq.ft. The company also is expanding stores at other high-profile locations, including locations in Boston, MA; HI and White Plains, NY. Other than its U.S. retail stores, the company operates 81 outlet locations domestically, as well as 107 retail stores in Japan. This year, the company plans to open 10 stores in Japan. 

 

McDonald’s Corp. (630-623-3000) is planning to open approximately 350 McDonald’s restaurants this year. The company currently operates more than 30,000 of its flagship restaurants in more than 100 countries. Almost 30% of its locations are company-owned; the others are run by franchisees. While most of the company’s eateries are freestanding locations, it does have some quick-service kiosk units located in airports and retail areas. McDonald’s also owns the Boston Market and Chipotle Mexican Grill fast-casual chains.

 

Brinker International, Inc. (972-980-9917) is planning to open a 5,700 sq.ft. Chili’s Grill & Bar restaurant at the intersection of West Main Street and Marshall Road in Jacksonville, FL. The restaurants offer southwestern-style dishes, such as fajitas, margarita grilled chicken and baby back ribs. Brinker International currently operates more than 975 locations. In addition to Chili’s, Brinker operates the Italian-themed Romano’s Macaroni Grill and the Mexican On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina restaurant. Its smaller, emerging chains include Maggiano’s Little Italy, Rockfish Seafood Grill and Corner Bakery Cafe.

 

Commerce Bancorp, Inc. (856-751-9000) is planning to open between 55 and 75 Commerce Bank branches this year, including an entry into three new markets, including the Washington, DC area where the company expects to open between 10 and 15 branches this year. It’s the first phase of what the company expects to be a 200-branch operation in the region extending from northern VA to Baltimore, MD. The second new market is CT, which is slated to get many of the 25 to 30 branches targeted for the New York, NY region, not including NJ. For the longer term, Commerce expects to have a total of more than 400 branches throughout CT and NY, with about a quarter of those in the five boroughs of NY. Commerce also plans to make its entry into the Lehigh Valley of PA with about 10 to 15 branches. Also, the company plans to continue its growth in NJ, where up to 15 branches are expected. The company is the parent of Commerce Bank, which has approximately 320 branches throughout DE, NJ, NY and PA.

 

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 95 Kohl’s stores this year. The company currently operates nearly 600 discount department stores throughout 38 states.

 

Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8038) is planning to open four freestanding Chick-fil-A locations throughout AZ and five throughout CA this year, with overall expansion slated to include 78 restaurants, including 60 freestanding locations, 15 licensed, two inline restaurants and one mall location. The company currently operates approximately 1,200 restaurants throughout 38 states and Washington, DC. The chain is made up primarily of mall-based stores, but it also includes freestanding units that offer drive-thru service as well as dine-in seating. The company also has drive-thru only outlets called Chick-fil-A Dwarf House and Truett’s Grill full-service restaurants.

 

Dillard’s, Inc. (501-376-5200) is planning to open a 200,000 sq.ft. Dillard’s store this month at Crestview Hills Town Center in Crestview, KY. Dillard’s currently operates approximately 330 locations throughout 29 states, covering the Sunbelt and the central U.S. Its stores sell name-brand and private-label merchandise with a focus on apparel and home furnishings. Women’s and juniors’ apparel accounts for nearly a third of sales.

 

CATO Corp. (704-554-8510) is planning to open 90 stores this year. The stores occupy spaces of 4,000 sq.ft. to 5,000 sq.ft. and prefer to locate in supermarket-anchored strip centers with a trade-area population of 20,000. The company currently operates approximately 1,025 women’s apparel specialty stores under the names Cato, Cato Plus, It’s Fashion! and Cato Fashions. Its private-label merchandise includes misses’, juniors’, and plus-sized sportswear, career wear, coats, hosiery, shoes and accessories priced for low- to middle-income females. Cato’s stores are currently located mainly in small-town strip centers throughout 28 states, primarily in the Southeast.

 

The Dress Barn, Inc. (845-369-4500) is planning to open 30 to 40 Maurices locations annually during the coming several years. The Dress Barn operates its more than 750 locations in strip malls and outlet centers throughout 40-plus states and Washington, D.C. The retailer’s Dress Barn, Dress Barn Woman and combination stores sell in-season, moderate-to better-quality women’s apparel and accessories at discount prices.

 

Linens ‘n Things, Inc. (973-778-1300) is planning to open approximately 50 Linens ‘n Things stores throughout the U.S. and Canada during fiscal 2005. The company currently operates approximately 500 superstores throughout 45 states and five Canadian provinces.

 

Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to start rolling out the following new concepts: Studio D, a 6,000 sq.ft. store designed as a comfortable environment for exploring and learning about how to use digital equipment. The stores will include classrooms; as well as Escape, a concept targeted at young men interested in gaming and electronic equipment. The company also is planning to open up to eight stores in Quebec, Canada this year. The majority of the stores will be located throughout the Montreal area and one in Gatineau. The first store to open will be at the Marche Central Shopping Centre during the spring. All other stores will open throughout the Fall. The company currently operates more than 780 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company operates its stores under the retail banners Best Buy, Future Shop (in Canada) and Magnolia Audio Video, which are located mainly in the western U.S.

 

Belk, Inc. (704-357-1000) is planning to expand its presence throughout NC. The company recently took over four Proffitt’s stores by assuming the leases from Proffitt’s parent company, Saks, Inc. Belk will acquire the leasehold agreements and certain store fixtures and equipment and will begin operating the stores by March. The properties include a 90,000 sq.ft. location at the Colonial Mall in Greenville; an 80,000 sq.ft. store at the Golden East Crossing Mall in Rocky Mount; a 50,000 sq.ft. store at the Vernon Park Mall in Kinston and a 52,000 sq.ft. store in the Berkeley Mall in Goldsboro. The company currently operates 225 stores across the southeastern U.S., including 75 stores throughout NC. The stores offer mid-priced brand-name and private-label apparel.

 

The TJX Companies, Inc. (508-390-1000) is planning to open a 25,000 sq.ft. A.J. Wright store at Northwest Fashion Square on Brown Deer Road in Milwaukee, WI later this year. The TJX Companies, Inc. owns the two largest off-price clothing retailers in the U.S. with T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. T.J. Maxx sells brand-name family apparel, accessories, women’s shoes, domestics, giftware and jewelry at discount prices at nearly 770 stores nationwide. Marshalls offers a full line of shoes and a broader selection of menswear through more than 690 stores. Its HomeGoods chain of about 200 stores nationwide focuses entirely on home furnishings, while its more than 120 A.J. Wright clothing stores aim for lower-income shoppers located throughout the Northeast and Midwest.

 

Gap Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to open GapBody locations this year. Gap Body specializes in bath and body accessories, sleepwear and under garments for both men and women. The company is opening stores at the following locations: at the Arboretum in Charlotte, NC; Friendly Shopping Center in Greensboro, NC; Mayfair Shopping Center in Commack, NY; South Coast at Crystal Court in Costa Mesa, CA; Girard Avenue in La Jolla, CA; Shops at Somerset in Glastonbury, CT; downtown Naperville, IL; Ridgewood, NJ; Village of Rochester Mall in Rochester, MN; Southbury Green in Southbury, CT and Utica Square in Tulsa, OK. Gap currently operates more than 3,000 stores worldwide. Other chains include GapBody, GapKids and babyGap.
