Country Curtains (413-298-5565) is planning to open stores from 2,800 sq.ft. to 4,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 26 stores throughout the Northeast and the Midwest.

 

Goody’s Family Clothing, Inc. (865-966-2000) is planning to open a Goody’s Family Clothing store in Andalusia, AL this month. Overall, the company is planning to open as many as 35 stores this year. The company currently operates 358 junior department stores throughout 20 states, mainly in strip centers in the southeastern and midwestern U.S. The stores sell clothes, shoes, accessories and gift items.

 

CATO Corp. (704-554-8510) is planning to open 90 stores this year. The stores occupy spaces of 4,000 sq.ft. to 5,000 sq.ft. and typically locate in supermarket-anchored strip centers. Area demographic requirements include a population of 20,000. The company currently operates approximately 1,025 women’s apparel specialty stores under the names Cato, Cato Plus, It’s Fashion! and Cato Fashions. Its private-label merchandise includes misses’, juniors’, and plus-sized sportswear, career wear, coats, hosiery, shoes and accessories priced for low- to middle-income females. Cato’s stores are currently located mainly in small-town strip centers throughout 28 states.

 

PETCO Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open a 19,000 sq.ft. Petco store at the intersection of MacArthur Road and Schadt Avenue in Whitehall Township, PA. The store will feature the company’s new layout called the Pisces layout, which includes a circular race-track-style aisle and a grooming area designed to look like a day spa. The store will also include a “Think Adoption First” resource center. The company operates approximately 655 shops throughout more than 40 states and Washington, DC. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry about 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars, leashes, grooming products, toys and animal habitats; the stores also offer grooming, obedience training, vet services, and sponsors pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations.

 

Old Navy, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to open a 16,850 sq.ft. Old Navy store at Valley Mall in Harrisonburg, VA. Old Navy operates a nationwide chain of family clothing stores, offering items under its own brand name at discounted prices. Products include men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories. Old Navy is a subsidiary of Gap, Inc., which operates approximately 3,000 stores, including Gap, Banana Republic, Gap Body, Gap Kids and babyGap. Gap, Inc. plans to open approximately 175 stores this year, with a focus on Old Navy openings.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a 105,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart on South 11th Street, at the junction with Nebraska 2 and U.S. 75 in Nebraska City, NE. Opening is slated for late 2006 or early 2007. The company also is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter store in Rogers, AR this month. The store will be located in the Pleasant Crossing development off Pleasant Grove Road. The company currently operates more than 4,800 stores, including approximately 1,475 Wal*Mart stores, 1,750 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 540 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It also owns nearly 38% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Duluth Athletic Club (218-720-4445) is planning to open a restaurant at Technology Village in Duluth, MN. The restaurants specialize in homemade bagels, muffins and coffee for breakfast, and sandwiches, salads, soups and homemade bread. The restaurant also has bars.

 

Donato’s Pizzeria Corp. (614-416-7000) is planning to open as many as 10 restaurants throughout its existing markets during each of the coming three years. The company currently operates 181 Donatos restaurants, mostly company-owned, along with 10 nontraditional locations, such as those in Nationwide and Value City arenas and three new take-and-bake kiosks and Alla Casa From Donatos at central OH Kroger supermarkets.

 

Sleep Country Canada (416-242-4774) is planning to open as many as seven stores this year. The stores specialize in the sale of mattresses. The company currently operates 98 company-owned stores in seven regional markets.

 

Jungle Jim’s International Market (513-674-6000) is planning to open a store at Market Street at Millworks, a 500,000 sq.ft. center located in Cincinnati, OH. The stores offer over 110,000 different food items from 78 countries. The stores sell fresh produce, exotic vegetables, wine, beer, spirits, meat, seafood, cheese and confections. The company currently operates one other store in Fairfield, OH.

 

Longs Drug Stores Corp. (925-937-1170) is planning to open or relocate five to 10 Longs Drug Store outlets in the current fiscal 2006 year and is looking to more than triple the number of openings in fiscal 2007. The chain currently operates approximately 470 stores throughout the western U.S. and HI. Known for giving store managers autonomy to select merchandise, its stores add local flavor by carrying specialty items popular in the neighborhoods they serve. Longs Drug’s RxAmerica subsidiary provides pharmacy benefit management services.

 

Sonic Corp. (405-225-5000) is planning to open approximately 200 Sonic Drive-In restaurants in fiscal 2005, including about 170 by franchisees. The largest chain of quick-service drive-ins in the U.S., Sonic operates about 535 restaurants and franchises more than 2,325 locations throughout 30 states, primarily in the South. The eateries offer such items as hamburgers, extra-long cheese coney dogs, tater tots and cherry limeades. Customers order via intercom from a menu board located in each parking space and carhops deliver the food in an average of four minutes. Some locations, about 125, also offer dine-in seating and drive-thru service. Sonic also has locations in Mexico.

 

Brookstone, Inc. (603-880-9500) is planning to open approximately 20 Brookstone stores this year. The retailer sells gifts, gadgets and other products targeted primarily toward men through over 288 stores in 39 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. The company’s product categories include health and fitness; home and office; outdoor living; and travel and auto. Brookstone also sells its items online and through three catalogs. Because most of Brookstone’s sales are gifts, it operates about 70 temporary kiosks during the Father’s Day week and December holiday selling seasons.

 

Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is planning to open a 28,000 sq.ft. Publix supermarket at the intersection of State Road A1A and 16th Road in Flagler, FL. The company currently operates 849 stores, including 626 throughout FL. The company also operates locations throughout AL, GA, SC and TN. Publix makes some of its own bakery, deli, and dairy goods and many stores offer flowers, housewares, pharmacies and banks. The company also operates four Pix convenience stores throughout FL. 

 

Raymour & Flanigan (315-453-2590) is planning to open furniture stores throughout the New York, NY area. Included in the expansion are showrooms in Middletown and Carle Place, NY and Ocean Township and Iselin, NJ. These openings are slated for later this year. During the coming three to five years, the company plans on opening an additional 20 to 25 showrooms. Typical stores average between 35,000 sq.ft. and 70,000 sq.ft.

 

Forever 21, Inc. (213-741-5100) is planning to open approximately 150 Forever 21 stores after acquiring bankrupt retailer Gadzooks. The retailer has been expanding at a rate of 35 stores annually for the past five years and currently operates more than 200 mainly mall-based U.S. stores, plus one in Canada. The stores offer cheap and chic fashions for women and junior girls. Its trendy clothes are priced lower than its competitors. Most of the retailer’s apparel is private label and made in southern CA. Forever 21 has also opened nine new concept stores called Fashion XXI that offers men’s and women’s fashions, as well as lingerie, footwear, cosmetic items and other accessories.

 

Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to open approximately 75 stores during fiscal 2006. Best Buy sells consumer electronics, home office products, entertainment software and appliances. The company currently operates over 780 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company operates its stores under the retail banners Best Buy, Future Shop, in Canada, and Magnolia Audio Video in western U.S.

 

TelePlus Enterprises, Inc. (866-699-3388) is planning to open three TelePlus stores in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The stores will be located at Galerie de la Capital, Fleur de Lys and Place Laurier. Also, the company secured a location in the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta. The company is actively seeking additional locations in Alberta.

 

Black Bear Diner (530-926-4669) is planning to open between six and eight restaurants this year throughout AZ, CA, NV and OR, as well as in SC and WA. While the company usually selects sites in rural towns, it has opened units in Las Vegas and Reno, NV during the past four years. For 2006 and beyond, Black Bear Diner will open no more than 12 units a year.

 

Charming Shoppes, Inc. (215-245-9100) is planning to open approximately 81 stores nationwide during fiscal 2006. The majority of store openings will be in the strip center format. By brand, the company is looking to open 60 Lane Bryant stores, six Catherines Plus Sizes stores and 15 Fashion Bug stores. The company currently operates approximately 1,050 Fashion Bug stores selling moderately priced apparel and accessories in girls, juniors, misses and plus sizes. It also owns more than 465 Catherine’s Plus Size stores. Across the U.S., Charming Shoppes serves low- to middle-income women and teens.

 

Circuit City Stores, Inc. (804-527-4000) is planning to open a Circuit City store on Santa Rosa Avenue in Santa Rosa, CA. Circuit City currently operates approximately 600 stores throughout the U.S., selling consumer electronics, computers and entertainment software. In addition to superstores, the company also sells its products through mall-based Express Circuit City stores and online. The company is revamping its superstores and no longer sells appliances, favoring more profitable items such as home office products.

  

Hartig Drug Co., Inc. (563-588-8700) is planning to open a Hartig Drug store on a land area of five acres at the intersection of Highway 20 and Wacker Drive in Dubuque, IA. Opening is slated for the fall. Area demographics include a population of 140,000 within 10 miles earning $56,250 as the average household income. The store will be located on a property with a 150-room hotel. The company also is planning to open a store at Harbor View, a 230,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Highway 61 and 151 in Dubuque, IA. The company currently operates a chain of about a dozen pharmacies throughout IA, IL and WI.

 

The Quiznos Master, LLC (720-359-3300) has partnered with Life Cycle exercise bike to create a neighborhood fitness chain called 123 Fit. The 123 Fit program is based on a 30-minute exercise routine. The first club is scheduled to open this month. Quiznos operates approximately 3,500 quick-service Quiznos Sub restaurants that are popular for their made-to-order, oven-toasted subs. The company operates in more than 20 countries, and nearly all of the company’s restaurants are owned by franchisees.

 

Worldwide Restaurant Concepts, Inc. (818-662-9800) is planning to open two Pat & Oscar’s restaurants by the summer and another three to five locations by the end of fiscal 2006. All locations will be in southern CA. Worldwide Restaurant Concepts operates the Sizzler chain of family-style steak houses, with about 310 owned and franchised locations in the U.S., primarily in CA and about 10 other countries. The restaurants offer a variety of beef, chicken, and seafood dishes. The company also operates more than 110 KFC fast-food restaurants franchised from YUM! Brands in the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. In addition, Worldwide Restaurant Concepts owns 82% of Pat & Oscar’s, a chain of about 25 quick-casual  eateries.

 

Sony Electronics, Inc. (858-942-2400) recently opened three Sony Style stores for a total of 15 nationwide so far this year. The stores opened at Westfield Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, CA; Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, CA and Woodfield Mall in Schaumberg, IL. Each store is about 6,000 sq.ft. and will encourage consumers to test-drive a variety of Sony devices and experience firsthand interaction with digital entertainment content.

 

Max & Erma’s Restaurants, Inc. (614-431-5800) is planning to open three Max & Erma’s Restaurants this year, beginning later this month. The company also is currently developing restaurants in suburban Cincinnati, OH and Detroit, MI. Franchised restaurants are opening in Richmond, VA and South Bend, IN. The company currently owns and operates 78 casual dining, full-service restaurants in Akron, Canton, Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton, Niles and Toledo, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing, MI; Pittsburgh and Erie, PA; Lexington and Louisville, KY; Chicago, IL; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA. The company also currently franchises 18 restaurants in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Wilmington, Sandusky and Dayton, OH, the Ohio Turnpike, St. Louis, MO; Green Bay, WI; Philadelphia, PA and Edinburgh and Evansville, IN.
