Who's Opening & Where Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a 125,000 sq.ft. Cabela’s Superstore is La Vista, NE. Opening is slated for Fall 2006. The La Vista store would be the company’s third location in NE, its home state. The store would be located on a portion of Southport West, a 137-acre mixed-use development located along Interstate 80 at the Harrison Street interchange. Cabela’s currently operates 13 locations nationwide. The company also is looking to open the following stores: a 185,000 sq.ft. location in Rogers, MN, as well as locations in Gonzales, LA; Glendale, AZ; Richfield, WI; Reno, NV; Wheat Ridge, CO; East Rutherford, NJ and East Hartford, CT. The stores include such features as waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums, and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities. The company also sells merchandise online and has an outdoors show on ESPN2.
Wireless Toys (248-426-8200) is planning to open locations nationwide this year. The stores occupy spaces of 1,400 sq.ft. to 3,000 sq.ft. in endcaps, freestanding locations and outparcels. Preferred demographics include a population of 110,000 within three miles earning $45,000 as the median household income.
Family Dollar Stores, Inc. (704-847-6961) is planning to open as many as 400 Family Dollar stores during fiscal 2006. The company currently operates approximately 5,900 stores throughout 44 states and Washington, DC. The stores sell food, health and beauty aids, housewares, and toys, as well as apparel, shoes and linens.
Yoshinoya West, Inc. (310-217-2169) is planning to open locations throughout Los Angeles County, CA and southern CA this year. The restaurants occupy spaces of 1,800 sq.ft. to 2,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations and endcaps. The company prefers to open locations near hospitals, colleges, industrial areas and business parks. Preferred demographics include a population of 25,000 within one mile earning up to $60,000 as the median household income.
Guess?, Inc. (213-765-3100) is planning to open a 4,900 sq.ft. Guess? Outlet store at Woodburn Company Stores, a center located off Interstate 5 at Woodburn exit 271 in Woodburn, OR. Opening is slated for later this month in the center’s 24,000 sq.ft. expansion. Guess? sells its lines through approximately 290 retail and outlet stores, to department stores, through more than 240 licensee stores in about 40 countries, and on its Web site.
Worldwide Restaurant Concepts, Inc. (818-662-9800) is planning to open 25 restaurants worldwide. BMW Management, Inc., Sizzler’s largest franchisee, recently signed a development agreement for four restaurants in northern and southern CA. In Las Vegas, Witman’s Foods, LLC has one restaurant under construction and has a commitment for three more, in addition to the two it already operates in greater Las Vegas, NV. Sizzler’s Puerto Rico franchisee, Multi Systems, Inc., recently broke ground on its 12th restaurant and has a commitment to open at least one more location. Sizzler’s international joint venture is currently developing its fourth location in the Beijing, China area, part of a 10-restaurant agreement. Worldwide Restaurant Concepts operates the Sizzler chain of family-style steak houses, with more than 320 owned and franchised locations in the U.S. and about 10 other countries. The restaurants offer a variety of beef, chicken, and seafood dishes and feature a buffet-style salad bar. The company also operates more than 110 KFC fast-food joints, franchised from YUM! Brands, in the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. In addition, Worldwide Restaurant Concepts owns 82% of Pat & Oscar’s, a chain of about 20 quick-casual pasta and pizza eateries.
Jack in the Box, Inc. (858-571-2121) is planning to open 45 to 55 company and franchised Jack In The Box restaurants, including 13 to 15 Quick Stuff convenience stores next year. The company currently operates and franchises more than 2,030 of its flagship hamburger outlets throughout 17 states, primarily in the West and Southwest. The chain offers standard fast-food fare like burgers, fries, and soft drinks along with salads, tacos, and breakfast items. More than 1,550 locations are company-owned while the rest are franchised. In addition to its mainstay burger business, Jack in the Box runs a chain of nearly 220 Qdoba Mexican Grill fast-casual eateries through its Qdoba Restaurants unit.
99 Cents Only Stores (323-881-9936) is planning to open stores throughout AZ, CA, NV and TX. The stores occupy spaces of 15,000 sq.ft. to 20,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations, neighborhood and power centers and downtown locations.
Subway Real Estate Corp. (203-878-2791) is looking to open locations nationwide. The sub shops occupy spaces of 1,200 sq.ft. in traditional sites, but can range from as small as 300 sq.ft. in excess of 2,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates more than 23,000 locations worldwide.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter and Sam’s Club at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix, AZ. The stores will comprise approximately 420,000 sq.ft. of retail space. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.
Sport Clips, Inc. (972-821-9883) is planning to open as many as 200 Sport Clips stores nationwide during the coming 18 months. The hair salons occupy spaces of 1,000 sq.ft. to 1,400 sq.ft. The company currently operates 270 locations nationwide.
Famous Sam’s, Inc. (480-756-9800) sold its chain of 29 AZ restaurants and sports bars that originated in Tucson. TWA Restaurant Group intends to expand Famous Sam’s into the Kansas City, MO market. Famous Sam’s operates stores throughout AZ, including in Tucson, Marana, Mesa, Gilbert, Sierra Vista, Casa Grande, Yuma and Payson.
Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (415-421-7900) is planning to open West Elm furniture stores. The stores offer modular seating, geometric bookcases and low platform beds. The company opened five West Elm stores this year, and is looking to accelerate its number of store openings in 2006. Currently, the company is looking to open locations on 4th Street in Santa Monica, CA, the third store in the state, as well as in Houston, TX; Atlanta, GA and Washington and Princeton, NJ. The company’s retail chains, Williams-Sonoma and larger Grande Cuisine, which offers upscale cookware; Pottery Barn and larger Design Studio, which offers housewares and furniture; and Hold Everything, which offers storage items, sell wares through more than 550 stores throughout 43 states, Washington, DC, and Canada. The company also operates approximately 15 Williams-Sonoma outlet stores and five e-commerce Web sites, and runs an online bridal registry.
Cosi, Inc. (847-597-8800) is planning to open 90 company-owned restaurants and 374 franchised restaurants from 2006 through 2009. The company owns and operates more than 90 eclectic Cosí cafés throughout nearly 20 states offering premium and specialty coffees and made-to-order sandwiches. Its menu also features breakfast items, including its bagel-inspired Squagels, salads, soups, and desserts. Most of its restaurants also offer dinner and drinks after 5 p.m., while its Cosí Downtown units, about a quarter of its cafés which are primarily located in non-residential business districts, close in the evening. Cosi also offers delivery and catering services and operates a handful of coffee kiosks in Macy’s department stores.
Golf Galaxy, Inc. (952-941-8848) is planning to open Golf Galaxy locations in Denver, CO; Christiana, DE; NE and Tulsa, OK. The company currently operates approximately 45 golf superstores throughout 19 states. Its stores, which average approximately 17,000 sq.ft., offer equipment, apparel and shoes, gifts, accessories, and books and videos. Golf Galaxy also sells pre-owned clubs and has a trade-in program. In-store amenities include computer video swing analysis, on-site certified club technicians, indoor driving bays, full-sized putting greens, and advice on equipment from a staff made up of PGA and LPGA professionals.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Inc. (407-236-0556) is planning to open steakhouse locations in Sacramento, CA and Boston, MA, as well as a franchise-owned restaurant in Charlotte, NC, by the end of the year. The restaurant in Sacramento will be located at the Pavilion, a center located on Fair Oaks Boulevard, and is slated to open this month. The company currently operates 88 company-owned and franchised restaurants throughout approximately 30 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico and Taiwan. The menu features steak dinners, fresh seafood, and an extensive wine list.
Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to open a Best Buy store on Milestrip Road in Hamburg, NY. The store would be located across from the thruway entrance. The company currently operates a chain of more than 740 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada offering a wide variety of electronic gadgets, movies, music, computers and appliances. In addition to selling products, the stores offer installation and maintenance services, technical support, and subscriptions for cellphone and Internet services. Covering an average of more than 42,000 sq. ft., the big box stores are located throughout 48 states and five provinces. Best Buy also operates 20 Magnolia Audio Video stores in the U.S. and more than 100 Future Shop locations in Canada.
Cheeburger Cheeburger Restaurants, Inc. (239-437-1611) is planning to open as many as 28 restaurants by the end of this year, and more than that in 2006. Cheeburger Cheeburger Restaurants is the franchisor of a chain of family-style Cheeburger Cheeburger restaurants known for their “create-your-own” burger menu. Each restaurant features a 1950s-style interior, music and a burger bar with more than 22 toppings. Most restaurants are in or near strip centers. The company currently operates more than 52 locations throughout more than a dozen U.S. states.
Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to open 475 stores during fiscal 2006. The company currently operates more than 4,953 drugstores throughout 45 states and Puerto Rico, and has three mail order facilities. Prescription drugs account for more than 60% of sales; the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics, and groceries. Walgreen builds rather than buys stores, so it can pick its locations. Also, more than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.
Fresh City (781-453-0200) signed franchise expansion deals with Fresh Start Enterprises in Chicago, IL and with Garden State Fresh, LLC in NJ. The agreement in Chicago calls for the opening of up to 22 locations throughout IL and WI, while the agreement in NJ calls for the opening of 20 locations, with the first restaurant slated to open early next year at the Livingston Town Center in Livingston, NJ. The company currently operates 14 locations throughout CT, MA, NH and RI. Fresh City serves made-to-order menu items, including salads, wraps, Asian noodle and stir-fry dishes and smoothies. The company also is looking to open locations in North Andover, MA and in Natick, MA early next year.
Claire’s Stores, Inc. (954-433-3900) is planning to open more locations throughout Spain during the latter half of this fiscal year or during Fiscal 2007. Three leases have also been signed for stores in Holland, with opening dates planned for later this year. The stores will be located in the cities of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen. Claire’s Stores offers such items as costume jewelry, handbags, and hair bows typically priced from $2 to $20. Claire’s operates about 3,000 boutiques, primarily in malls, that include Claire’s, The Icing, Bijoux One and Cleopatre. The chain operates in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and the Virgin Islands.
Unisa (305-591-9397) is planning to open a 1,100 sq.ft. store in Greenwich, CT. Unisa, which sells women’s shoes and handbags, operates eight stores throughout upscale areas of FL and a boutique on Madison Avenue in New York, NY. Unisa Europe, based in Spain, designs and distributes products throughout Europe. The Greenwich store will be a Unisa Resort Boutique, the chain’s exclusive line of high-end shoes, which are handcrafted in Spain. Area retail will include Sephora, a popular cosmetics chain which is slated to open this month.
Old Navy, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to open an Old Navy store at Atlantic Station, a 138-acre mixed-use community in midtown Atlanta, GA. Old Navy operates a chain of approximately 900 family clothing stores throughout North America, offering items under its own brand name at discounted prices. The apparel retailer also operates a Web-based store at oldnavy.com. Products include men’s, women’s, and children’s and even dogs’ apparel and accessories. Founded in 1994, Old Navy is a division of the casual apparel Gap. Inc. The chain plans to add about 200 new stores by 2007 and has extended its brand to include maternity and women’s plus-size apparel, as well as accessories and personal care products.
AutoZone, Inc. (901-495-6500) is planning to open an AutoZone store along State Highway 138, State Highway 20 and Miller’s Chapel Road in Conyers, GA. The company currently operates approximately 3,500 stores throughout the U.S., as well as more than 60 stores throughout Mexico and is expanding into Puerto Rico. AutoZone stores sell hard parts such as alternators, engines, batteries, maintenance items like oil and antifreeze, accessories like car stereos and floor mats, and other merchandise under brand names as well as under private labels, including Duralast and Valucraft.
Joey’s Seafood & Grill (866-304-5888) is planning to open a restaurant during mid-December at the Loop 281-Judson Road site, formerly occupied by Whataburger, in Longview, TX. The Longview restaurant is among 10 the company expects to open during the coming eight years. Other locations include two in Tyler, TX and three in Shreveport, LA. The restaurants specialize in fish and chips, as well as calamari, appetizers and key lime pie. The menu also offers crab cakes, gumbo, coconut chicken and fish, halibut, steak, grilled chicken and burgers.
PJ’s Coffee and Wine Bar (678-999-0513) is planning to open 15 to 20 locations this year. The company currently operates six stores.

The company currently operates approximately 90 coffee shops throughout seven states and offers more than 30 types of coffee, including more than 20 blends. Its teas run the spectrum from India black to herbal blends. The stores also offer items such as biscotti, mugs and brewing equipment. Most of the company’s outlets are located throughout CA, while others can be found in CO, IL, MA, OR, TX and WA. The company also sells its coffee wares through retail grocery stores, including Safeway and Whole Foods.

The stores stock brand-name and private-label goods in two main categories: domestics like bed linens, bathroom and kitchen items and home furnishings like cookware and cutlery, small household appliances, picture frames and more. The company looks to open 70 or more superstores per year.
Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. (212-318-7000) is planning to open 20 stores nationwide and internationally during the fiscal year. The company also continues to roll out its “Rugby” store, a new concept store with a full lifestyle collection targeting 18 to 25-year-old men and women, by opening stores in Chapel Hill, NC and Charlottesville, VA. The company currently operates approximately 275 retail and outlet stores throughout the U.S. and licenses more than 100 others worldwide.
Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is planning to open an 80,000 sq.ft. Nordstrom store at Waterside Shops at Pelican Bay in Naples, FL. The store will encompass two levels and is slated to open during Fall 2007 or Spring 2008. The company also is planning to open a store at the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens, FL during March 2006, and at Aventura Mall in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale, FL area in the fall 2007. Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes, and accessories through approximately 95 Nordstrom stores and about 50 Nordstrom Rack outlet stores in about 25 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and about 35 Façonnable boutiques, which are located primarily in Europe.
Commerce Bancorp, Inc. (856-751-9000) is planning to open 50 to 55 locations throughout New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA and metro Washington, DC by the end of the year. During 2006, the company is looking to open 65 locations across its network that will span from Washington, DC, FL and seven other states, including CT, DE, MD, NJ, NY, PA and VA. The company is the parent of Commerce Bank, which operates more than 320 branches throughout DE, NJ, NY and PA. It is growing through vigorous branch construction in prime retail sites and is opening offices throughout the New York City and Washington, DC areas.
La-Z-Boy, Inc. (734-242-1444) is planning to open 17 stores, as well as converting 24 existing stores to the “New Generation” format. During 2006, the company is looking to open 45 to 50 New Generation stores. Eddie Bauer, Inc. (425-755-6100) is planning to open a 4,900 sq.ft. Eddie Bauer store at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie, a center located at the intersection of Illinois Route 6 and U.S. Route 150 in Peoria, IL. The center is currently anchored by Bergner’s, Linens ‘N Things, Border’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Old Navy. The stores sell sportswear, outerwear, and footwear for men, women, and children through more than 400 retail and outlet stores in Canada, Germany, Japan, and the U.S.
The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) is planning to open more locations this year. The company currently operates more than 3,750 stores nationwide under more than two dozen banners, including approximately 2,530 supermarkets and multi-department stores. It also runs nearly 800 convenience stores under names such as Quik Stop and Kwik Shop. Kroger’s Fred Meyer Stores subsidiary operates more than 125 supercenters, which offer groceries, general merchandise, and jewelry in the western US.
Qdoba Restaurant Corp. (303-629-5000) is planning to expand its restaurants throughout IA. The company is opening a Qdoba Mexican Grill in Dubuque, Des Moines and other areas throughout the state. Qdoba operates and franchises more than 220 eateries throughout more than 25 states, offering its signature burritos along with nachos, salads and tacos. Patrons can also choose from nearly a dozen fresh salsas and sauces to compliment their entrees.
Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open approximately 90 Petco stores and remodel 50 locations this year. The company currently operates about 655 stores throughout more than 40 states and Washington, D.C. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry some 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars, leashes, grooming products, toys, and animal habitats; the stores also offer grooming, obedience training, vet services, and sponsors pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations. |
