Who's Opening & Where Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to open Borders Books & Music stores throughout VA at the following locations: a 21,017 sq.ft. store located at the Patrick Henry Mall at the intersection of Interstate 64 and Jefferson Boulevard in Newport News; a 19,750 sq.ft. store at Warrenton Center Shopping Plaza located at the intersection of West Lee Highway and Winchester Station in Warrenton and a 20,000 sq.ft. store located at Winchester Station Shopping Center at the intersection of Pleasant Valley and East Tevis Roads in Winchester. Upon the opening of these stores, Borders will operate 15 stores throughout VA. The company currently operates stores throughout 50 states and in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Singapore. Its approximately 1,250 retail stores include more than 500 Borders superstores, about 700 mall-based Waldenbooks stores, and more than 35 UK-based Books etc. shops. The stores also sell music, videos and DVDs.
The Vitamin Shoppe (201-868-5959) opened a 3,700 sq.ft. The Vitamin Shoppe location at Lord Salisbury Center on U.S. 13 in Salisbury, MD. Expansion will continue nationwide. The company sells vitamins, supplements, and minerals through more than 250 The Vitamin Shoppe stores throughout two dozen U.S. states.
Von Maur, Inc. (563-388-2200) is planning to open a Von Maur store at the Polaris Fashion Place, a center located in Columbus, OH. The 140,000 sq.ft. space was formerly occupied by Lord & Taylor. Opening is slated for the fall. Von Maur currently operates more than 20 upscale department stores throughout eight U.S. states, including IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN and NE.
Eddie Bauer, Inc. (425-755-6100) is planning to open a 4,900 sq.ft. Eddie Bauer store at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie, a center located at the intersection of Illinois Route 6 and U.S. Route 150 in Peoria, IL. The center is currently anchored by Bergner’s, Linens ‘N Things, Border’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Old Navy. The stores sell sportswear, outerwear, and footwear for men, women, and children through more than 400 retail and outlet stores in Canada, Germany, Japan, and the U.S.
Qdoba Restaurant Corp. (303-629-5000) is planning to expand its restaurants throughout IA. The company is opening Qdoba Mexican Grill in Dubuque, Des Moines and other areas throughout the state. Qdoba operates and franchises more than 220 eateries throughout more than 25 states, offering its signature burritos along with nachos, salads and tacos.
Spartan Stores, Inc. (616-878-2000) is looking to expand one store, complete store remodels and/or merchandise resets at 10 to 13 additional locations and begin construction on one or two stores during fiscal 2006. The supermarket chain currently operates approximately 54 locations throughout MI under the Family Fare Supermarkets and Glen’s Markets banners. Spartan also operates about 19 deep-discount drug stores called The Pharm throughout MI and OH The company is also a grocery wholesaler, distributing more than 40,000 food and general merchandise items to more than 300 independent grocery stores.
Bakers Footwear Group, Inc. (314-621-0699) is planning to open approximately 30 to 32 Bakers Footwear stores this year and is also on schedule to remodel approximately 25 locations to a new format. The mall-based vendor of women’s shoes and accessories operates approximately 220 stores throughout 36 states, with nearly 30 stores doing business under the Wild Pair banner. Bakers Footwear sells dress, casual, and sport shoes, as well as boots, sandals, and accessories, targeting women ages 12 to 29. Private labels account for the majority of company sales.
Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open approximately 90 Petco stores and remodel 50 locations this year. The company currently operates about 655 stores throughout more than 40 states and Washington, D.C. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry some 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars, leashes, grooming products, toys, and animal habitats; the stores also offer grooming, obedience training, vet services, and sponsors pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations.
Carlson Cos., Inc. (763-212-1000) is planning to open a T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant at CenterPlace in Greeley, CO. Opening is slated for late spring 2006. The 5,100 sq.ft. restaurant will be located between the Outback Steak House and Red Robin along the U.S. 34 Bypass, east of 47th Avenue. Overall, the company is planning to open 50 T.G.I. Friday’s locations this year and 100 during the coming two years. Carlson’s restaurant empire includes the 750-unit T.G.I. Friday’s chain. The restaurants operates locations worldwide, including 40 outlets throughout the United Kingdom and 60 countries.
Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear (516-829-4730) is planning to open as many as 40 stores by the end of the year. The stores offer collegiate sportswear, jeans, khakis, sweaters, jackets, pajamas, footwear, accessories, hats and T-shirts at low prices. The company is continuing its national expansion and growth opportunities in enclosed malls, lifestyle centers, power centers and outlets. The company currently operates 80 stores throughout 20 states and occupies spaces of 25,000 sq.ft. to 150,000 sq.ft.
Jack in the Box Inc. (858-571-2121) is planning to open 45 to 55 company and franchised Jack In The Box restaurants, including 13 to 15 Quick Stuff convenience stores this year. The company currently operates and franchises more than 2,000 hamburger outlets throughout 17 states. More than 1,550 locations are company-owned, while the rest are franchised. In addition to its mainstay burger business, Jack in the Box runs a chain of nearly 180 Qdoba Mexican Grill fast-casual eateries through its Qdoba Restaurants unit.
Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. (757-321-5000) is planning to open an 8,000 sq.ft. Dollar Tree store at a 24,000 sq.ft. center on Interstate Drive in Bloomington, IL. Area retail includes Wal*Mart. Dollar Tree currently operates more than 2,800 discount stores throughout 48 states, selling a changing mix of housewares, toys, seasonal items, food, health and beauty aids, gifts, and books all priced at $1. Dollar Tree Stores are located in high-traffic strip centers anchored by mass merchandisers and supermarkets, as well as in small towns. In recent years, Dollar Tree has begun opening larger stores from 10,000 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft.
La-Z-Boy, Inc. (734-242-1444) is planning to open 17 stores, as well as converting 24 existing stores to the “New Generation” format. During 2006, the company is looking to open 45 to 50 New Generation stores. La-Z-Boy sells its recliners, chairs, sofas, tables and modular seating units through more than 60 company-owned stores, almost 335 La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, and nearly 370 in-store galleries at furniture dealers, department stores, and other outlets. La-Z-Boy also makes office and wood furniture and supplies furniture for the hospitality and health care industries. Its brands include La-Z-Boy, Bauhaus USA, Hammary, Lea, and Kincaid.
Rent-A-Center, Inc. (972-801-1100) is planning to open a total of 60 to 70 locations this year. The company owns and operates approximately 2,870 stores throughout North America and Puerto Rico under the Rent-A-Center, Rent Rite, Rainbow Rentals and Get It Now tradenames, and franchises more than 310 through subsidiary ColorTyme. The stores rent name-brand home electronics, furniture, accessories, appliances and computers. Customers can own the products after a specified number of payments. In 2004 the company entered the Canadian market via the acquisition of five rent-to-own stores in Calgary and Edmonton. |
